Sison, RN TITLE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN EXTENDED DUTY HOURS AND WORK EFFICIENCY OF STAFF NURSES OF ST. PAUL HOSPITAL
Statement of the problem: This study aimed to identify the relationship between
extended duty hours and work efficiency of staff nurses in St. Paul Hospital. Specifically, this sought to answer the following questions: 1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of the following: frequency 1.1. Age 1.2. Gender 1.3. Civil Status 1.4. Highest educational attainment 1.5. Length of stay in St. Paul Hospital 1.6. Unit of Assignment? 2. What is the perception of the respondents in extended duty hours according to: 2.1. Nature of extension of duty hours 2.1.1. Hours served for extended duty 2.1.2. Frequency of the extended duty served
performance of their duties and functions with respect to: 3.1. Competency 3.2. Efficiency and Effectiveness 3.3. Time Management? 4. What are the perceived effects of extended duty hours with their work efficiency? 5. Is there a significant difference between the performance of duties and functions when grouped according to their profile variables? 6. Is there a significant relationship between extended duty hours and work efficiency of the respondents? Hypotheses 1. There is a significant difference between the performance of duties and functions when grouped according to their profile variables. 2. There is a significant relationship between extended duty hours and work efficiency of the respondents.

Research Design The researchers made use of the descriptive correlational method. According to Sevilla (1992) the descriptive
correlational survey method is designed to determine the extent to which different variables are related to each other in the population of is from much interest. the effort The to critical estimate a distinguishing relationship, this, one as can in

Respondents of the Study The staff nurses of St. Paul Hospital, Tuguegarao City
served as respondents of this study. Based on the records in the Nursing Service office, there are 65 Staff Nurses in the 5 units that serves to be the
respondents of the study. Table respondents. 1 shows the percentage distribution of the

Research Tool The researchers made use of a questionnaire in gathering data pertinent to the study. A letter was formulated explaining the purpose of the study accompanied with a questionnaire. The questionnaire was patterned from the study of Bauag, et al (2010). It was modified and categorized by the researchers to suit the requirements of the study. The questionnaire consists of the following parts: Part I Questionnaire for the Nurses A. Profile of the Respondents B. Perceptions of Respondents in Extending Duty Hours C. Assessment of the Respondents in the Performance of

conduct of the study. 2. A Letter of Request pertaining to the study was delivered personally to the Respondents. 3. The researchers personally floated the questionnaires to the respondents. Statistical Treatment of Data The researchers made use of the following statistical tools in order to summarize, analyze, and interpret the data that were gathered. The frequency count and percentage were used to describe the profile of the respondents. The frequency and rank distribution were used to identify the perceived effects. The assessment of the respondents was interpreted in terms of the weighted mean. The Analysis of Variance (Anova) was used to determine the significant assessment. The Chi square was used to determine the correlation that exists between the identified variables. differences that exist in the respondents

Ma. Ceres P. Sison, RN RESEARCH CRITIQUE Research Design The use of descriptive correlational method in study was appropriate since the research problem wants to identify the relationship of extended duty our and work efficiency of staff nurses. This was used with intention to know how one variable can affect one variable. Respondents of the Study The researcher 65 staff nurses as respondents of the study. However, the researcher failed to identify the sampling technique used in the study. Research Tool The researcher discussed the parts of the questionnaire which was pattern from a study and was modified by the researcher. However, the presence of the Perceived Effects of Extending Duty Hours was questionable. It is because the title did not mention any study on the perceived effects, it pointed only on the relationship of extended duty hours and work efficiency of staff nurses. Statistical Treatment of Data The statistical tools used in the study were frequency and percentage, weighted mean, analysis of variance and the chisquare. Looking in the statement of the problem, the researcher treated the data appropriately. The researcher used the frequency and percentage to describe the profile of the respondents. Then in the assessments of the respondents, the researcher was correct to choose the weighted mean to treat the data. The used of the analysis of variance to determine the significant difference was appropriate for the study. The use of chi-square in the study to find the significant relationship of extended duty hours and work efficiency is correct. However, chi-square was used to determine the significant relationship off variable contrary to what the researcher stated that chi-square is used to determine the correlation of variables.
