Concept and Characteristics of Disc Springs

Disc Springs are conically formed
angular Discs which are loaded in the
axial direction. They can be statistically
loaded as well subject to continuous
dynamic loads.

Springs operate axially.

Greater security of operation
service, as failure of one Disc Spring
element within a stack does not
totally lead of failure of entire
assembly.

Low maintenance cost as any of the

parallel stacking.

Outstanding Features
High load with limited travel (small

compare to other springs.(see fig.2)
Longer service or fatigue life.
Ability to function as a individual

height with Disc Spring having bearing
flats the thickness t is reduced to t' by
the manufacturer. The reduction is
approximately 94% of the nominal
thickness. The table shown below is
particularly significant for parallel

Special Disc Springs are made of high quality Premium

Spring

Steel,

Chrome Vanadium (En47). And also

available with zinc plating, cadmium plating.

For corrosive environment, Disc Springs made from
Martensitic Stainless Steel duly heat treated are strongly
recommended.
For special application Disc Springs for non magnetic
stainless steel are also manufactured against request.

DISC SPRINGS
TOLERANCES

DISC SPRINGS FOR FLANGE APPLICATION

Disc Springs are an elastic mechanical elements. When used in bolt joints that are
subject to thermal or mechanical shock, they deflect and move with the bolted joint.
Hence, they compensate for developed looseness. The reactive power of the disc spring
serves to keep the bolt joints tight under all conditions. Principal applications include
piping joints, valve and pump connections, and others in the petrochemical field.
A principal cause of flange leakage is abnormally high load produced by thermal
expansion and contraction of a bolted joint Generally, flanges are under static load
conditions. However, in large piping systems, there may also be mechanical shock from
compressor related piping. Thermal and mechanical shock differential can cause
variation and yielding in bolt loads. To protect against these conditions, always use Disc
Springs under the nut or bolt head.
Prestressing or torquing the bolt at factory installation is not sufficient to protect the
flange joint under unexpected temperature variations and mechanical shock loads in
the field. By absorbing peak stresses, Disc Springs prevent damage to the bolt, gasket
and joint.
