Abstract

As the per the university curriculum, the industrial visit is an indispensable aspect for the successful completion of the course. The aim is to introduce the students to the working environment of the industries. It also aims to relieve the students from the academic pressure experienced by them. Keeping in mind this aim, we decided to conduct a ve-day educational tour from March 1st to 6th. After a round of negotiations, the students decided to visit places like Ooty, Hoganikkal, Bangalore, etc. The tour was well organized by the tour coordinators and on the whole, every student enjoyed the trip.

Chapter 1 Introduction

March 1, 2013 was a memorable day, the day we started our ve-day study tour. 42 students, accompanied by 3 stas boarded the bus the bus left the college premises at 4:00 pm. Our rst destination was Ooty. All the way we sang, danced and together we enjoyed our journey to Ooty. We reached there early morning at around 3:00 am. Ooty cuddled us with its cold climate and we spent the rest of the morning there at a hotel. At 8:00 am we all got ready for our rst day journey. We ate our breakfast and started our trip. We rst went to Ooty lake, famous for its boating. We spent our 3 beautiful hours there and then continued our trip, this time to a tea factory in Ooty. There, we were taught about the manufacturing process of tea- it was an informative session. After our lunch, we carried on with our trip to the botanical garden in ooty. As the name suggests, the garden is well-known for its wide variety of plants and owers. We wandered in groups, posed for photos, played games and overall made a lot of fun. We spent our night in the hotel and next day made our way to Hoganikkal. We left Ooty early in the morning. The trip to Hoganikkal was really long but we never expected that it would be a nostalgic one. We sang all the way and we found many singers in our class. A surprising thing was that even our teachers

2 were good singers. Finally, we reached hoganikkal. The place is famous for its boating and of course, it was simply superb. A thrilling experience and another memorable day ended. The next day, the garden city Bangalore, was waiting for our arrival. We reached Bangalore in the midnight, had a late dinner and spent the rest of the night waiting for the city to wake up. Our morning started with a visit to the famous Cubbon park. We also visited Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum . In the afternoon we went to Lal Bagh. After that, we visited two industries- mpower global, silver lake. They took a brief class on the emerging technologies. The session was knowledgeable. The metropolitan city was famous for its shopping malls. So we boarded on the metro and shopped at MG road. Everybody was busy purchasing and after a big shopping everybody returned to the hotel . March 5- the schedule was to visit another industry: wonderla. After the visit we had a full-day fun at the water-theme amusement park. Thrilling rides excited everyone. A full-day enjoyment with lots and lots of fun-that was all about that day. March 6-was the last day of our tour. Though we were sad about the end of the trip, we were not ready to give up that days entertaining moments. Our nal destination was coorg. We reached there early in the morning, and stayed at a hotel. Our morning trip was to a Nisargadhama Forest, adventurous in a way. We enjoyed elephant ride, had some more shopping and returned to the hotel for lunch. The afternoon trip was destined to Golden temple, Tibetan temple . We were astonished by the beautiful sculptures and carvings inside the temple. The Tibetans here worshipped budha, and lead a peaceful life.

3 We returned in the evening. But no one enjoyed this return trip as the joy ended. The ve day tour ended just like ve seconds. We enjoyed a lot and above all we carried back the beautiful moments of the trip. An exciting trip that well always remember.

Chapter 2 Industries Visited

2.1

Mpower Global As a part of our syllabus we had our rst industrial visit to Mpower global,

Bangalore. We reached Mpower global at 1.30p.m.This company is situated in Lalbagh fort road. We waited on the rooftop of the company waiting for the chief training ocer. We were welcomed by the smiling face of the training ocer who took us into the conference hall of the company .There he explained to us about the company and the technologies used by the company to deliver products to their clients .There he explained that they specialized in the area of web portal development and used open source technology (more specically Liferay) in India and stands amongst the top few globally in this area. They consult, develop projects, conduct trainings, build high-end portals and provide comprehensive service to companies and clients seeking IT solutions. He also mentioned that they won the Lockheed Martin India Innovation Award for building an Auto Code Generation tool - mPire. He went on to explain about the Liferay, the main technology used by the company to build web portals. He explained why they chose to use the technology and what are its benets. He also mentioned that the number of Liferay experts were high in demand but short in supply due to the fact that the cost of training in Liferay was very high. Liferay is based on java and he described a small code

5 snippet just to give us a taste in Liferay. The company provided training for students in web development technologies along with Liferay for 6 months provided a catalogue describing the topics covered in this training period. He also mentioned that students can also take up their nal year projects from the company and they can provide support for the project. If the students performed well in the training or project they would be recruited in the company.We then left the oce and went on to our next destination.

