Specific Lesson Learning Goals Students will be able to: Make predictions about the novel Read the Chapter 1 of the novel Answer oral questions about the first chapter of the novel

Students Prior Knowledge: Students have not read the novel before and they have not yet been introduced to the novel. The students have previously engaged in the Clouds of Wonder activity in relation to other lessons and activities. Students also have experience in making predictions. Preparation: A copy of the novel Charlottes Web by E.B. White 21 copies of the Clouds of Wonder worksheet Questions about chapter one Whiteboard and whiteboard markers

Questions: Has anyones predictions come true yet? Does anyone want to change one of his or her predictions? Would you feel the same way as Fern in her situation? Would any of you like a baby pig to look after? Have any of you even seen or looked after a baby pig? What do you think of the name Wilbur? Are there any predictions you would like to make now?

LESSON PLAN
Time: Start 35 Minutes 45 Minutes 60 Minutes Lesson Progression Gather the students at their desks and ask for quiet and attention Let the students know that we are going to be starting our term novel Show the students the novel and ask them to get out their own copies of the novel Explain to the students that they are going to be making predictions about what they think the novel is about and what will happen in the story Ask the students if they remember how the Clouds of Wonder work Recap with the students on how the Clouds of Wonder work draw the clouds on the whiteboard Ask the students to make a few predictions write these predictions on the whiteboard in the drawn clouds Ask a volunteer to hand out the Clouds of Wonder and ask the students to begin making their predictions Walk around the classroom speaking with the students about their predictions and making corrections or advising where necessary Ask the students to discuss their predictions Ask the students to place their worksheets on my desk and then sit quietly Ask the students to follow the novel as I am reading aloud to them Read the first chapter of the novel aloud to the students Ask the students questions about the first chapter of the novel Explain to the students that we will be reading the novel over the rest of the term Ask the students to pack away their things and put their novel away Congratulate the students on a great lesson and prepare them for the start of the next lesson Informal Assessment of Student Outcomes What will you assess?
