USER MANUAL
NOTES AND SAFETY WARNINGS
1 - PMM 8010 Signal Analyzer and its related Artificial Network (USN) have been
designed and manufactured in Italy according to the national standards and
regulations for industrial electronic products, paying particular attention to all safety
recommendations.
2 - PMM 8010 and USNs are instruments for testing high-voltage equipment.
Improper usage and lack of caution may endanger the operator's life.
3 - PMM 8010 and related USN have internal parts working at high voltage. We
recommend to avoid any usage of the equipment or even to switch-on the
equipment when the external case has been removed.
4 - If evident damages have been caused to the external case, or if you even
suspected that internal damages have occured to the equipment due to improper
storage, transportation or utilization, we recommend to avoid any further usage and
to contact your National Assistance Centre or your National Distributor.
S - The cover of PMM 8010 and USN's should never be removed or unscrewed. Any
inspection, internal check or repair shall be conducted exclusively by trained and
authorized personnel at the Manufacturer's Service Centre or at your National
Authorized Assistance Centre.
S - Our stabilized networks (USN) are protected against misuse and excess of current
drawing by the device under test Anyhow, we recommend you to make sure to use
the correct kirid of USN before starting measurements :
o L2 - 25 and L2 - 10 for single phase devices-under-test up to 10 Amps;
o L3 - 25 for tri-phase devices-under-test up to 25 Amps;
o L 1 -150 for measurement on a single phase up to 150 Amps.
7 - Before switching-on .the USN, make sure that the mains distribution system does
not utilize differential safety breakers. The internal structure of any USN (according to
CISPR) enables the existance of leakage currents to ground, which will make the
differential breakers blowout. To avoid any problem, we suggest to use an insulating
tranformer to provide the mains supply to the USN.
- I -
8 - We suggest to connect receiver and USN through front RF-cable only AFTER:
o switching on both receiver and USN;
o supplying the devices-under-test through the USN, in order to avoid any
stress on the input stage of the receiver, due to the switch-on transients.
9 - In case of electric shock, urgently refer to the "FIRST AIO" table in the following
page of this manual.
- II -

1. GENERAL
1.1 FOREWORDS
The objective of EMI Conducted tests is to define the amplitude of current Ie and
voltage Ve emission from the Oevice Under Test (OUT) onto the power mains or to
define the immunity of the OUT to the conducted interferences.
The mains lines themselves do not allow for reliable EMI measurements since their
impedance is subject to marked variations that generates different test results at
different test sites.
PMM's Artificial Mains Network L2-10 is a LlSN used for RFI measurements on AC
single-phase, power supplied electric and electronic equipment drawing up to 10
Amps, that is in the most frequently-encountered applications.
L2-10 is a two-line V-network with an equivalent circuit of 500hm / / (50hm + 50uH),
fully compliant with CISPR pub!, 16, VOE 0876 and FCC part 15 regulation.
The mainfunctions performed by the Artificial mains Network are:
o terminate the OUT with a standardized impedance against reference
ground;
o supply power to the OUT;
o insulate the test circuits against external interference coming, for
example, from AC-voltage network;
o route the EMI of the OUT to the receiver, in case of conducted emission
measurement, and the EMI from the signal generator to the OUT, in
case of susceptibility test.
Ferrite-core coils are used in the low-pass filter. Saturation effects have been avoided
designig a ferrite-core that is able to withstand a 50% increase of the Imax value
without any saturation.
- 2 -
Standard L2-10 is provided with standar SCHUKO power soket 10/16 Amps. to
connect test item, but other connector types are available on request.
L2-10 has obviously been designed and built up to work toghether with PMM 8010
Signal Analyzer, but it may be normally used in conjunction with other Manufacturer's
RF Receivers or Spectrum Analyzer.
1.2 L2-10 FOR "CURRENT INJECTION" TESTS.
As described above, a LlSN is primarily a probe to take-out RF signals. Some
particular EMC recommendations might require that Oevices-Under-Test shall be
proven to conducted EMC-immunity in range 10kHz - 30MHz, by injecting on the
supply-lines certain RF interferences and checking the OUT's response.
L2-10 may be used also to this purposes by injecting a RF signal in to the RF output
on the front panel of L2-10.
Injected signal shall be lower than 127dBuV to avoid damages to PMM 8010 Signal
Analyzer and, generally to all EMI receivers.
1.3 TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
In the following figure it is represented the L2-10 LlSN equivalent circuit, designed

2. OPERATING PMM L.2-10
WARNING: before providing power supply to the OUT, we suggest to
disconnect the RF cable between USN and Signal Anallyzer.
NOTE: before putting L2-10 into operation, connect the Artificial Mains
Network to earth in order to avoid dangerous voltages on the case.
2.1 MAINS SUPPLY INPUT.
Mains supply input connector is placed on the rear plate of the USN (8).
2.2 CONNECTING TEST RECEIVER.
The interference-measuring test receiver, PMM 8010 Signal Analyzer or other RF
receivers, is connected to BNC socket, on the front panel, through a connectorized
coaxial cable (6).
An additional earth line for the test receiver can be fitted to the extra ground
connecting pOint (2).
2.3 CONNECTING TEST ITEM.
The test item (OUT) must be connected to the SCHUKO 10 Amps plug on the front of
the USN (4).
OUT with separate earth terminal can be earthed through the extra ground contact.
2.4 PROTECTIVE EARTH.
According to VOE 0871 regulation, the protective earth lead of the OUT shall be
connected to the reference ground at the LlSN when the RFI voltage is measured.
If the RFI voltage is 5 dB or less under the limit, the measurement has to be repeated
with an inserted protective earth inductor (1.6 mH) between the protective earth lead
of the OUT and the reference ground at the USN.
Protective earth (P.E.) inductor can be inserted by means of the dedicated switch (3)
on the front panel.

2.5 TEST SET-UP.
Measurement repeatibility is the main concern of standards and regulations, that
exactly define the test set-up for interference measurements.
The Artificial Mains Network L2-10 complies with CISPR publ.16 (part 2), VDE 0876
and the American FCC part 15 rules and regulations.
The test SET-UPs required for various standards are largely identical; a detailed
description is given in VDE 0877 part 1. (par. 9.2 "Measurements using LlSNs").
The DUT has to be positioned on a non-metallic or conductive table (height >80cm.),
40 cm. in front of a metallic grounded wall with dimensions of at least 2 m. x 2 m.
The table may also be used inside a screened room.
The distance of the DUT from any metallic part may affect the measured RFI voltage
values; VDE 0877 exactly define the dimensions for the test configurations, by means
of the following drawing:
