Najib to BN: Stick together
in good and bad times

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Ab-
dul Razak wants all Barisan Nasional (BN) component
parties to stop being only “fair-weather” friends and
start working in unison at all times
to strengthen the coalition.
“We need component parties (or
friends) to stick together in good
and rough times. Stop indulging in
internal bickering and politicking,”
he told more than 4,000 delegates
to the 56th People’s Progressive
Party (PPP) general assembly in
PWTC yesterday.
Najib said BN parties, no mat-
ter big or small, must realise the
common objective of working for
the people instead of being “overly
obsessed with internal politics”.
“It is important that we learn
from the 12th general election re-
sults and start working together,”
he said.
“As for the PPP, its members
too have a role to play in BN. It
is important to stop all internal
bickering and start working
harder for better results,” he
added.

KUALA LUMPUR: The bodies of a
couple, dead for at least two days,
were found with slash wounds
yesterday at a unit of the Idaman-
Sutera Apartments in Medan Ida-
man, Setapak in what is believed to
be a case of murder-cum-suicide.

scams: Commission

PETALING JAYA: Investors should be
wary of schemes promising extraor-
dinarily high returns within a short
period as investment scams are on
the rise, warned the Securities Com-
mission (SC).
In a statement yesterday, the
SC issued the alert that investment
scams were being marketed to the
public, disguised as various types of
business or investment opportunities
that might involve investing in differ-
ent types of products.
It stated that any issuance of
securities requires the SC’s approval
under section 212 of the Capital Mar-
kets and Services Act 2007, including
the issuance of shares by a public
company or unit trust products or
bonds.
It said any distribution or sales
of such securities would require a
prospectus that is registered with
the SC so that the prospectus can be
issued to investors to provide them

Delay subsidy
withdrawal: Union
KUALA LUMPUR: The National
Union of Bank Employees yester-
day called on the government to
delay the withdrawal of subsidies
for sugar, bread and flour until after
the economy improves.
Its general secretary, J. Solomon,
said the government should use part
of the RM10 billion stimulus pack-
age to provide for the subsidies.
He told Bernama that the mid-
dle and lower income group in Ma-
laysia are struggling to make ends
meet and that they re surviving on
borrowed income.
Even borrowing, he said, was
not easy for the individuals as they
had to overcome so many red tape
and credit verifications.
“Such hurdles drive an indi-
vidual straight into the arms of
loansharks,” he said.

a sound basis to justify the promised
returns and that the regulatory ap-
proval has been obtained.
The statement said regulated
activities such as dealing in securities,
investment advice or fund manage-
ment related to securities must
be licensed by the SC and a list of
licensed persons is available on www.

Thai PM visits
Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR: Thai Prime
Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva will
make his first official visit to
Malaysia today since assuming
the post on Dec 17 last year.
Wisma Putra said in a
statement yesterday Abhisit
will be accompanied by his
deputy Suthep Thaugsuban,
Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya
and senior Thai government
officials.
During his one-day visit,
Abhisit is scheduled to meet with
his Malaysian counterpart Datuk
Seri Najib Abdul Razak to discuss
issues of mutual interest and on
enhancing bilateral relations and
cooperation between the two
countries.
The statement said Abhisit
is also scheduled to have an
audience with the Yang di-
