Puppy Mill Rescue Reunion held at ISHAS

BY JASMINE CUPP On Sunday, Aug. 19, the Island Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary held a Puppy Mill Rescue Reunion. The event was held from 2-4 p.m. at the Island Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary located at 3620 E. State Road in Port Clinton. In attendance were Ottawa County Sheriff Steve Levorchick, Ottawa County Dog Warden Jo Lynn Hetrick and Professional Dog Trainer Chuck Stella from Elite K911. Levorchick, a parent to two rescued dogs himself, said the event was a great opportunity to bring the dogs together again and to bring awareness to the sanctuary and its monetary needs. Owner and operator Nancy BeneventoBrown was happy to see all the rescue dogs again. She said, Its worth everything in the world to see the dogs safe and happy. When talking with Nancy it is easy to see her passion and love for what she does and for the dogs that she rescues. Sundays event was especially for a rescue that involved 89 dogs rescued from one puppy mill. When the dogs were rescued they were so filthy that Nancy and the other rescuers didnt know what breed the dogs were. It took five vehicles to get the dogs from the puppy mill to Island Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary where the dogs began their new, safe lives. All of the dogs from that rescue were adopted but the five that are still at the sanctuary waiting to find their forever home. The Island Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary is a non-profit 501 C3 organization that is funded on donations. The organization is currently in need of monetary donations, supplies, and people to donate time. Volunteers are always needed to walk and play with the dogs. The Sanctuary also has a wish list of items that they need that includes cleaning supplies, office supplies and cat and dog items. To contact Island Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary, call 419-960-7487 or visit www. wix.com/islandshas. The sanctuary can also be reached by email at islandshas@aol.com. To make a monetary donation send checks to Island Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary, 2337 S. Linda Drive, Marblehead, OH 43440. More photos at www.thebeacon.net.

Motion passed to discuss development with Washington Properties

BY JASMINE CUPP At Tuesday evenings meeting of Port Clinton City Council, a motion was passed to have the mayor enter into negotiations with Washington Properties. As was the case at Thursday evenings presentation at the Elks by Mike Rose and David Krebs, there was a lively discussion amongst Council members and with members of the public. When it came to a vote on the motion, three Council members voted for and three voted against. The tie was broken by a yes vote from Council President Linda Hartlaub. As the discussion on the Washington Properties proposal began, Council was given an adjusted layout plan that Krebs provided, reflecting changes on street names and spacing adjustments, along with a statement from Krebs that he was excited to continue with plans for the waterfront. With news of the adjusted plan Councilman Mark Coppeler said that it was good to see that the drawing was amended and that he was excited to take the plan to the citizens of his ward to see what they think. Councilwoman Benko suggested that there be a special meeting on the proposal since there was an amended plan. President of Council Linda Hartlaub asked the Council if anyone had planned any comments about the subject for the meeting. Councilman Mike Snider answered, My thoughts in one word: opportunity. We need to utilize our assets to provide a positive outlook. It is my honor to make a final motion to urge the mayor to take the step to go into talks with Washington Properties at the earliest opportunity. Councilwoman Nicole DeFreitas seconded the motion. Councilwoman Debbie Benko expressed concern that Washington Properties did not have an estimate of the number of condos nor the capacity of the banquet hall. She also said that she and Coppeler had gone door to door surveying voters about the proposal. Those surveyed said a long term lease should be discussed, that they were not in favor of selling the property. Those polled were divided 54% against and 46% for proposal presented at the Elks on Thursday. Most of those opposed said it was because of lack of information and because the plan was condo-based. Benko said, A majority of the people we talked to oppose the Washington Properties proposal, but many are for a development. I propose a compromise. The land must be leased and Mr. Rose must provide a proposal by September 15 and then we go forwardI will vote against going into talks with Washington Properties right now. I am in favor of prolonging the matter to get more information. DeFreitas said that she appreciated the efforts of the surveyors but questioned the reliability to door to door surveys. I have received overwhelming emails in favor of the proposal. From interacting with people, reading emails and over Facebook I would say 95% of the people are in favor of the proposal. Councilwoman Kathy Mehl said, I also surveyed my ward. There is a mix of socio economic people. I talked to people not only in Port Clinton but the surrounding areas. No one wants the city to sell the property, no one wants the development to go outside the 14 acres. People love the idea of fixing up the downtown and the condos really arent in favor. People are sad about building on the waterfront but we do have the city beach and Lakeview Park. Councilman Ron Aukerman said that he loves parks, that he came from inner city Cleveland and used to travel across the city to enjoy the park, but that when he came here, Waterworks Park was a parking lot. The Jet moved and it became a gravel parking lot. Weve all been waiting for someone to come up with something better. We cannot pass up an opportunity to change Port Clinton for the citizens. After all the Council members got to speak President Hartlaub opened the floor to comments from residents. The first asked to speak were Margaret Phillips and Gabe Below, who are both soon to take seats on Council. Phillips: I am against condos and I am against selling the land. I think a special meeting needs to be held to voice what the people believe. Should we negotiate when we dont know what were negotiating about? The proposal needs more green space. A lodge? Yes. Buildings completely wrapped around the waterfront? No. Below: The wording used in surveys can affect the results of the survey. If your first question is do you support the city selling Waterworks Park? the surveyor is setting the tone upfront. Individuals know what answer the surveyor is looking for and it colors the rest of the discussion. Mrs. Tammy Coppeler: It is easier for people to speak on their own front porch instead of being in front of 300 people. We need a better survey, not in front of so many people. Roger Smith: Council shouldnt move in such a hurry. More discussion is needed. Alva Cortez: I am not in favor. Go out and talk to people. Jim Weaver: This proposal is a joke. I am a contractor and its not to scale whatsoever. John Coppeler: We have many condo developments already and with these we dont have year round business. The condos are not the right answer; the fishing lodge isnt the right answer. I want to see Port Clinton develop and grow and provide for families. Brooke Kilmer-Araguz: We should get a team together about concerns and meet with Rose to negotiate. I dont want my kids to be 18 before this is developed. Rose isnt set in stone; he is waiting to develop a solid plan until he knows to move forward. This plan would be enhancing the park. Linda Green: There could be other options; maybe we could raise the money. Pat Heise: There are a select few that buck this every time. Do something before I am dead so I can see whats going on. Don Finke: I worked for the park system. The proposal is not a park; its a green space only there so they can develop it later. After the citizens at the meeting voiced their opinions, President Hartlaub brought Sniders motion to a vote. Mike Snider, Nicole DeFrietas and Ron Aukerman voted yes. Kathy Mehl, Debra Benko and Mark Coppeler voted no. Hartlaub voted yes. Therefore, the next step is for the Mayor to enter discussions with Washington Properties.

Tell Tales

Gem Beach, Warbirds and Tall Ships, oh my!

I would like to echo the sentiments expressed by Kathy Jo Schweitzer in her Sound Off letter of last week. For one week, could all of Port Clintons residents take down their signs regarding Waterworks Park? It is just for 5 days, Aug. 29 through Sept. 2. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that we will be entertaining literally thousands of visitors who will be coming to see the Tall Ships docked at Waterworks Park. They will be coming through Port Clinton from the Sutton Center parking lot mainly, therefore what they need to see is all of the beautiful homes along Perry Street without cluttering up the view with political signs.

The second of three big weekends has arrived at Carl Keller Field otherwise known as the Erie-Ottawa Regional Airport. Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. you can witness some of the most incredible electronically controlled airplanes flying over the airfield. The event is titled Warbirds Over Port Clinton with many of the model airplanes having been modeled after the great airplanes of World War I and II as well as neweryes, even jets! Admission is $7, with kids 14 and under and WWII vets getting in for free. Your admission will also gain you access to the Liberty Aviation Museum. Of Course,

next weekend, the traveling museum for the Tuskegee Airmen will be at the airport from Thursday through Sunday, Aug. 29Sept. 1.

Having just read the review of the Waterworks Park/downtown Port Clinton proposal, all I can say is lets get started. Having been coming to the area for 60 years and being a property owner for 30 years, I have watched the decline of a thriving community and so many local residents fight attempts to reinvent the area and bring new jobs and businesses here. All I can imagine is that those fighting this all have secure employment and dont mind that most young people have to leave their hometown to find employment. This proposal seems to be a good

Port Clinton lighthouse

The talk around PC these past few weeks has been the proposed development in Water Works Park. Two weeks ago Mike Rose and his

team presented their concept for revitalizing the city at a packed public meeting at the Elks Lodge. Significantly, their presentation included mention of the Port Clinton Lighthouse. The Port Clinton Lighthouse Conservancy was pleased to see the lighthouse included in the development concept because it indicates broad public support for our efforts. However, a few words of explanation and clarification are perhaps needed to clear up any misunderstanding created by the inclusion of a lighthouse/viewing platform in the concept drawing.

