1A) Derive an expression for the radiation heat transfer between two parallel infinite gray surfaces with usual notations. 1B) A flat plate 1 m wide and 1.5 m long is to be maintained at 90C in air when free stream temperature is 10C. Determine the velocity at which air must flow on both sides of the plate (along its length) so that the rate of energy dissipation from the plate is 3.75 kW. Justify the answer. Use: Nu = 0.664 (Re) (Pr) . for laminar flow . for turbulent flow Nu = [0.036 (Re)0.8- 836] (Pr) Take the following air properties: = 1.0877 kg/m3, k = 0.02813 W/mC, Cp = 1007.3 J/kgC, = 2.029x10-5 kg/ms and Pr = 0.703. 2A) Show by dimensional analysis for free convective heat transfer Nusselt number is a function of Grashoff number and Prandtl number. 2B) A simple counter flow heat exchanger operates under the following conditions: Fluid-A, inlet and outlet temperatures 80C and 40C; Fluid-B, inlet and outlet temperatures 20C and 40C; The exchanger is cleaned, causing an increase in the overall heat transfer coefficient by 10 % and inlet temperature of fluid B is changed to 30C. What will be new outlet temperatures of fluid A and of fluid B. Assume heat transfer coefficients and capacity rates are unaltered by temperature changes. 3A) Derive an expression for the temperature distribution and heat transfer in case of a solid cylinder subjected to internal heat generation and with specified surface temperature. 3B) A carbon steel pipe ( k = 45 W/mK), 78 mm in inner diameter and 5.5 mm thick has 8 longitudinal fins 1.5 mm thick. Each fin extends 30 mm from the (MME-306) Page 1 of 2

pipe wall. If the wall temperature, ambient temperature and surface heat transfer coefficient are 150C, 28C and 75 W/m2K, respectively. Calculate the percentage increase in heat transfer rate per meter length for the finned tube over the plain tube. Consider heat loss from the tip of fins. 4A) With the help of an energy balance equation, derive an expression for the temperature distribution and heat transfer rate through a fin with end insulated. 4B) Find steady flow heat flux through a composite slab made of two materials A and B. Thermal conductivity of two materials vary linearly with temperature as: kA = 0.4(1+0.008T) and kB = 0.5(1+0.001T) Where T is temperature in C. The thickness: LA = 100 mm and LB = 50 mm. The outside temperature of slab A is 600C and of slab B is 30C. 5A) With necessary diagram derive an expression for LMTD for a counter flow heat exchanger. 5B) An electric cable, 8 mm in diameter is covered by plastic sheathing (k = 0.18 W/mK). The surface temperature of cable was observed as 50C when it is exposed to air at 20C with convective coefficient of 12 W/m2K. Calculate (i) The thickness of insulation to keep the wire as cool as possible. (ii) Surface temperature of insulated cable, if the intensity of current flowing in the conductor remains unchanged. 5C) With graph discuss the various regimes of pool boiling. 6A) Differentiate the following (i) Fin effectiveness and Efficiency (ii) Radiosity and Irradiation (iii) Dropwise condensation and Filmwise condensation (iv) Thermal conductivity and Thermal diffusivity 6B) Two large parallel planes with emissivity 0.6 are at 900 K and 300 K. A radiation shield with one side polished and having emissivity of 0.05, while the emissivity of other side is 0.4 is proposed to be used. Which side of the shield to face the hotter plane, if the temperature of shield is to be kept minimum ? Justify your answer. 6C) A vertical plate 500 mm high and maintained at 30C is exposed to saturated steam at atmospheric pressure. Calculate the following. (i) The rate of heat transfer. (ii) The condensate rate per hour per meter width for condensation Fluid properties are: k = 66.4x10-2 W/mC, = 980.3 kg/m3, hfg = 2257 kJ/kg, = 434x10-6 kg/ms. Use correlation:
