2.1.3

The rules to be followed in determining the size and locations of manifolds are as follows: a. Manifolds shall be supplied when there are six or more connections located so the maximum distance from the supply lead to the item being traced does not exceed approximately 18 meters. In establishing the maximum distance, assume that tracer supplies and returns are, routed NorthSouth, EastWest and vertically; not the shortest distance between two points. The developed length for each supply and return shall include a 10% allowance for indirect routed such as U type configurations to avoid interferences. Manifolds shall be 3 inches in size and mounted either horizontally or vertically. Connections not used are to be blocked off and will serve as leads for future connections.

b.

c.

d. e. 2.1.4 2.1.5 2.1.6 2.1.7 2.1.8 2.1.9 2.1.10

A single Y type strainer shall be installed in the supply line to the manifold and located as close to the manifold as practical. The location of tracer steam and condensate manifolds will be shown, where possible, on the model or arrangement drawings. The first block valve on steam mains for tracer manifold supplies will be located preferentially on the model and/or shown on the drawings. The location of condensate returns to condensate mains shall be determined by the personnel at the construction site. Block valves shall be accesible from grade, ladder or platforms and shall be grouped in central locations. All tracer supplies and tracers shall be routed to avoid pockets. Steam supplies and manifolds shall be arranged to provide the most economial installation without sacrificing freezing, operation or maintenance design considerations. Each tracer supply point shall be located at an elevation above the highest point of the item being traced. Condensate from tracing steam traps shall normally be returned to the condensate return system. Where this is not economical and with the prior approval of the Owner, the condensate may be discharged to grade.

2.2.1

Identification of Tracing System

The steam supply line and the condensate line shall be provided with metal tags bearing the number corresponding to the tracer number, as shown on the Tabulation of Tracer drawings. The tags shall be located on or adjacent to both the steam supply block valve and the trap on the condensate return end. The Dymo Model 101100 Tapewriter using stainless steel tape fastened with pop rivets is an easy and inexpensive method of metal tagging.

Design of Tracer
Tracers shall be installed in accordance with Appendices I, II, III, VI, VII, VIII and IX. Appendices I thru IX are typical and should be used for guidance only. Tracers shall follow the contour of valves, pumps, and other equipment having nonregular surfaces. Pockets shall be avoided or kept to a minimum. No special straightening of tubing is necessary. A slight waviness can serve to accommodate expansion. Tracers on horizontal lines shall be installed in accordance with Appendices I and II. Multiple tracers used on vertical lines shall be equally spaced around the circumference of the pipe. See Appendix II. For change of direction, all tubing shall be bent and have a minimum bend radius of six times the outside diameter of the tubing. Crimped tubes will be rejected. Each tracer tube shall be individually trapped except at bypasses at control valves or other similar hookups. No parallel tracers shall be combined and discharged to a single trap. All lines are to be routed in a neat and orderly manner using the following guidelines: Tracer supply and return lines shall be located on the manifolds so the run of the piping will peel off to the item being traced, rather than cross over other piping.

Any offset of these lines, other than 90, should be made in the horizontal plane rather than the vertical plane which will tend to conceal these offsets by blending with the vertical and horizontal lines of the plant. All lines shall be routed and shall be at right angles to the nearest pipe runs and shall be free from any sag so as to maintain a neat appearance. Supply and return lines shall be set to the same radius in order to present a uniform flow.

3.2
3.2.1

Appurtenance Tracing
Sample connections, drains, vents, and closecoupled noncritical instruments attached to pipelines or equipment shall be traced with the pipeline or equipment tracer. The first shutoff valve on a branch line off a steam traced line shall be traced, although the branch line may not be traced.

3.2.2

3.3
3.3.1

Instruments
All instruments which require steam tracing, except closecoupled noncritical types, shall be provided with individual tracers.

3.4
3.4.1

Relief Valve
Apply tracer at relief valve as close as possible to valve seat to provide complete protection.

3.5
3.5.1

Drains
Tracers need not have low point drains.

3.6
3.6.1

The above lenths are based on 1/2 inch OD tubing. Multiply these lengths by 0,75 for 3/8 inch OD tubing. Use 3/8 inch OD tubing instead of 1/2 inch OD to facilitate bending at control valve stations etc. These lengths apply to open trap discharge and insulation thickness of 1 inch or 1 1/2 inches. For closed condensate return systems, reduce the tracer lengths 0,9 meters for each Kg of back pressure at the trap. Where pockets cannot be avoided, such as in tracing of valves, flanges, etc., the sum of tracer pocket heights in meters shall not exceed 0,70 x 10% of inlet steam pressure.

3.7
3.7.1 3.7.2

Trap Hookup
The basic steam trap shall be thermodynamic type as specified in Paragraph 4.3 These traps shall be used for steam pressures of 0,35 to 42,2 kg/cm2 (gauge) where closed condensate return systems do not cause back pressures at the trap in excess of 80% of the trap inlet pressure. Steam tracing installation shall be arranged to facilitate convenient removal for replacement or repair of the trap. For a closed condensate system, with or without back pressure on the system, locate traps close to and above the condensate manifold or condensate return line. For an open condensate system, locate traps close to point of discharge so condensate will drain freely from the discharge side of the trap (see Appendix IV). Thermodynamic traps shall preferably be installed in the vertical. Where necessary to install in the horizontal, the trap shall be rotated 90 so the bonnet of the trap is on the side.

3.7.5 3.7.6 3.7.7

3.8

Tracer Condensate Collection

Locate the tracer condensate header, whenever possible, at an elevation low enough to permit flow of condensate from all connected tracer condensate lines.

3.9
3.9.1

Strainers
Where manifolds are used, a single Y strainer shall be installed in the supply line to the manifold and no additional strainer will be required ahead of the traps.

Spacers shall be provided between tracers and the piping or equipment when the following fluids are in the line being traced. Caustic fluids Acid fluids Fluids where hot spots will accelerate the corrosion rate due to the electrolytic properties Heat sensitive fluids.

3.10.4 3.10.5

3.12
3.12.1

Supports
All pipe and tubing including tracer supply and condensate returns installed for tracing purposes shall be adequately supported in the field using channels and clamps similar to Unistrut or equal. Tracers shall be supported from steel wherever possible. If there is no steel in the area and tracers are supported from pipe, select lines which are cold or uninsulated if possible. If supported from as insulated line, provision shall be made for thermal expansion.
