Review for Large Screen HDTV

Meet Market Needs

The transition to HD is a major event in the history of TV. The first major transition was from B/W to Color, a comparatively simple change. The HD transition is two-fold: analog to digital and high resolution. Consumers are awe-struck by the increase in detail and clarity.

Price Has Come Down Significantly

Billions have been invested in new and larger fabs to supply the HDTV market with no panel maker as true winner (consumers do win!).

Historically, 80% of TVs sold have had an average price of under $400. The majority of FPD TVs 40~50 pricing are around at $500-$1100. The majority of FPD TVs 60~70 pricing are around at $1500- $2500. The majority of FPD TVs 80 pricing is under $4500 in USA.

Cost Reduction and Profit Margins are critical to the Health of the FPD Manufacturing Industry

What is the next solution? Will OLED FPD manufacturers repeat the same TFT LCD cut-throat strategy? or any other alternative? Question?on and on .

Manufacturing Cost & Channel Margins Require Adjustment

. The cost of manufacturing and channel margins have decreased substantially. Cost reductions are not trivial and must be attacked on all levels of the supply chain: Equipment, Materials, Technology, Supply Chain Efficiency, Yields, etc

Challenge Present and Expectation Tomorrow

Review of LCoS Display Major Event and Migration in the Past and Now at its Turning Point of the Critical Moment
Scale
In 2004, Intel, Sony, JVC, Hitachi, Philips etc. entered into LCoS display technology arena and generated even more extraordinary interests CES 2001 at Las Vegas, LCoS display technology and product was first introduced and stimulated a great excitement. In 2006, Sony sold approximately 1M units of LCoS rear projection TV in Northern America within a half year. It created an excellent market miracle. International market of LCoS technology is ramping up again. Innovative new technology is developed after 10 year up and down cycle. JDC, with over dozen patents and IPs, has built up a new outstanding on-silicon display technology and is moving forward with bright future. 2010 JDC was established and 2007MDCSpatialight, acquired all the Brillian, TMDCUMO were IPs and assets failed to stay in LCoS imager from eLCOS. chip business and filed bankruptcy. Splendid Optronics Tech. Co. Ltd
Sony also dropped LCoS rear Projection TV because of business conflict with flatpanel LCD TV. was established and produced 71 LCoS Databoard for educational market with touching functionat Wuhan ,China

Palm size LCoS projector was introduced with LCoS imager provided by Himax, Displaytech (Micron), Aurora In 2008Sony was (OmniVision) and Syndiant. JVC also quitted LCoS never dropping LCoS TV due to financial problem. but continued market By end of 2007, most front projector and of major display LCoS imagers and companies retreat driver chip. from LCoS business. 16

Mobility and Market Value

Mobility and Resolution is Market Value ! Market Assumption: What if ?
1. On-Glass Display or On-Silicon Display ? 2. Panel-centric or Box-centric ? 3. When the viewing environment changed in the future with adjustable ambient light in house such as energy saving LED lighting with dimming function, is brightness still the only concerned? What about the impact of resolution, contrast ratio with better gray levels and color quality ? 4. What about market price of ipad is equivalent to a 42 flat-panel TV sales price. . 5.What about all the computer peripherals and high end consumer products have built in projection functions (around 2014), in addition to the concept of light weight, compact (thin & tiny) and green (low power consumption), what will be the required projection display resolution? 720P, 1080P or higher? 6. What will be the tolerable price difference between a portable projector, which has the capability of 1080p resolution and projected size 50 to100, compared with a 1080p flat-panel LCD? 7. What about iphone/ipad series products have all implemented with quality of retina 326 dpi resolution (78m) or equivalent class or above 1080p visualized effect, what situation will be for the development trend of the associated 3C products?

LCoS Projector Can Easily Achieves iPhone Viewing Experience 1080P Mini Projector can easily achieve the required resolution of iPhone retina display. Only 1080P provides significantly larger screen sizes at 50 or 75cm viewing distance away while keeping the same viewing experiences of a retina display. The resolution, screen size and viewing distance are the key factors and co-related with viewing experience.

JDCs On-Silicon Core Technology: Patents and IP

( Accumulated 15 Years Development ) 1. Jasper Display has over a dozen granted patents (including 11 - US Inventions, 1-Taiwan, 1-China) and 23 other patents filed and pending in US, China, Taiwan and Japan. Proprietary On-Silicon IC backplane circuit design and associated driving technologies of LCoS microdisplay based on standard arraystructured SRAM architecture: A unique digital driving technique and implementation based on pulse-width modulation (associated with both time and space) to perform data filling (or scrolling) mechanism for image frames, enabling high yield rate and high performance, resulting in the most efficient pixel plane updating speed and voltage level consistency with liquid crystal electro-optic mode. It solves the fundamental image flicker, image sticking,.., etc artifacts, leakage or cross-talk of analog driving method causing voltage overshoot etc. problems. Efficiently partitioned video signal functions and paths enable efficient pulse-width modulation giving accurate mili-volt control levels which speed LC control level adjustments to just micro-seconds.

Competing Technologies: in Display

Jaspers Digital LCoS vs. Other Digital LCoS
Smallest pixel size 3.74 m pixels, which means cost effective. Best modulation implementation => Best image quality
- Proprietary patented Jasper modulation method allows to process at least 12-bit ( 212 ) with 4096 gray levels per channel up to1 trillion ( 240) processed internally in theory with most smooth image quality (or shadings) exactly like a natural color ever seen .

Highest yield - Simplest digital pixel available (10 transistors vs. 20+ ones) - Fewest semiconductor masks - Most uniform (flat) devices Original inventor of LCoS technology behind the developments
35

Competing Technologies: in Display

Jaspers Digital LCoS vs. Analog LCoS
Use of PWM enables accurate, uniform pictures. (Time is more accurate to control than voltage.) Sharper image appearance. (First hand comparison) Enables far smaller displays - Jasper 0.33 FHD vs. Sony 0.61 FHD - Jasper 0.70 QHD (3840 x 2160, 4k2k) No significant photo leakage under high intensity illumination. Higher silicon yield - Immune to minor gate & junction leakage defects that kill analog LCoS - No bad pixels
36

Competing Technologies: in Display

Jaspers Digital LCoS vs. DLP
Jasper LCoS is fundamentally lower cost - Liquid Crystal processing is less expensive than mirror processing. (Higher yield and lower bulk cost) - Use standard process semiconductor fabs worldwide. - Can build far higher resolution parts for laser projection systems at significantly lower cost. - Reports of TI budgetary quotes for 1080P DLP significantly exceed those for Jasper LCoS 1080P. (Smaller parts at higher resolution) Jasper LCoS has fundamentally higher image quality - Better low end gray scale & gamma implementation.
