THE RISING AFRICA: OPPORTUNITIES & CHALLENGES FOR INDIA
Optimism regarding Africa can be seen in clichs like Africa rising, Africa Renaissance, Africa century, Africa booming being used for it. Africa is rising because of new thinking, new opportunities and new commercial vibrancy. Africa is worlds fastest growing continent with fastest growing consumer market and also a youngest market with about 40% population under 15 years of age. Africas growth is not driven solely by commodity boom or export of natural resources but also from growth of the sectors like transportation, retail, manufacturing, telecommunication, infrastructure and power generation. UNCTAD has reported that FDI inwards Africa has grown from $15 billion in 2002 to $46 billion in 2012 demonstrating the growing confidence of the world community in doing business with Africa. By modernizing business framework, Africa is opening up vast business opportunities for other emerging economies like China, India and Brazil. India is conscious of Africas big growing consumer market and is tapping it successfully. In agriculture, telecommunication, e-education, e-health and pharmaceuticals, India has innovatively invested in Africa. India can assist in human capital formation in Africa through technology and skill transfer. It can facilitate Africa to become processor of commodities and train in production of labour intensive goods and services. Besides these already explored sectors, India has vast opportunity in banking and insurance sector. More than 2/3rd of sub-Saharan Africa is unbanked and its financial sector is expected to grow by about 40% in other 10 years. At the same time the rising Africa poses several challenges to India and other developing countries. Africas increasing industrial production and improving quality will give India a big competition for its consumer goods. Countries presently investing FDI in India will have wider options in investing in countries of Africa. Indias bilateral trade with African countries may decrease if Africa becomes internally well integrated continent economically. African development and growth will pose a serious competition and challenge to India in providing oil and hydro carbons as its own demand for these will increase. The Department of African Studies & Centre for African Studies, University of Delhi, proposed to organize two days National Conference to deliberate on the theme. The main objective of the Conference is to provide a platform to discuss on present position of Africa and new opportunities and challenges that has thrown up on India in our engagement with Africa. The conference intends to look at Africa from new perspective- different from traditional view of Africa as the continent ridden with poverty, conflict & diseases and explore the new paradigm of relationship.
