Security Models
¾ User centric vs. object centric

¾Security models are different

ƒ In BusinessObjects 5.1/6.x: set rights per group/user
ƒ In BusinessObjects XI: Set access control lists (ACLs) per
folder/resource

¾Inheritance in XI security model

ƒ In BusinessObjects XI, a user cannot have more rights than
its parent group (unless inheritance is turned off).
ƒ This is different from the BusinessObjects 5.1/6.x model
¾Different administration tools
ƒ In BusinessObjects 5.1/6.x: Supervisor, visual
representation of group hierarchy.
ƒ In BusinessObjects XI : CMC, Web based

4
Migration Challenges

¾Different Security Model

¾Domains are Migrated as Input FRS folders
¾Supported Configurations are Different
¾Post- Import Verification Required
¾Different Licensing Model

Slide 14 Copyright © 2006 Xenon Consulting Inc. All rights reserved.

Migration Challenges

¾ License: Using Named Users

„ If the number of existing Named user licenses is not greater
than the number of users to be migrated, then all users will
not be able to login
„ Set Named Users in the CMC for each user or thru a script
using Admin SDK

Slide 16 Copyright © 2006 Xenon Consulting Inc. All rights reserved.

5
Migration Steps

¾ Planning and assessment

• Calculate platform and version changes required to go from
source to destination (Supported Web app servers etc.)
• Define the migration options, roadmap and timing.
• Get familiar with CMC and CCM
• Good time to pinpoint obsolete objects
• Certified resource (BECP) involvement increases success.

¾ Migration
• Install the BusinessObjects XI Release 2 system
• Run the migration tools and utilities

• Check security settings, universes, and reports
• SDK-based customizations may need to be rewritten

¾ Deployment
• Post-migration testing and tuning

Slide 19 Copyright © 2006 Xenon Consulting Inc. All rights reserved.

6
Migration Wizard

Slide 20 Copyright © 2006 Xenon Consulting Inc. All rights reserved.

Migration Wizard
¾ Installed automatically
¾ Can be installed standalone (custom) or on 5.x/6.x
¾ Installing on XIR2 speeds up connection to the CMS
and the FRS.
¾ Windows Based Application

Slide 21 Copyright © 2006 Xenon Consulting Inc. All rights reserved.

Migration Wizard

¾ Imports content from source repository

¾ Updates content (e.g. Universe IDs in reports)
¾ Saves content into target CMS and FRS
¾ Can be used to migrate a Unix deployment

Slide 22 Copyright © 2006 Xenon Consulting Inc. All rights reserved.

7
Import Wizard

¾ Must configure firewalls to give access to CMS

¾ The Import Wizard requires four connections:
¾ BOMain.key file to connect to the source repository and a
GS ID and password to connect to it
¾ ID and password to connect to the target repository
database
¾ Path to Storage/Mail on the source server (optional)
¾ Path to Storage/Users on the source server (optional)

8
What Does Not Migrate

Slide 26 Copyright © 2006 Xenon Consulting Inc. All rights reserved.

To Migrate or Not To Migrate Security ?

¾ Should I Migrate Security or Not?
ƒ less work initially
ƒ Recreating security means more work but a cleaner, well
designed security schema

¾To Migrate
ƒ Make sure you import groups/users and content (docs and
universes) at the same time
ƒ This will import both access rights and universe overloads

¾To Not Migrate

ƒ Select the option “No, do not migrate security”

Best Practices

9
Best Practices

¾ Back up any resources stored in the repository.

¾ Export locally stored resources to the repository.

¾ Use a fast hard disc for the import wizard with lots of disc
space
¾ Use a Fast connection between both the 5/6.x system and

the XIR2 system.

Slide 29 Copyright © 2006 Xenon Consulting Inc. All rights reserved.

Best Practices

¾ Consider converting Full client docs to webi doc to reduce

deployment costs
¾ Get familiar with the CMC

¾ Migrating to BusinessObjects XI Release 2 into a staging

area is a safe approach enabling migration rollback
¾ Re-creating security means more work upfront, but results
in a cleaner, well-designed security schema once
migration completes
¾ Migrate because there is a need not because its available
