I am pleased to present to you medical student _________________________________ who is in the first /second year of medical education. This student is required to do 40 hours of community service in an organization involved in delivering service to individuals or the community in general. These include agencies such as social services, health care, education or religious-based outreach organizations. The student has selected your organization as an ideal place to fulfil this requirement. This assignment should provide an opportunity for the student to observe organization structure, organization communication, customer service and an opportunity to observe or participate in your core business. These hours should preferably be done over a period of consecutive days but can be flexible depending on your time and what is mutually convenient between you and the student. Please see attached a form for tracking the student. Thank you for your generosity. Yours truly,

MB BS Programme UWI, Mona SPECIAL STUDY MODULE Community Service Guidelines for Students The Special Study Module is a part of your medical training designed to foster self directed learning around a topic which complements the material offered in the core curriculum. This period of community service will provide you with exposure to an organization involved with caring for individuals. It gives you a chance to see close up how that agency operates and to experience aspects of communication, organization and the delivery of service. The practice of medicine is about caring for others as individuals and/or within a community context. Through this exercise, it is hoped that you will begin to reflect on and analyze your own role as a future care-giver. This process will continue throughout medical school and indeed as you continue with your career. Any organization which allows you to achieve the above can be selected and approached to allow you the opportunity to gain this experience. This may range from a school, social work agency, community-based organization, religious outreach, health service agency or other suitable place. ALTERNATIVELY, students can opt to engage in (i) research projects, (ii) clinical preceptorships, (iii) customised medicine-related programmes; however these should be clearly described and approval sought prior to commencement (e.g. projects organised by SCORA and related committees). In addition you are to write a one page reflective essay (preferably typed and minimum of 600 words) on your experience, highlighting the impact the experience had on you as a future physician. Please print and then complete the missing parts of the letter of introduction to your agency of choice. This includes the date, name and address of the organisation and your name. Just fill in the gaps. The rest of the letter should NOT be adjusted. Please note that at the end of the exercise you are to hand in the tracking sheet, along with the signed agreement of your activity supervisor. All of this together with your reflective essay will be collected on your return to school in September.
