O a computer program that performs a specific function(s) for

the user O A group of applications packaged together are called a Suite

O Examples of applications:
O Google Earth application software locates and gives a

virtual picture of any place on earth O Windows Media Player application software plays songs and videos
O Examples of Suites:
O Microsoft Office is a package that bundles Word, Excel,

PowerPoint, Publisher and Access together O Adobe offers various Suites containing Photoshop, Flash, and other Designing applications

File Extensions
O Using the my computer icon or my files icon/folder,

you can view a list of files contained on your computer O Each file displays an icon, the filename, and an extension O The filename is followed by a period and then an extension

File Extensions
O You can identify a file by its extension O .doc and .docx are Microsoft Word documents O .doc represents a Word document created for

version 2003 or less O .docx represents a Word document created for version 2007 or higher

O You can identify a file by its extension O .xls and .xlsx are Microsoft Excel documents O .mdb and .accd are Microsoft Access documents O .pub and .pubx are Microsoft Publisher documents

O .ppt and .pptx are Microsoft PowerPoint

File Extensions
O You can identify a file by its extension O .psd represents an Adobe Photoshop document O .fla represents an Adobe Flash document O .avi represents an audio or video file

O .wav represents an audio file


O .mp3 represents an audio file O .wmv represents a video file

File Extensions
O Pictures, images and graphics can also be

identified by their extensions O Common graphic extensions are:


O .bmp - bitmap

O .gif Graphics Interchange Format


O .jpg or .jpeg Joint Photographic Experts Group O .tiff Tagged Image File Format O .png Portable Network Graphic

Choosing the Right Application


O Depending on the type of view in the window, you can

see the application name in the list

Choosing the Right Application


O Choose the correct application to open your file

according to its type and extension O .doc or .docx extension means that you should choose Microsoft Word to open the file. O If you choose the wrong application you will get an error message like this one:

File Manipulations
O Folders are a great way to help you

organize your files O To create a new folder:


O Navigate to the disc or drive where you save O O O

your work Click on the File option Choose New from the drop down menu Choose Folder Type in the name you want to give your folder
O Use something descriptive that will help you identify

the contents of the folder

File Manipulations
O You can create as many folders as you

need O You could create a folder named Word Processing then save all your letters and reports in this folder O You could create folders named for each of the classes you are taking this year O There are many different ways to organize folders and files
O

Use the method according to your instructors directions

File Manipulations
O To create a copy of an

existing file:
O Right-click on the filename O On the drop down menu that appears,

choose Copy O Right-click in a blank area of the screen O On the drop down menu that appears, choose Paste

O You will see the original file and the

copied file
O The copied file will have the word copy

in the filename

File Manipulations
O To rename an existing file:
O Right-click on the filename O On the drop down menu that appears, choose Rename O The filename will then be highlighted just start typing the new name O Be sure to leave the extension and the period in front of it O Strike the enter key when finished

File Manipulations
O To delete an existing file or folder:
O Right-click on the filename or folder name O On the drop down menu that appears, choose Delete O You will get a delete file message asking if you are sure you want to

permanently delete this file. O Click YES to delete the file.
