Rotary Paddle Bin Monitors ModelsKA/KAX,FS/FSX,PS/PSX

Monitor's line of rotarypaddle bin monitors consists of some of the most reliable, rugged and economical point levelcontrolsavailable for detection of dry bulk materials. These easy to installunitsare provenperformers in a wide variety of bulk materials. Monitor's paddle units can be used to eliminate bin overflow, maintain a predetermined material level, indicate plugging of conveyors and _,_atic lines_:.of=a numberof level control function._ _ Unlike many other availablepaddleunits,Monitor'spaddlelevel indicatorsincorporate a featurethat automatically shuts off the motor of the unit when the paddle is in a stalled position, which extends the life of the motor and minimizes maintenance. Monitoroffers a variety of rotary paddle bin monitors that can be configured with various motor voltages, a number of output circuits,

when there is no electricalpowerto the unit. The FSX is the explosion-proofversion of the FS model. PS/PSX-Monitor'sPS modeloffersfull protection against mechanicaland/or electrical failures for critical automated plant operations,or wherevisualproofof performance is required. A mechanical pulseswitchcommunicates thr_uqhan output terminal to verify the mechanic_a_'el_e(_'&loperation of the unit. PRINCIPLEOF OPERATION

The operation of Monitor's paddle level control products is quite simple. The unit is installed through the wall of the vessel, so approvals, and high-temperature options. Dependable Design that the paddle protrudes inside the vessel. A KA/KAX-Monitor'sKAunitis the mostpopular Reduces Component Wear small electric motor drives a paddlewhich of our paddle bin monitors. This model is ideal UL, FM, CSA, SAA rotates freely in the absence of material. for use in standard applications with a wide Approved When the paddle is impeded by material, the variety of materials. The KAX incorporates all motor rotates within the housing which trigthe features of the KA model, but is specifically designed to gers two switches. The first switch is a "dry" electrical contact meet explosion-proof standards, closure that is available to control a process function or alarm circuit. The second switch cuts the power to the motor, preFS/FSX-The FS electricallyfail-safemodelprovidesultimate ventinga lockedrotorcondition, thusextendingmotorlife. This performance for use wherever critical continuous operation is also activates the signaling device which is wired through the performed and controlled. This unit emits a warning whenever same motor switch. When the material level drops, the loaded an electrical malfunction of the unit is detected. This will occur stretched tension spring returns the motor to its original position when the motor circuit is open or shorted, a fuse is blown, or and the unit is reactivated.

PRE-INSTALLATION CONSIDERATIONS
1) Material Flow - When selecting a location for any rotary paddle bin monitor, choose a point in the vessel where the paddie will be out of the direct flow of incoming and outgoing material to prevent any mechanical damage that may be caused by the pressure of the flow. This is particularly important for materials with large, lumpy characteristics. The paddle unit must be positioned at a point where incoming material will reach and cover the paddle in its normal flow, and when receding, will flow away from the paddle in an even manner..'r:::E,t_ 2) Vibration Concerns - Mount at a location which is subject to limited vibration. The electro-mechanical nature of the rotary paddle bin monitor is not tolerant of excessive vibration which could compromise the operational life. Consult the factory when questionable conditions exist, 3) Guard Reinforcement - When using shaft extensions and guards into topreinforce mounted applications, select location whereSee it is feasible the guard to the a vessel wall. Rotary Paddle Bin Monitor Preparation: (See Figure 3) 1) Mounting Plate Attachment (ifappficable)- After using the mounting plate as a mounting hole template, (see Mechanical Installation portion of this bulletin), attach the mounting plate to the rotary paddle bin monitor prior to attaching to vessel. This is particularly advantageous if the paddle to be used is not an "insertable" type. (Some paddies are insertable through a 11 /4" 1 half co upling .) Thread the mounting plate on the padd,e un it's 1/4" NPT hub and tighten until snug. 2) Flexible Coupling Attachment (if applicable)- Remove lock pin from rotary paddle bin monitor. Screw the flex coupling

into the coupling provided on the paddle unit. Align "through hole" within the connection and secure with lock pin. 3) Extension Attachment (if applicable)- Remove lock pin from rotary paddle bin monitor or flex coupling. Screw the 1/4" pipe extension into the coupling provided on the paddle unit, or flex coupling. Align "through hole" within the connection and secure with lock pin. 4) Guard Attachment (if applicable)- In applications using a mounting plate with a full coupling, slide the 1 1/4" pipe over the shaft extension and secure to mounting plate coupling. The shaft extension should protrude from guard a distance of 4". When not using a mounting plate, the guard must be connected to paddle unit with a 1 1/4" full coupling and in some cases may require attachment after rotary paddle bin monitor installation to vessel. 5) Paddle Attachment (if applicable)- Paddle should be attached at this time only if variety chosen is an "insertable" type or if mounting plate is being utilized. Remove lock pin from applicable connection point (i.e. bin monitor, flex coupling, or extension). Screw the paddle into the applicable coupling. Align "through hole" within the connection and secure with lock pin.

Protective Baffles: (See Figure 2) The installation of protective baffles for low level monitoring is recommended for materials that weigh more than 65 Ibs/cu ft., have a tendency to pack, bridge or arch, or have unusual flow characteristics. This baffle can be created using a number of materials including angle irons, welded plates and pipe sections. This structure will keep the full weight of the material from bending or breaking the paddle. The baffle should be welded to the bin wall and should not extend more than 6" into the bin. Also, the lowest point of the baffle should be approximately 6" above the top of the paddle arc.

Extension/Guard Installation: (SeeFigure 6) 1) Typical Configuration- Shaft extensions are reeommendedfor top mountapplications onlyand shouldbe always accompanied by a flexiblecoupling. Shaftextensionsareconstructedof eithergalvanized or stainlesssteel1/4"schedule40 pipe. Shaftguardsarerecommended whenever extensionsare longerthan 18". Shaftguardsareconstructedof 11/4"schedule 40 pipe. For attachmentinstructions, refer to the PreInstallationConsiderations sectionof this bulletin, 2) Guard Reinforcement- Mechanical reinforcement of the shaft guard should be considered whenever a guard length greater than 72" is used. The guard should be anchored to the side wall with bracesto reducemechanicalstressat the connectionpointof the guardand to protectthe paddleunitfrom being physically damaged, 3) Guard/Extension Multi-Stage Assemblies- In applications which require long extensions and guards, it is necessary to connect multiple short pieces to ultimatelyachieve the desiredlength. In allcases, extensionsandguardsshouldnot exceed 144" since the operational life of the rotary paddle bin monitorsis decreasedwith excessivelengths. Shaft extensignscan be simplyconnectedone to another. Guardsmust use a 1 1/4" full couplingas an interfacebetweensections, CouplingsareavailablefromMonitor.

Hi-Temp. Models:(SeeFigure 7) 1) Mounting-Carefully handlethehi-tempgasketprovided withthe assembly.Using it as a template, markthe locations of the sixboltholeson thevessel. Drillsix holesat the diameter applicable to the attachment methodbeingused(i.e.tapped ,_r holes or clearanceholesfor bolt/nutcombination). Forexampie, drill six clearanceholes at 11/32"diameterfor use with 5/16"bolts. The boltsmaybe securedbytackweldingthe bolt headsto the vessel,or by an adjoiningnut. Cut a hole (suggestedsize 2-5") centeredwithin the bolt circleto allowthe paddle when attached to the bin monitor to fit within the bin. Attach gasket and hi-temp, paddle unit to the vessel positioning the conduitentrancein a mannerwhichrestrictsmoistureinfiltration. (NOTE: Wheneverpossible, attachitemssuchas flex couplings, extensions and paddles to the bin monitor prior to installation to vessel as described in the Pre-lnstallation Recommendations section of this bulletin.) 2) Extensions/Guards- Use of extensionsare permissible on Hi-Temp unitsalso. (SeeExtension/Guard Installation section). Installing guards on Hi-Temp models requires in-field modificationsConsultfactoryfor . guidance. 3) Air Cooling- The Hi-Temp, modelincludesan airconnection whichis usedto increasethe coolingcapacityof the systern thereforepermittingthe rotarypaddlebin monitorto be used in extremely warm applications. Use of air is required for any application whereinternalbintemperature exceeds300F in orderto protectcriticalcomponents of the paddleunitconstruction. 1) ExplosionProof Precautions - When installing an FSX, observethe regulations listedin the NationaE l lectrical Code regarding equipmentin hazardouslocations. In particular, install a conduitsealfittingwithin 18" of the rotarypaddlebin monitor, ensurepo weris disconnectedwheneverthe coveris removed, and upon completion ensure cover screws are secure and that no gasket or seal has been used between the cover and housing surfaces, 2) Factory Wiring - The industryexclusivemotor shutoff featureis prewiredat the factoryandmustnot be alteredin the field. Verify power requirement of the rotary paddle bin monitor by observingstamped motor voltage on the cover nameplatepriorto powerconnection. If a matchexists, connect poweras shown in Figures11-12. 4) Output Contacts - (See Figures 11-12) Route wires through 1" NPT conduit entrance. Models FS and FSX permit output connectionto the isolated switch only. Therefore, althoughan FS/FSXis describedas having2 or 3 circuits, only 1 or 2 respectively are available as output circuits. Do not connect output devices to the motor switch since false material indicationor damageto the internalcircuitscouldoccur. The switch terminalsare designatedwith COM (common),N.O. See applicable wiring diagram. Consider the following prior to wiring: IsolatedSwitch: a) Anyvoltagewithinlimitsof the switch(see Specifications) can be connected independent of the motorvoltageunlessthe R-Rterminalsare connected through the switch (See below). b) This switchpermitsminoramountsof paddlemotion without constant "on and off" signalling. c) Theload must not exceedthe ratedcurrentcapacity of theswitch(SeeSpecifications). If the R-Rterminals are wired through the switch, see Relay Impedance section below. 5) FaiI-SafeTerminals(R-R)-Theseterminalsprovideasignal wheneverthe paddleunit is operatingas expected. This "sense"or signal is constantwhetherthe "nosense"mode. Theseterminalscan rotarypaddlebin monitoris beconnectin ed two different ways. ExternalRelay: Connectthe terminalsto anexternalrelayas depictedin Figure 13. The wires can be routedin the same conduitas other power carrying wires. Under normal acceptable operation, the relay would continuouslyremainenergized. In the event of power or motor failure, the relay would be de-energized thereby informing thecontrolsystemthata failurehasoccurred. For applications interfacing this terminal to solid state inputs on a PLC or DCS, note that the signal is 1/2 wave rectifiedAC. Consult factory for additional support if necessary.

Through Isolated Switch: Connect the terminals through the isolated switch andto the external relayas depicted in Figures 14-15. Thewires canbe routed inthesameconduit as otherpower carrying wiresThe relay will followthe conditionof the isolatedswitchas long as the R-R terminalscontinueto supply power. In the eventof power or motor failure, the relay would be de-energized, regardless of the isolated switch status thereby informing the control system that a failure has occurred. For applications interfacing the R-Rterminalsto solidstate inputson a PLCor DCS,notethatthe signalis 1/2waverectified AC. Consulttactory for additionalsupportif necessary. RelayImpedance: The relaychosenshouldhavea ratedimpedance no lessthan 1000 ohms (for 115 VAC coil) or 2000 ohms (for 230 VAC coil) and it should be rated at the same voltage as supplied to the bin monitor. Failure to adhere to these guidelines could blow the fuse located on the fail safe module within the rotary paddlebin monitor. r rs/Fsx 2 CIRCUIT .... i:

CALIBRATION Paddle Selection: Thebest "calibration" can be achieved by properpaddleselection. Incorrect paddleselectionmayleadto false sensingand therefore a poor"calibration". Monitor offersa varietyof interchangeablepaddleassemblies to meetthe needs of a wide varietyof applications. Differentmaterial densities, particle sizes and flow characteristicsrequirespecificpaddlesto provide optimum performance. Insure that the paddle being used for the application correspondswith the recommendations found in Monitor's Paddle Selection Guide (Bulletin #215A). SensitivitySpring: 1) Setting Upon Receipt- (See Figure20)All rotarypaddle bin monitorsare shippedfromthe factorywith the springtension preset at the mid-range sensitivity setting. In most applications this setting results in acceptable operation assuming proper paddle selection. Setting can be verified by locating the cotter pin holding the spring to the switch bracket frame. The cotterpin will be insertedintothe middlehole. 2) Increased Sensitivity - When sensing extremely light materials(lessthan10Ibs/cuft.),it isdesirableto movethe cotter pin to the hole which exerts minimum spring tension. The reduced spring tension will permit switch actuation with less materialrestrictionat the paddle. 3) DecreasedSensitivity - Whensensingextremelyheavy materials(greaterthan75 Ibs/cuft.) or materials which havea tendency to stick or build up around shaft seal, it is desirable to movethe cotterpin to the hole whichexertsmaximumspring tension. The increased spring tension will require greater material restriction at the paddle but will prevent cases of the sensor remaining in the activated condition when material is absent, SENS TIVIT SPR NC ADJUSTMENT

TROUBLESHOOTING PROBLEM: Thepaddledoesnotrotate whenmaterial is absentandthe sensoris in "no sensing"mode. CAUSE/SOLUTION: 1) Verify electricap l oweris connected tothe proper terminations (Seewiring diagrams) andthatitis the propervoltageas depictedon the cover. 2) Verifyjumperwire is in place betweenthe power terminal and the motor switch (See wiring diagrams);not applicableon FS/FSX. 3) Verify motor operation by connecting the two motor leads directly to the incoming power. Motor will rotateif operational.Reconnect motorleads. 4) Verifyconditionof motorswitchby measuring voltage betweenitsCOMand NCterminals. Replace the switch if a voltage reading equivalent to the power source exists. Verify if motor is rotating. thethe clutch mechanism if the motor is Replace turning but paddle is not.

5)

PROBLEM:The paddle does not rotatewhen material is absent andthe sensor is in "sense" mode. CAUSE/SOLUTION: 1) Verifyconditionof sensitivityspring. It shouldnot becut, brokenor excessively stretchedto the point that is loses its ability to retract motor to "no sense"condition. Replaceif necessary. 2) Verify status of material around shaft and hub of rotary paddle bin monitor. Excessive buildup may restrict shaft from returning to "no sense" condtion.Clean material buildup. 3) Verify if drive shaft is free to rotate by manually twisting paddle. If rotation is restricted, replace the outersealand the two internalbearings. PROBLEM:The paddlerotatesbutmaterialis notsensed when the paddle is covered.

CAUSE/SOLUTION: 1) Verifyisolatedswitchis activatedpriorto the motor switch when the paddle is halted, if sequence is incorrect, realignswitcheson the bracket. Consult the factory if problem persists. 2) Verify switch operation by measuring continuity while in the "sense" and "no sense" modes. Replace switchesif contactstates are incorrect. 3) Verify that the paddle being used in the application follows the guidelines outlined in the Paddle Selection Guide (Bulletin #215A). Change paddle to one capable of sensing lighter material.