6 2.2 SilverLake Information Systems Our next industrial visit was to SilverLake Information Systems Pvt. Ltd. Bangalore. Silver Lake is one of the IBM Business partners in India. We reached the industry at 10:00 am on 4th March,2012. We had spend 2 hours there. SilverLake Information Systems Private Ltd. Was established in 2002 with a mission to deliver consistent and eminent quality IT solution. They cater to the domains of training, Consulting, Development and outsourcing which would leverage maximum eciency and benet to meet the customer requirements. They have industry domain expertise in virtually most of the buisness sectors. Governance, Commitment and Accountability are the core values which drives the organization with its employee being its core assets. They are a synergy driven company with great belief on the articulation of its activities in sync with the Indian as well as Global clients with regards to the services they provides. Their team has rich experience and skill to built open standards based solutions for customer specic requirement. SilverLake evolved as an organization for all IBM trainings on midrange server, today, its one of the well known names among the IBM learning service providers for all the i series, z series and p series related education. SilverLake not only caters to the training needs of its clients but also has full hand experience in executing projects and consulting on various IBM platforms like i series and p series. We studied the principles of software management and how they are marketed. We understood that softwares are divided into modules and given to the workers. They present the modied modules to the group leader and leader combines these modules into a project.

7 2.3 Wonderla Holidays On 5th March we had our last industrial visit to Wonderla Holidays Pvt. Ltd. We reached there at 11am and spent upto 6pm. Wonderla Bangalore Indias favourite amusement park is located on Bangalore - Mysore road, just 28 kms away from Bangalore city. Set in 82 acres of landscaped gardens in 2005. Wonderla has 54 thrill packed rides oering a monster dose of entertainment and fun for all age groups. Wonderla Bangalore has entertained 5 million people in just 8 years. Wonderla is a vast industry in which it provides a lot of knowledge about their technologies. All the rides are working with advanced technologies. We visited the section that deals with this technologies. Each rides are controlled by separate sections. We visited each section one by one, from this we very well understood that electrical energy is converted into mechanical energy. We can never deny that all this electronic devices work on the basis of programming. This programming have been installed at the very beginning when these devices were constructed. The water rides especially wave pool, play pool etc. is well controlled in a computerized manner. We were able to understand that the root of every technology is computer and programming. This visit helped us to clear our doubts and we had really enjoyed the rest of the day in the park with full of vigour and enthusiasm.

Chapter 3 Places Visited

3.1

Ooty Journey commensed on 1st march 2013 at 4.00 pm from the college. We had

a lot of expectation of our tour and we started journey with a prayer. Our rst destination was ooty. We reached ooty at about 4.00 am. After a long journey Hotel Astoria Residency welcomed us . After a peaceful night , a pleasant morning awaited with new destination lake in ooty. The Boat house situated by the lake, which oers boating facilities to tourists, is a major tourist attraction in Ooty. It also features a garden, a mini train and an amusement park. The other notable features include a canteen run by the TTDC and pony rides in front of the boat house.

