Refuse and Recycling Contract to Save West Orange More Than $1 Million
August 22, 2013 West Orange, NJ Mayor Robert D. Parisi announced today that West Orange will enter into a five-year Refuse and Recycling Contract with Suburban Disposal, Inc. at a savings of more than $1 million dollars to the Township as compared to the current contract price. The new contract begins September 9, 2013. After a unanimous vote by the Township Council, Suburban Disposal, Inc. was awarded the contract based on being the lowest responsible bidder. Parisi convened a Solid Waste Advisory Committee in November, 2012, which was tasked with developing a specification in conformance with the New Jersey Uniform Bid for Solid Waste Collection and Contract Bidding Laws. As part of the new recycling contract, this is the first time all residents will be included in municipal refuse and recycling collection. Single Stream Recycling Collection will now allow residents to put all items out at the same time, which also increases the amount of items taken out of refuse waste. The company will also use a fleet of Natural Gas Trucks. The contract also continues a number of other services that the municipality currently provides its residents. Collection zones, dates and frequency will remain the same. Refuse Collection Service will occur two times a week in three zones and Bulky Trash Collection will occur once week in each zone. Recycling Collection Service single stream will occur once a week on the first refuse collection day in each zone. Litter Baskets will be collected two times weekly in each zone and four times per week in designated zones. Refrigerants, Televisions and Computer Electronics Collection will be picked up once a week on a call-in basis to the contractor. We are always searching for new ways to help improve services that affect our daily lives, Parisi said. In addition to saving the Township more than $1 million dollars over the next five years, our residents and the environment will benefit in many other ways. Not only have we made recycling more convenient for residents, we are also providing a cleaner and quieter setting for our Township while saving on the cost of disposal fees. ### Media Contact: Jessica Glicker / Public Information Officer jglicker@westorange.org / 973-325-4133
