Water Management

Establishing a Water Resource Management Policy

Sustainable water supply and water source preservation has become an important priority among all electronics companies including Samsung Electronics. Responding growing industry needs, EICC and WBCSD which is international business organizations for CSR have created corporate water resource management guidelines. Recognizing the growing importance of global water resource management, we have established water policies with a focus on enhanced stakeholder communication and minimization of management risk.

Samsung Electronics Water Resource Management Policy

Minimizing Water Management Risk

Samsung Electronics has a target to reduce 3% of the water use per production unit by 2015 compared to 2011. Then, we collected water use data to identify plants with highest water use, established a monitoring structure, identified reduction measures, and implemented the most cost effective measures to minimize business risks associated with water use and associated environmental impact. Following is our activities to reduce risks associated with water management.

1. Semiconductor Production
Semiconductor production is our core business, which is exposed to significant business risks associated with water shortages. Recognizing its risk, we have made water management system for semiconductor production. So, we carefully analyzed the water resource risk and developed alternative water supplies in case of water shortages. Also, we made an emergency response system to avoid any negative impact upon business.

2. Water Management System

We establish a comprehensive water management system which reduces the cost and pressure on water resources by promoting effective use of water resources. The amount of water used in Korea increased in 2011 due to facility

expansion and water use per unit production has also increased in overseas operation sites as 20 plants increased their production capacity and workforce. We plan to implement measures to reduce water use and recycling over time to reduce water use per unit production. The volume of waste water increased by 14% in 2011 compared to 2010. We plan to achieve a 2% reduction in water use per year starting in 2012.

3. The ultra pure water recycling

We use a large amount of ultra pure water for LCD and semiconductor manufacturing process. In 2011, recycling rate of the ultra pure water at semiconductor and LCD production plants was 51%. The recycling rate decreased compared to 2010 due to the addition of new production lines. But we plan to implement additional facilities to further improve water recycling and the supply system.

4. Non-industrial waste water treatment and recycling

We are operating on-site non-industrial waste water treatment and recycling facilities to reduce water use and sewage discharge. Treated water is used for gardening and fire safety system. For example, in India, we installed a rainwater collection system in plant and use the collected rainwater for gardening and cleaning.

Waste Management
Samsung Electronics is fully committed to minimizing any negative impacts on the communities in which it operates by implementing integrated waste prevention strategies across all our production and service act All of Samsung Electronics business operations in Korea enforce rigorous standards in treatment of waste. We are also committed to minimise the generation of waste materials and recycle resources where possible. We audit waste treatment companies on a regular basis to monitor their activities and encourage our workforce as well as suppliers to recycle. Our goal is to establish a resource recycling system and shape Samsung Electronics into a company with zero emission of waste.

Parts Reuse Center's Delivery System

Samsung Electronics Giheung, Hwaseong Campus Parts Reuse Center dismantles electronic products that are deemed at the end of life by R&D and manufacturing departments. Following this, reusable parts are recovered and stored for reuse. This reduces the need to purchase new parts, thereby improving resource efficiency.

Air and Water Pollution Management

Samsung Electronics is enforcing an internal environmental standard which is stricter than other regulations and compliance. We also set internal management targets to achieve further reduction and are applying most up-to-date environmental technologies in our new plants. We have tele-monitoring systems (TMS) in our production plants for 24hour pollution management, with emergency response systems in place for handling abnormal conditions. We also have an internal analysis lab which supports pollution management throughout production processes from its source to point of releases.
