Introduction Psychologists define stress as being A physical, mental or emotional response to events that cause bodily or mental tension

(source 1). Stress can have many effects on our lives it can cause disease and can affect how we feel. Stress can have psychological and physiological effects, psychological is the effect that it has on thinking and behaviour and can be things such as depression, sleep problems and lack of concentration. The physiological effects are how our body reacts to stress this can lead to heart disease, high blood pressure and reduced functioning of the immune system. There are many different causes of stress but one of the most significant is stress in the workplace. Stress in the workplace is defined as being The adverse reaction people have to excessive pressures or other types of demand placed on them at work (source 2). This is something, which has a huge impact on working life and peoples home life. It is something, which can affect anyone who has a job no matter the occupation. This study will look at how workplace stress affects people in different occupations and how salary affects levels of stress. The main causes of stress in the workplace are demands, control, support, relationships, role and change. Demands can cause stress if employees do not feel that they are able to cope with the demands from their job (source 2). Control causes stress when employees do not feel that they have any control over what happens at their place of work (source 3).Support can cause stress when employees do not feel they receive enough from their colleagues and superiors (source 4). Role causes stress when employees do not fully understand their role in the workplace and they may have conflicting roles (source 5). Changes cause stress when they are frequently being made to an organisation and the employee has not received adequate support to understand the changes (source 6). Stress in the workplace can have a very significant effect on employees and business and can have health implications. Companies invest millions of pounds a year in to research in to stress in the workplace, as it is so common and important. Companies have the responsibility to make their employees working environment as stress free as possible. Stress in its self is not a disease however; it can lead to life threatening illnesses and can have social implications. This is because stress can have both long-term and short-term effects on health, which can be quite severe. The short-term health implications can be difficulty sleeping, sexual problems, headaches, indigestion, nausea, memory loss and low self-esteem. The long-term health implications can be very severe and are things such as heart disease, high blood pressure and depression.
