FROM THE DESK OF FR. DENNIS MILLER

For the past two weeks, Ive been using this column to talk about the nature of clustering. Today, I hope to hit on the real nitty gritty of what it means for parish committees. I believe this is really where the question of why we are clustering is answered. In my upcoming parish presentations, Ill present to you data showing a decline in priests as well as a decline in population in Hancock and Winnebago Counties. So, there are not only fewer priests to staff the parishes, there are fewer people in these counties to attend and participate in them as well. One way to deal with that is by streamlining our parishes so that there are very few committees. One of the main purposes of clustering is to recognize the real deficiency of that attitude. A parish must be more than a group of people who meet for one hour a week to pray and keep their building open. A parish must be a place which carries out the mission of Christ for the salvation of souls. Clustering recognizes that carrying out the mission of Christ demands putting to use many different gifts. The Archdiocese of Dubuque expects that we put our gifts to use in a variety of ways. There are some people who are really good at empowering others to be active in the church. They should be on the stewardship committee. There are some people who feel passionately about serving the poor and oppressed. They should serve on the social justice committee. There are some people who want to have a voice in the larger vision and pastoral needs of our area. They should join the pastoral council. There are some people who are passionate about learning and teaching the faith to others. They should be on the faith formation commission. And there are some people who care deeply about the way we celebrate Mass and the other sacraments. They should be on the liturgy committee. Each of these committees are cluster committees involving one or two members from each parish. There are two committees that each parish will have and maintain. There is the finance council which works on the parish budget and takes care of the parish buildings. And, there is the parish life committee, which cares for the sick and puts on meals at the end of Mass in order to build community. If each parish had to maintain all seven of these committees as individual parish committees, it would mean that it would have between 30-40 people rotating on and off them every few years. Part of the reason for developing a cluster is so that fewer people (15-20 people from each parish) are capable of carrying out a variety of ministries in the area while essential local ministries (finances, hospitality, visits to the sick, etc.) are maintained as well. It recognizes that, even with fewer people and fewer priests, the mission of Christ can be carried out in all its diversity and all its unity.
