(Chpt. 5) The Surf Zone --Character of surf zone is dependent on height type, angle, and period of the breakers-->other things that can make an impact is multiple wave fields, surf beat, sandbars, beach slope, tide, refraction, and littoral currents --Surf: mixed waves; 2 types ~cause by local wind waves: shore irregular crest and spilling breaker;wave period short (5 to6 sec);continental coasts outside tropics and all confined waters ~cause by swell from a distant wind area: regular crests, plunging breakers and long line of form (period 8-15 sec);western continenetal shores ; typhoon may cause surf caused by swell on coast of china --Effect of Surf Beat on Landing Craft: long wave oscillation of the mean water level within the surf zone; proportional to breaker height --Sandbars: wherever bars are present the wave crest will peak up as the waves roll over the bar. --Beach Slope: importance of beach slope to surf lies in its effect on the width of the surf zone. --Tide: no effect on height of the breakers but effect on width and character of surf zone. This is the case on beaches with bars and steep upper slope.

--Refraction: breakers nearly parallel the beach even when the offshore waves travel at a considerable angle with the coast line; also can occur if waves travel over an irregular bottom. Heavy surf is found wherever a submarine ridge runs out from a coast (sub canyon had opp effect).
