Exercise: Mill Bearing Static Results

Objectives
After successfully completing this exercise, you will be able to:

Evaluate stress results of a roll mill bearing part for stresses.

Scenario
The model that you analyze in this exercise is a mill bearing part. Notice that the model contains a large number of suppressed features--specifically, many holes that will increase the size of the Mechanica model. Remember, it is recommended that you suppress features that are inconsequential to the analysis. Also note, the model and boundary conditions are both symmetric. mill_bearing static_results mill_bearing.prt

Task 1. Examine the existing simulation features.

1. Enable Mechanica Structure by clicking Applications > Mechanica. 2. Review the Mechanica constraints and loads.

There is a 1,000,000 N bearing load in the Y direction. There is a 500,000 N force load in the Z direction. The model is symmetrical about the YZ plane. The model has two displacement constraints: one preventing translation in the Y direction, another preventing translation in the Z direction.

Task 2. Run an analysis.

1. Click Mechanica Analyses/Studies from the Mechanica actions toolbar.

Note that a Static Analysis has already been defined. 2. Click Start Run

Click No for interactive diagnostics. to display the analysis summary window.

3. Click Display Study Status

Scroll through the report to view the progress and note: Total Elapsed Time Total CPU Time How many elements are in the model? What is the error of the solution? Measure: max_disp_mag Measure: max_stress_vm Click Close to exit the Run Status dialog box.

4. Click Close to exit the Analyses and Design Studies dialog box.

Task 3. Create results windows and view the results.

1. Click Results prompted. to start defining Mechanica results. Do not save the model if to create a result window definition.

2. Click Result Window

If mill_static is not listed in the dialog box, click Working Directory from the Common Folders list. Select mill_static in the Design Study for Result Window dialog box and click Open. Type Mill_von_Mises as the name of the window. Type von Mises Stress as the title. Ensure that the Display type is set to Fringe. Ensure that the Quantity is set to display Stress. Ensure that the units are set to MPa. Ensure that the Component is set to von Mises. Select the Display Options tab and select the Continuous Tone check box. Select the Deformed check box and set a scale of 10% if necessary. Select the Animate check box and set 16 frames if necessary. Ensure that the Auto Start check box and Repeat icon are selected. Click OK and Show to finish the definition and display the results window. to copy the existing results window.

3. Click Copy

Type Mill_Displacement as the name of the window. Type Displacement as the title. If necessary, select the Display Options tab. Select the Overlay Undeformed check box. Select the Quantity tab. Ensure that the Display type is set to Fringe. Set the Quantity to display Displacement. Ensure that the units are set to mm and that the Component is set to Magnitude. Click OK and Show to finish the definition and display the results window.

4. Click Format > Result Window. Set the background color to White. Click OK. Select the other results window and repeat this step. 5. Click Stop to stop the animation. Click Step Forwards or Step Backwards to advance the animation to frame 16, as shown in the figures. Select the other results window and repeat this step. In the stress results window, notice the "hot" spots (in yellow, orange, and red) near the symmetric boundary.

Task 4. Focus on the "hot" spots (von Mises stress higher than 100 MPa).
1. Click the Displacement window to activate it.

Click Hide Definitions

to hide the Displacement window.

2. Click the von Mises Stress window to activate it.

Click Edit Selected Definition . Select the Display Options tab if necessary. Clear the Deformed check box. Verify that the Animate check box is cleared. Click OK and Show to finish the definition and display the results window.

3. Click Info > Model Max to view the maximum von Mises Stress. 4. Click Info > Model Min to view the minimum von Mises Stress. You can use either a cutting or capping surface to view the model maximum and minimum values. 5. Click Insert > Cutting/Capping Surfs.

Set the Type to Capping Surface. Click Apply.

Click Dynamic and drag the surface as shown below. Middle-click when you have completed dragging. To drag the cutting or capping surface, click and drag the mouse normal to the surface. The surface will move opposite to the mouse. Release the left mouse button and middle-click to quit dynamic drag.

6. Click OK. 7. Click Edit > Delete Capping Surf to remove the capping surface. 8. Click Format > Legend to edit the legend so any stress above 100 MPa (N/mm2) is indicated in red.

Set the maximum value to 100. Click OK.

9. Click Info > Dynamic Query to determine the maximum stress inside the holes that are fixed from translating in the Y-direction. Click Close. If the yield stress of steel is 200 MPa and you want to maintain a safety factor of 2, no stress in the model should exceed 100 MPa. 10. Click File > Exit Results > No to close the Mechanica results window. 11. Click Save > OK to save the model.

12. Click Close Window

. and click OK to erase all models from memory.

13. Click Erase Not Displayed This completes the exercise.
