The solar package is selected according to how much water is used in the
property. The table below provides a guide as to the cylinder size for a given
property. Once selected this will determine how many solar collectors are required

kit for your to heat the water. The solar kit can then be read off from the table.

process.

Step 2 What roofing kit is needed

Once the number of collectors and cylinder size has been determined, select the
roof kit. This should be selected to suit the roof type of the property. The kits come
with the following mounting options:
• Pitched tile roof
• Pitched slate roof
• Mounted flush with the roof using the integrated roof kit*
• Flat roof – a dedicated roof kit that provides the correct elevation
for the collector.
*This requires a section of the roof covering to be removed which is then replaced with the solar panel.

Step 3 Select Dimplex solar kit

Step 1 will have determined the number of collectors you require and Step 2 the
roof type.

Once these requirements have been determined the appropriate solar kit can
easily be selected from the table below.

the Dimplex
all electric
low carbon
solution
Building Regulations Part L deals with the
energy efficiency of buildings. In order to
comply with the requirements for new
buildings, designers must demonstrate that
predicted building carbon dioxide emissions
are less than a calculated maximum target
level.

The benefits of low capital costs, simple

installation, faster building speeds and no
pipework or flues means electric heating is the
preferred solution for many developers, in
particular for flats and apartments. Combining
cost effective electric heating with solar as a
low carbon water heating solution provides an DuoHeat® radiator
excellent means of meeting the requirements of
Part L.

For buildings containing multiple dwellings

such as flats, it is possible to use a whole block
methodology to demonstrate compliance. This
has the benefit that flats within the block with
the lower carbon dioxide emissions can be
used to trade off against those with higher
emission rates, meaning each individual unit
does not have to comply, only the overall
block.

In fact combining the intelligent use of solar

water heating for top floor flats with the block
assessment method can provide an extremely EPX panel heater
cost-effective route to Part L compliance, while
keeping installation straight forward as only the
flats nearest the roof space are affected.

Combinations of measures to
achieve compliance
Because the DER is greater than the TER target, this
'worst case' scenario building fails to comply with the
new Part L requirements. A number of options are
available to provide the necessary improvements:
• Improve the thermal performance of the
resource
This example illustrates just one of a wide variety of compliance strategies
building fabric
that can be employed to meet the requirements of Part L.
• Improve the controllability of the
heating system For more details on complying with Part L and a range of other issues
• Reduce the glazed area affecting the heating industry visit Resource – www.dimplex-resource.co.uk
• Add solar water heating
• Reduce air permeability

By improving the fabric of the building, updating the

electric heating to the latest, most controllable
products and introducing a solar water heating system
comprising 2 square metre panels on the top floor
flats only, carbon dioxide emissions are reduced
allowing the property to meet the TER for the building.

The costs of taking this approach can be less than

meeting the requirements by improving the fabric of
the building to the best achievable standards alone or
making large reductions in air permeability which may
not always be practical.