Captured the Mississippi

OTTAWA OUTDOORS

Thursday, August 22, 2013 5A

BY MADELYN HILLE Why hello Gulf of Mexico... Weve been waiting a long time to see you and we are finally here! 70 days ago (exactly!) Adam and I put in at the headwaters of the Mississippi in Minnesota with our canoe, and our journey has finally come to a close. Three days ago we decided to trade the ocean liners for alligators and unexpectedly fulfill one of my life long dreams: to float down the Atchafalaya River, something Ive wanted to do ever since seeing the PBS documentary Atchafalaya Houseboat when I was 18,

to finish our journey. So here we are, in Morgan City, LA at the Gulf and heading to New Orleans for our final celebration soon! Thank you all so much for the support along the way! This has been the most difficult yet most amazing experience of my life and I cant believe its over! Heres to the next 2,300 miles. Editors note: Madelyn Hille, 23, from Elmore, a Woodmore graduate, just canoed the length of the Mississippi River with her partner Adam Hoffmeister, 25. Farm tire recycling collection

The agricultural community will once again have an opportunity to recycle their unwanted farm tires through a collection sponsored by the Ottawa, Sandusky, Seneca Joint Solid Waste District. The event will be held at the Sandusky County Fairgrounds in Fremont in the north parking lot. This collection is open to farm owners, operators and residents in the three county area (including Bellevue and Fostoria residents). No dealers or agri-business will be permitted. Pre-registration is required to participate. Registration will begin Monday, Aug. 12 at 8 a.m. and will end Friday, Aug. 23 at 4:30 p.m. Prior to calling, know the number of tires by type/size that you would like to recycle. When the office is contacted, a representative from the District will provide you with a time for delivering your tires and confirm the cost based on the quantity and diameter / height of tires being recycled. It is important that all participants bring proof of residency (drivers license) to the collection site. This will verify your registration and speed the process of generating a receipt for your records. Pre-register by calling the Districts main office at 419-334-7222 or toll free at 1-888-850-7224. Tires up to 36 including implement tires, wagon tires, skid loader tires, most front tires and 4-wheeler tires will be accepted at a cost of $1.00 per tire. The District will accept farm tires 37 to 60 (most rear tractor & semi tires) at $10.00 per tire. Farm tires 61 and larger including large rear tractor tires and all combine tires (regardless of diameter) will also be accepted at $15 per tire. Tires can be recycled and used to make tire rings used as construction barrel weights or to hold down plastic covers or tarps. Recycled tires can also become crumb rubber, a material used in artificial turf on athletic fields. Additional finished products from tires include asphalt rubber used in road surfaces, tire turf used to make playground surfacing, rubber rock (an aggregate alternative) and tire derived fuel (a source of energy used in power plants). For general recycling information, District recycling collections or sponsored events log onto the OSS Solid Waste Districts website at www.recycleoss.org. For more information call the Districts main office at 419-3347222 or toll-free at 1-888-850-7224.

SOUND OFF from 2A

The Conservancy was not consulted on this location. Had we been consulted we would have made it clear that this would not be an acceptable location, for a number of reasons, not least of which this location on the river is inconsistent historically. The lighthouse was positioned so as to guide vessels coming into the harbor. For this reason, in our discussions with the office responsible for historic marker designations, weve been told a location other than on the lakefront would likely not garner approval for historic designation status. We have made this clear in our talks with the city administration. We continue to urge city leaders to approve placement of the lighthouse north of Derby Pond. As is clear from the most recent concept drawing for the development presented by Mayor Leone at the last council meeting, that location is outside the 14 acre development area. Consequently there is no longer any impediment to locating the lighthouse north of the Derby Pond. In the coming days we hope to meet with the city to jump start this process. We are hopeful the city will engage with us and agree on a location so that we can get the lighthouse on the waterfront by next summer. There is no doubt it will attract visitors to the city. In September the U.S. Lighthouse Society will be bringing a tour group of 42 here to see the lighthouse at Brands Marina, as part of a tour of northern Ohio lighthouses. Despite the fact that it is on private property and under renovation, this group was so eager to see the lighthouse that they appealed to Mr. Brand to include it in their tour. I think this says something about the appeal of this lighthouse, and lighthouses in general. Now that it has been clarified that the development will not extend any further east than Washington Street, lets proceed with placement of the lighthouse in the non-development area with a target of next spring, so that it can begin to attract visitors to the city. Respectfully, Port Clinton Lighthouse Conservancy Members: Darrell Brand, Rev. Robert Butcher, Doug Garrett, Joan Hickman, Debbie Hymore-Tester, Kyle Johannsen, Bill Moon, Commander Jerry Nauert, Rich Norgard, Dr. John Smothers,Alex Thomas Betty Voisard, Vickie Kozak, Sierra Puckett, Darlene Novak, Karen Dalenburg, and greeter Jean Dewey worked much longer than they danced. Special thanks to Commander Bob Peroni, to members Roxy and Chris, Wanda and Bill Marzetti, Terry Rahner, Dave Groene, Frank Zalar, Tracey and Tom Johns, Terry and Mary Glovinsky, Bob Sobolewski, Duane Goebel, Wally Matthews, Past Commander Dan and Mary Ann Monak for their support. Special thank you to Frank Moravcik, Brian Papesh, John Antoniak, and to lovely Linda Hoschvar playing the button box. Your music, the music we grew up loving, is deeply appreciated and your talents are a true blessing in your lives. Thank you to all who came for the music, food and fun; and your helpful monetary gifts. So many women have suffered from the Pink cancer, including this writer. The VFW Ladies Auxiliary Cancer Program has truly been helpful, I know. Help is also on a summer Saturday afternoon in August. God love Frank, Linda, Brian, John and all who were there at our Post on August 11, to help us continue our fight for the cure. Thank you. Mary Ann Monak the Port Clinton City School System. As a retiree, I have the background and the time to devote to the important decisions now facing the citizens. Sincerely, Margaret Phillips, Port Clinton

