Welcome Message from the President

Welcome to Mahasarakham University, I am delighted

that you are considering studying with us at one of Thailands foremost centers of higher education. Over the years I am often, asked, What is special about the education at Mahasarakham University? In response, what I feel draws many students to us, beyond our offering of a world-class education is that we provide a small college experience in a large university setting creating a sense of community among our students through a wide variety of special programs and the work of our most talented professors and dedicated personnel.

Secondly, the university and its staff take pride in challenging young scholars to excel academically, think critically and to live their lives in an ethical manner. The local people of the province of Maha Sarakham are justifiably proud of their University and I hold that legacy in hand with a profound sense of stewardship. While the students and staff endeavor to honor and build upon MSUs proud heritage and local cultural traditions we also strive to move together into a future of endless opportunity for all through the promise of new knowledge and application of new technologies. Mahasarakham Univ

OVERVIEW
History The historical development of Mahasarakham University goes back to 1968 from humble beginnings as a College of Education with the mandate of extending higher education to the nations rural northeastern region. At that time, the college functioned to produce quality teachers to serve schools and educational institutions of all levels. The colleges status was later elevated when it became a regional campus of Srinakharinwirot University in 1974 and eventually gained full independent status as Mahasarakham University, Thailands 22nd government university on December 9, 1994 under the University Act graciously authorized by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej and published in the Royal Gazette. Locality Mahasarakham University is located in the town Mahasarakham (one word)in the province of Maha Sarakham (two words) which literally means city of great education; an apt name since it hosts seven well-known and respected institutions of higher learning which include Mahasarakham University, Rajabhat Mahasarakham University, Sri Mahasarakham Nursing College, Mahasarakham Vocational College and Mahasarakham Technical College. Also regarded as the Takasila of Isan (Takasila referring to a great learning centre of ancient India) Maha Sarakham throughout its history has always acted as a center of Buddhist wisdom and culture in the region. Because Mahasarakham is primarily a university town, the cost of food and housing, etc. is quite low, as a rather substantial portion of the resident population is comprised of students, teachers and staff from many of the schools in the province. As one might expect, the population tends to grow and shrink with the annual academic calendar cycles of semesters and summer breaks as students flow into and out of the town and its environs.

Overview

Campus The new, spacious and modern campus at the main Khamriang location acts as the administrative and academic center of the university offering many first-class facilities; including lecture theatres, seminar rooms and residential facilities for students and staff. There are restaurants, shops, sports facilities, libraries and laboratories all within easy walking distance. A wide range of food and beverage services are available on campus year round and wired/wireless Internet access is also widely available and easily accessible.

Geography and Climate Maha Sarakham is at the center of Isan (the northeast region of Thailand), making it a convenient base from which to explore the entire northeast region and neighboring countries beyond like Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar. Topographically, Maha Sarakham province is a vast rolling plain (comprised mostly of rice fields) with the Chi River flowing through it. The province is warm and tropical, its surroundings lush and fertile with a wide variety of flora and fauna, creating an ideal setting for learning and study. The temperature tends to vary from season to season but in the hot season between the months of March to June, local temperatures can reach as high as 39C. During the cool season from November to February temperatures can drop to as low as 15C at night. The rainy season is from May to October when the south-west monsoon sweeps across the Indian Ocean to drench the entire country, hitting from the south first. Although hot and humid, the climate rarely gets as oppressive as it can in other tropical countries around the world. Transportation Both, the town and province has an extensive and efficient public transportation system with stops at the University providing good connections to all the main parts of town. Public transport is primarily by songthaew, (also known in English as a Baht bus - a modified pick-up or a larger truck used as a share taxi). Other means of transport such as motorcycle taxis and tuk-tuks (auto rickshaw or three-wheel passenger motorcycle) can be utilized. The long-distance bus station in town has connections to all the major cities and towns in the region and also travels directly to and from Bangkok (Thailands capital city). Although Mahasarakham does not have its own airport or train station, air and train travel are easily and conveniently accessible via neighboring Khon Kaen provinces train station and modern airport (located just a little over an hour away by bus).

Cost of Living The cost of living in Thailand is generally inexpensive when compared with many other countries throughout the world. As MSU is located in a small rural province in a university town, the cost of living can be even less expensive when compared to other parts of Thailand especially in or near the major tourist areas. As always, when it comes to accommodation, location and amenities are key cost factors thus prices will vary enormously according to where you wish to live and what things you feel you absolutely need to have such as Cable TV or high-speed unlimited internet access that is above the basic package commonly found in student dormitories. Despite this, rent and other associated costs are generally reasonable yet dependent on lifestyle, habits, individual tastes and preferences.