10 Our next destination was Tea factory. We spent a lot of time and eort on research, gathering and sifting information for authenticity and have also validated our version of the evolution through discussions with some of the early pioneers of tea in the Nilgiris. Of course, the information we present at the Tea Museum does not purport to be the truest and most decisive version of the evolution of tea. However it has been an honest attempt to shed light where there was none. At the Tea Museum, you will nd three broad sections of Tea History Origins of World tea, Tea history in India and nally Evolution of Tea in the Nilgiris. You will come across interesting snippets on how tea as a beverage and a trade commodity inuenced social, economic and cultural nuances across the world, and how these factors in turn, inuenced the growth of Tea. We do hope us enjoy our journey through the Tea Museum as much as we have, while compiling it! After having the delicious lunch our next destination was botanical garden. Its the best garden ever known in India and is a great tourist destination. It is located on the hillock of Ooty which is one of the most popular tourist destinations in India. It has a wide span of more than 50 acres and is spread along the Dodabetta peak, which stays to be the highest peak in the region of Ooty. The garden is taken great care of by the government and the Horticulture department and has a wide variety of plants and trees. We captured a lot of photos then played many interesting games and enjoyed a lot. As far as that we went to shopping and return back to our hotel at 8.00 pm.

12 3.2 Hoganikkal We reached Hogenakkal at 3.00pm after a long masthi journey from Ooty. We had a special Hogenakkal lunch . After a small relief from hunger we proceeded to Hogenakkal falls.

Hogenakkal(smoking rocks) Falls is a waterfall in South India on the river Kaveri. It is located in the Dharmapuri district of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu.Hogenakkal is absolutely in the border of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. During rainy Seasons the lush green ambience of Hogenakkal presents a visual feast to the tourists pouring in. The unique sight of the tall trees mounting upon the small island-like mounds clustered with giant rocks on the way and the ercely owing river pounding upon it makes even the dull hearts go awe-stricken.

13 Major attraction of hogenakkal is Boating . we enjoyed our boating in kaveri river. It is considered to form at Talakaveri in the Brahmagiri hills in the Western Ghats of south India and gathers momentum as the land drops in elevation. It becomes larger as various tributaries feed into it on the way down. At Hogenakkal, the Kaveri, now a large river, drops and creates numerous waterfalls as the water cuts through the rocky terrain.

Boating in Hogenakkal is allowed during the dry-season as the water falls are not strong enough to disrupt the passage of the boats. This is the main source of income for these boat operators. The coracles are about 2.24 m in diameter, but still can take a load of eight persons at a time. These coracles are made of bamboo, and with all materials available takes about a day to build. The bottom

14 of the boats are made waterproof by the use of hides, but sometimes with sheets of plastic. Use of plastics in the Hogenakkal vicinity, not just for boats, has been criticised due to problems with pollution. These boats are steered and propelled using a single paddle, making them unique.

All were tried as we enjoyed at our peak in water. Hogenakkal was one of the memorable location of our auspicious journey. And with more expectation we headed towards our new destiny banglore.

15 3.3 Bangalore We reached Bangalore at about 10pm. After the long and tiresome journey Hotel Deva Residency welcomed us as an oasis welcomes the desert travelers!

After a peaceful night of deep slumber , we were all very relaxed and were really looking forward to the sightseeing. Our rst destination was Cubbon Park. Cubbon Park is a landmark lung area of the Bangalore city within the heart of city in the Central Administrative Area. Originally created in 1870, when Major General Richard Sankey was the then British Chief Engineer of Mysore state, it covered an area of 100 acres and subsequent expansion has taken place and the area reported now is about 300 acres .It has a rich recorded history of abundant ora and fauna plantations coupled with numerous impressive and aesthetically located buildings and statues of famous personages, in its precincts. The walk through the lush green park was indeed relaxing and peaceful. We

were humbled by the true beauty of nature but also managed to take a large number of photos in this serene backdrop. Our next Destination was the Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum. The museum was instituted as part of the centenary celebrations of the engineer-statesman Sir M. Vishvesvaraya (1861-1962). Vishveshwaraya Museum is not a museum in its classical sense, because it has interactive exhibits unlike stationary models of a museum. It is more of a Science Centre. Each oor of this museum is dedicated to a scientic discipline. The Engine Hall exhibits engines of various automobiles, machines used in industry, a jet aircraft engine, and other mechanical devices. The predictability and precision of mechanics is demonstrated by the rolling balls that travel endlessly within metal tracks. It is delighting to watch the balls moving over roller coaster, looping a loop and bouncing high to be caught by a basket. Principle of

