CHEMICAL REACTION ENGINEERING (TCH607) CT-III (Session 2012-13) rd B.

Tech 3 Year 6th Semester (Biochemical Engineering) Time: 2hrs Max. Marks: 60 1. Attempt any four of the following: (5x4=20) (a) Differentiate between mean residence time and space time. (b) An aqueous feed containing A (1 mol/lit) enters a 2 lit plug flow reactor and react away (2AR, -rA = 0.05 CA2 mol/lit.s). Find the outlet concentration of A for a feed rate of 0.5 lit/min. (c) If a second order reaction kinetics is given, what type of reactor (MFR /PFR) you will prefer and why? (d) In the case of substrate inhibition what type of reactor should be used ? (e) Describe the terms cycle time and carrier life. 2. Attempt any two of the following: (10x2=20) (a) Describe the terms porosity and void volume. How will you determine the total surface area of a porous particle? (b) For a first order gas phase reaction (AR) in a mixed flow reactor, the volume of reactor is 30 lit for 80% conversion of pure A. if the reaction stoichiometry is (A 2R) find the required volume of MFR for same conversion. (c) What is pore diffusion phenomenon? Find out the effectiveness factor for a single pore assuming first order reaction kinetics. 3. Attempt any two of the following: (10x2=20) (a) What are various strategies used for enzymatic reactor operation? (b) Develop an expression between substrate concentration and rate of reaction for enzymic reactions. Describe the performance of PFR for enzyme catalysed reaction. (c) What is damkohler number? Describe its effect on overall rate of reaction.
