Dynamics of the 3-layered ribbed conical shell at squeezing and running to operating mode
Alexey I. Borovkov, Alexander A. Michailov During experiments carried under the pick-up cone several critical frequencies were observed during the speed-up at which oscillations originated. Due to high frequency of the oscillations the nature of them and the value of frequency could not be determined experimentally. Existing approaches to the analytical solution of such dynamical problems can't give direct solution of the problem without many assumptions. Because of that 3D FE model was created to simulate this process in LS-DYNA. The structure considered is a conical 3-layered ribbed shell (see Fig.1). Interior layer with ribs is made of rubber-like material Duotan DU65 (see Fig.2). The middle layer is cord and the outer layer made of Duotan DU90. In the lower part of the cone there is a steel insert that connects the cone with the rotating shaft. Mooney-Rivlin hyper-elastic material model is used to describe Duotan (MAT_MOONEY-RIVLIN_RUBBER [1]). Experimental curves of the stressstrain dependency are shown in the Fig. 3. Middle layer (cord) after direct homogenization procedure [2] is substituted by elastic cylindrically orthotrophic material (MAT_ORTHOTROPIC_ELASTIC). The process of running to the operating model can be divided into three stages: Squeezing of the shell In the initial moment of time the rollers are coming to the cone so that they're touching it along the generatrix. Coefficient of friction between rollers and outer layer of the cone is taken to be constant and equal to 0.2. The squeezing time is chosen such that to avoid dynamical effects. Speed-up After squeezing the shaft starts rotating with increasing angular velocity by the linear law. The rotation of the cone is caused by rotation of the steel insert. At this every roller can perform free rotation around local axis of symmetry (BOUNDARY_SPC_NODE with using a key CID). All other motions of the rollers are constrained. By this the flexibility of rollers supports is not taken into consideration. Operating mode The speed-up is performed during 0.06 s, and then the rotation is done with constant angular velocity.

Fig. 3. Stress-strain diagram of the DU90 and DU65 During the speed-up of the cone the torsional vibrations can be observed. They are caused by the lag between upper part of the cone relative to the lower. One of the reasons for this is the friction between rollers and cone. The analysis performed has shown that in case of zero friction these vibrations don't appear. Of the most interest are the torsional oscillations of the cone. Consider the dependency of these oscillations amplitude on time. We choose two points at the upper part of the cone and at the steel insert (points 1 and 2), so that their axial coordinates u in the initial moment of time are equal (Fig. 4).

In Fig. 4 the dependency of the difference between rotation angles of points 1 and 2 on time is presented. It is seen that during speed-up the difference between angles of rotation is oscillating near the value of 1 degree. This fact is confirmed experimentally. At the presented AVI files one can also see vertical oscillations of the ribs that represent superposition of high-frequency oscillations of the cone. Amplitude of these oscillations is low and doesnt exceed half-thickness of the rib. 1. Hallquist, J.O. LS-DYNA theoretical manual, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, CA, May 1998. 2.