conservation of energy can be explained convincingly through this exhibit. The Electro Technic Gallery contains interactive electrical exhibits which work on the basic principles of electricity, electronics and communication. This gallery exhibits the classical experiments like Oersteds experiment, Barlows wheel, Faradays ring, etc. A demonstration on electrostatics, which include Tesla coil, Van de Graa generator etc. is on display. This is a must visit for all the students of electricity at basic and advanced level and all those who are attracted by the marvels of electricity. On the rst oor of the Museum we have the Fun Science gallery that displays exhibits on sciences of sound, optics, uids, math and perception. This is a real fun-lled exhibition and people throng each and every exhibit in large

numbers to operate them. Space gallery The Space Gallery is about rocket science and the history of space exploration. Biotechnology hall also on the second oor of Visvesvaraya Museum has exhibits on basics of Biotechnology and its applications. The Dinosaur alive has a moving replica of a Spinosaurus. The BEL Hall of Electronics has interesting exhibits on Electronics. Another gallery named Science for Children houses exhibits that engages children in activities that help them to enjoy science. There is a giant piano over which they can dance to play music. A pin-wall helps the children to make the impression of their body parts on it. There is a virtual game area, where children can play music using virtual instruments. An attractive mural made of colored beads welcome the visitors to

19 this gallery, which is lled with fun and enjoyment.. This is the only museum in the world other than the Smithsonian Institutions in the US, to have a full scale replica of the 1903 yer of Wright brothers. A new 3D theater using technology from LightSpeed, USA is open to the public now. Interesting lms on deep sea diving and brain are screened here.The 3d eects are just spectacular. After having the lunch at the museum we went straight to Lal Bagh.

Lal Bagh or Lal Bagh Botanical Gardensis a well known botanical garden in southern Bangalore, India. The garden was originally commissioned by Hyder Ali, the ruler of Mysore, and later nished by his son Tipu Sultan. It has a famous glass house which hosts an annual ower show. Lal Bagh houses Indias largest collection of tropical plants, has an aquarium and a lake, and is one of the main

20 tourist attractions in Bangalore. We had a chance of getting into the Bangalore metro which in itself was an spectacular experience!

After that we went straight to MG Road to full ll all our shopping ambitions though most of us were quite content with window shopping!

3.4

Coorg The long journey from Bangalore lead us to our last destination Coorg. Team

reached there at the midnight and it was freezing cold too. After the peaceful night, we were eager to celebrate our last day of 6 days long trip. Our rst destination was Nisargadhama Forest. It is an island formed by river Kaveri and is used as a picnic spot near Kushalnagar in the district of Kodagu in Karnataka. We had crossed a overhanging bridge to get there. The forest has lots of bamboo plantations and tall trees. we had strolled across the river too. There was a deer park inside where we feed them. The main attraction was the elephant ride. After an ever memorable elephant ride we were welcomed by kaveri river owing around the island. Visitors were allowed to get into water at a few shallow and safe points along the river. We spent a lot of time there by loving nature and

we had a wonderful photo sessions too. At the peak of enjoyment we had even forget our lunch. By the time 2:30 we had the delicious food and our last destination was Golden temple at Bylakuppe. The Namdroling Nyingmapa Monastery (or Thekchog Namdrol Shedrub Dargye Ling) is the largest teaching center of Nyingmapa- a lineage of Tibetan Buddhism - in the world. We spent most of the time there inside and tried to understand the history behind the temple. The amazing fact was that the monastery is a home to sangha community of over ve thousand lamas. It was a great experience for all of us.

24 Finally we went for a re camp which make the long 6 days journey an ever memorable one in our life. By 9 we had the delicious biriyani of coorg and start our journey back to kerala. It was a stunning night that we all sing together. At the early 5 am we had reached our MES college.

Chapter 4 Conclusion

As we bid goodbye to this last day we have nothing left except some memories. There were many highlights of the tour, particularly all the students settled very well to their host families daily routine and enjoyed being a member of them. The cooperation from the teachers was also appreciable. The whole program really brought us together to appreciate the true value of friendship and respect of each other. And for sure we are longing for another tour because it did give us a new experience and the bond between us grew stronger.
