Assessment 1: Project

Stage One - Research

Unit of Competency: BSBADM506B Manage business document design and development

The Overview
For this unit of competency you are to demonstrate that you know how to manage business document design and development. The purpose of this assessment is to assess your ability to establish standards for the design and production of organisational documents. You are to demonstrate your ability to: Establish documentation standards

Assessment for this unit consists of a major project in three stages, based around the same business scenario. You will do this over a period of time. Your assessor will inform you when each stage is due.

Instructions
For this first stage of the project, you must establish the documentation standards for an organisation. You will base this around a business scenario which you will also use for Stages Two and Three (Assessments 2 and 3).

Scenario You work in a large company and have been asked to review and analyse the documents that your department uses and requires. For this, you need to develop a survey/questionnaire to obtain feedback from other members of your company on your departmental documents. You will be working in groups of two as members of your department. You may invent the type of business you are working for and may choose which department you are working in. Your department may be the: Marketing Department Sales Department Administration Department Human Resource Department Finance/Account Department

You may base this simulated business on one you have worked in or are familiar with if you like, or alternatively it may be one you are planning to open. Several pairs should work for Page 2 of 4

the same company so you will need to have a general discussion with other members of your class beforehand to decide on the particular business and departments they will be working in. For this assessment, you will design the questionnaire and ask another pair in your class to complete it. After your initial planning, you should divide up the work and each one should design a number of questions. You must submit the questionnaire with your names and the work you each undertook.

Tasks
1. In your group, brainstorm what should be in your survey/questionnaire. You should consider: your companys requirements for information entry, storage, output, and; quality of document design and production 2. Now you need to develop the survey/questionnaire. You will need to simulate a perceived current need and future needs of the department that you are creating the survey for. You should also include relevant questions regarding the skills of the current staff in documents creation, usage, maintaining and storage 3. In your questionnaire you should ask a targeted question that will ascertain the different kinds of documents needed by the organisation. Remember to consider the other departments who will be dealing with you. 4. In your survey you need to identify the users expectations on document standards to ensure that they will use and support the document design that will be created after the consultation. 5. Now you need to conduct your survey/questionnaire. Get other pairs of students who are working for the same business to complete the survey questions. 6. Establish the documentation standards based on your survey/questionnaire. Consider the budget (which you can decide on yourselves), resources and technology requirements.

Assessment Criteria:
You must demonstrate adequate skills and knowledge by satisfactorily completing the assessment tasks in order to achieve competency in this assessment. You must demonstrate that you:
