days. But some people are avoiding making home repairs because they
are worried about the cost. Please let your readers know that some

Blossoms
A few years back I tried to
become a gardener. I think of it as
my big science experiment. I did
all right for a beginner, but still left
a lot to be desired.
My squash came down with a
fungus. Many times I had to snatch
my cantaloupe and eggplant out of
the mouths of hungry turtles, and
one pumpkin survived out of the
whole packet of seeds I planted.
The lone pumpkin prematurely fell
off the vine in August, as did our
hopes for an autumn pumpkin on
the front porch.
I planted another garden the
next spring and compulsively
checked on its progress. The
tomatoes didn’t look much larger
than when I planted them. Flower
seeds germinated, but I became
frustrated by not seeing blossoms.
A corn stalk sprouted. One out of
20 planted.
I felt impatient. Sometimes
I’m like that as a mother, too.
This morning I passed by my son’s
bedroom and noticed that his
drawers were closed, but every
article of clothing he owns stuck
out.
The clothes I folded neatly
yesterday are now wrinkled and
smooshed.
“I don’t know how many
times I have to show him how to
do this,” I grumbled as I refolded.
I picked up a wet towel in my
daughter’s bedroom floor,
gritching, too, as I hung it up in the
bathroom to dry.
Keep your feet off the
furniture. Remember to be helpful.
Clean up your messes.
These are lessons I’ve taught
for years. But sometimes parenting
does feel like one step forward two
steps back. And you wonder when
you are going to see growth.
If I’m going to keep this
gardening comparison going, I
must admit that when I stepped
into my garden years back, I did
see progress. The seeds became
plants, and if I’d taken my
measuring stick out I would have
been amazed at just how quickly
things really did grow.
My disappointment comes
when I expect too much, too
quickly, and forget about the joy
that comes in watching something
beautiful gradually unfold.

if he slept in them, but when I
survey his room I see that his bed

Fishing for Ideas for Outdoor Fun
It doesn't take much to get
kids hooked on fishing. If your
children are tipping the scales in
favor of going fishing for your
family outings, put your local
fishing opener on your calendar
this month and make your plans.
But before your kids hit the dock
or climb aboard a boat, there are a
few things to do to prepare for this
fun family sport.
Safety first:
--Check to see if life vests fit
your kids properly this year.
Remind them to wear vests at all
times while near water.
--Use a metal file to remove
barbs from fishing hooks that
young anglers will be using. This
precaution can help avoid serious
injury to the skin, as well as
prevent snags in clothing.
--Pick up a bottle of good-quality
sunscreen, and have hats with
visors for everyone.
Fishing fun:
--Practice casting the fishing
line without a hook in the backyard
or at a park. Substitute a piece of
hook-and-loop fastener such as
Velcro attached to a weighted end
of the hook. Place small toys with
pieces of matching Velcro attached
to them on the lawn. Try to "fish"
for the toys.
--Make a pint-size tackle box
from a cardboard egg carton. Fill
the spaces with useful items such
as a bobber, canned or fresh corn
kernels for bait, and some mini
peanut-butter sandwiches in case
the angler gets hungry for a snack.
Use brass fasteners to attach fabric
or leather strips on top of the
carton to make it an easy carryall.
Extra tip: Outwit the worms!
The common way to transport
worms and dirt to the fishing hole
is with a small tin can with a
plastic snap-on lid. But when it
comes time to bait the hook, the
worms are usually hiding at the
bottom of the container. Here's an
easy solution: Before scooping
worms and dirt into the can,
remove the bottom with a can
opener and snap on another tight-
fitting plastic lid. Your kids can
open either end when it comes time
to fish and can easily find the bait.
(Remember to poke holes in the
plastic lids to allow air in the can.)

What Does Money Mean to You?

"The Secret Language of Money" by David Krueger and John Mann
p (McGraw Hill) is subtitled "How to Make Smarter Financial Decisions
and Live a Richer Life." Krueger, a psychiatrist, combines psychology,
3/23p economics and neuroscience to address questions like the ones above.
Because there is a "secret" language of money, many of us make
c mistakes. Nearly every chapter in the book contains a quiz, designed to
help us understand why we do what we do. The quizzes are deceptively
simple (such as "What is your current income, and what level of income
would it take to insure your happiness and contentment?") It is in the
explanations that our patterns are revealed.
According to the book, all of us have a "money story," an
unconscious tale we tell ourselves about who we are, what money means
to us and how much we're worth. The problem is the secrets we keep

we've really run up or the way we rationalize an indulgent purchase. For
example, when we make a risky purchase, there is a chemical
component to our action, a rush that comes in anticipation of making the
purchase. That same chemical reaction shuts down the minute the
purchase is made. Krueger shows us how to decipher what our actions
really mean.
"The Secret Language of Money" is for anyone who's ever been in debt,
been rich but unhappy, been caught in an impulse buy/return cycle with
merchandise, made promises and bargains about cutting down on
spending, been a workaholic or shopped to satisfy feelings of envy or
power. In other words, "Secret Language" has something for everyone
who spends money.
Something to think about: Name five things you truly value. Then ask
yourself which of those five things you would trade for money. Your
answer says a lot about your relationship with money.