Average Expenditure Ranges Food Expenses: 6,000 Baht/month Transportation: City public transport costs around 10 Baht/one-way trip Accommodation: 2,000 - 4,000 Baht/month (shared) * to 4,000 - 6,000 Baht/month (living alone)* Medical Insurance: 3,000 - 5,000 Baht/year *Generally, a Security Deposit or Bond of 2,000 to 3,000 Baht (up to an equivalent of a months rent may be required in advance) Note: 1 U.S. dollar = @30 Baht (as of July 2011)

International Relations Office The International Relations Office is located on the third floor of the Borommarachakumaree Building (also known as the Presidents Building). The IR Office provides a wide variety of services to international staff and students offering both advice and support. For example, it coordinates the Welcome Program and Airport Coach Pick-up Service for new international students and a number of Study Abroad Programs and other exchange opportunities. The IR Office also works to keep international students up-to-date with important news, events and activities in and around campus in addition to providing assistance with visa, passport, accommodation, transport or any types of official documentation questions or other administrative or general enquiries. MSU and IR personnel recognize that studying abroad can be a big challenge, especially at the beginning. The various steps that lie between applying and matriculating are often entirely new territory for students. Thus, MSU supports its international students assisting them to get started as well as to find their way around the university when they arrive. Most importantly, the support that begins during the international student application process does not end upon their arrival to campus but rather continues throughout the entirety of their studies with us. The friendly and considerate IR staff are always available to help and assist International students who find themselves in need of advice or help with difficulties adjusting to life and/or study at MSU, etc. The IR Office encourages all students to feel free to call, email or stop by the office (in person) to speak with one of our international relations officers and student advisors.

Barn of wisdom. Sustainable development of society. As a geographical part of Thailand, Isan is the land of plentiful arts and rich culture. The historical and archeological evidences excavated at Ban Chiang, Udon Thani Province have brought Isan to the world attention as being an ancient and civilized land. As a cradle of world civilization, Isan has accumulated beliefs, arts, traditions, and folk knowledge. In 1970 a group of professors, students commenced culture surveys, taking pictures, interviewing people as well as collecting artifacts and fieldwork data for research reports, exhibitions and conservation of the Isan peoples ways of life and their culture. The State University Affairs granted and gazetted the name of the then Center of Northeastern Art and Culture to become the Research Institute of Northeastern Art and Culture (RINAC) in 1986. RINAC has a four storey building displaying an applied Thai architectural design; initially used as an office, art and artifact collection and exhibition area, as well as being utilized for art seminars. Affiliated to the Graduate School, RINAC was able to enroll Masters students in Cultural Science in 2004 and PhD level the following year. RINAC will continue its work in affiliation with the expected creation of the new Faculty of Culture in 2012.

Currently the institute consists of 3 departments with 47 faculty and staff members including 15 PhDs, 4 assistant professors and 1 associate professor. There are 67 PhD students, 46 graduate students, and 257 undergraduate students enrolled in the school.

SCIENCES AND TECHNOLOGIES Natural Medicinal Mushroom Museum Curator: Dr. Khwanruan Papong

Connecting people to nature through educational experiences promotes biodiversity, conservation and a greater understanding of our natural world. The Natural Medicinal Mushroom Museum at Mahasarakham University is a learning and research center dedicated to the expansion and dissemination of the knowledge pertaining to natural medicinal mushrooms and fungi. In northeastern Thailand the local people consume mushrooms in vast quantities each year but also revere these edible fungi for their immense health benefits with many making use of some types of mushrooms as medicine to treat certain ailments and diseases. However, academic studies on mushrooms have rarely been conducted. Being located in the center of a region, rich in many varieties of this valuable resource, Mahasarakham University, inheriting the traditional wisdom in the use of this natural treasure has taken on a leadership role in conserving as well as increasing the body of knowledge about mushrooms. At the museum visitors learn about how mushrooms fit into the ecosystem including learning why mushrooms are more closely related to animals than plants and can discover the invaluable symbiotic relationship between fungi and many members of the plant kingdom. Because of its efforts, the museum has become a leading educational and research facility highlighting Thailands mushroom resources so that people, of all ages and in future generations can understand, value biodiversity and local wisdom and seek to help protect the balance of our natural world through conservation. As Thailand has an excellent record of non-marine Mesozoic environments, ranging in age from the Triassic to the Cretaceous many localities in several parts of the country have yielded abundant fossils, including plants, invertebrates and vertebrates with fossils of Mesozoic vertebrates being most abundant in the northeastern region of the country. Since Mahasarakham University is located right in the center of this region, a Thai-French team decided to establish the centre here in order to carry out various research activities and to provide palaeontological education to the universitys students

Currently the centre consists of 11 faculty and staff members including 11 PhDs and 3 assistant professors. Programs Research Fields Palaeobiology (including Invertebrate Palaeontology ) Palaeobotany Sedimentology Palaeoecology and Evolutionary Biology Primary emphasis is on: Palaeobotanical research Dinosaur research Mesozoic vertebrate research Cenozoic vertebrate research Invertebrate research