Terra State announces new Jazz Band director

A new season is beginning for the Terra State Community College Jazz Band with exciting changes in store for area student and community musicians. Local music director and instructor Jeff Blanchard is handing off the baton to the bands newest addition, regional musician and educator Kris Burt. A long time educator, Burt has led band and music programs at area schools in the Huron, Sandusky, Bellevue and Norwalk communities. He received his undergraduate degree in music education at VanderCook College of Music in Chicago and completed additional studies at Bowling Green State University. As a budding musician, he found his love for jazz in the greater Chicago area. Burt has created jazz programs in area schools including Huron City Schools, Sandusky Central Catholic and South Central Schools in Greenwich. He has enjoyed writing custom arrangements for these groups over the years. Sometimes one just cant find the perfect chart, so out comes the manuscript paper, he said. During this time, Burt has also been very fortunate to keep a busy schedule playing with several regional jazz combos, in professional and community mu-

The Terra State Jazz Band will hold an open house during their first rehearsal on Thursday, Sept. 5, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. All area musicians, students and the public are welcome to come to Terra States Recital Hall, Building D, Room D122 and check out the band and the colleges music facilities. Bring your instrument and join in playing popular big band charts. No experience necessary. Or enjoy listening to the sounds of the band while comfortably sitting in Terra States new state-ofthe-art performance hall. The P.O.R.T.S. Committee (People Organizing the Return of the Tall Ships) announces events for Port Clintons Battle of Lake Erie Bicentennial, marking the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Lake Erie and the gallant victory won by Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry of the American Navy. In September of 1813, during the War of 1812, Commodore Perry and his crew of 557 patriots prevailed over the British fleet in an epic battle near Put-in-Bay. Two hundred years later, we come together to celebrate Perrys victory, our nations sovereignty and the enduring peace between nations. This will be one of the largest celebrations in the history of Lake Erie and the Western Basin. Port Clinton will be hosting two Tall Ships, the Pathfinder and Playfair. The public will have the rare opportunity to view or board these ships for three days, along with reenactors, storytellers, cannon demonstrations, vendors at the Waterworks Park, as well as performances by the Ohio State Marching Band and, just confirmed, a performance by the United States Navy Band. All the festivities will take place in conjunction with the popular Knight of Columbus Peach, Perch, Polka and Pierogi Festival in downtown Port Clinton.

Captain Juls Fishing Report

Cooler temperatures are a blessing for anglers

As we all know, weather plays a big role in fishing. This summer has been up and down in the temperature division, and weve had more rain this season than we have the past couple of seasons. While it might not be desirable for those that like to sit by the pool and tan in their bikinis, the good news is its been a blessing for the walleye angler. After all this rain, the cooler than normal temperatures have kept the algae bloom down, and the fishing is still productive for walleye and perch. Hot temperatures after a big run off would have turned the Western Basin into a bowl of pea soup, like we have all experienced in previous years. Yuck! But, thankfully, the cool nights and cooler days have kept the bloom like that from happening. While there are still areas that show some algae, its nothing like weve seen in the past. As for the fishing, the cooler temps have helped keep a lot of the big fish from moving too far east this season. Many charters are still reporting great catches on this side of the lake, with many of those fish being Fish Ohios (walleye that are 28 or better). There are also reports coming in that show the fish are moving closer to shore and in shallower water. As I have mentioned before, walleye do not like hot water and will seek out a comfortable temperature near the 70 degree mark. When the Western Basin is too warm, the big fish move east to deeper water. The fishing out in front of Cleveland, Geneva, and Ashtabula has been phenomenal this summer, but unlike previous years, the Western Basin has had its share of success too. I cant remember the last time a specific area or two held big fish for as long as it did this summer. For months the charter boats were working an area east of Pelee Island and the weather buoy with much success. With the cooler days and nights, the walleye have been moving shallower and closer to shore in areas in and around Huron to Vermilion. To the west, from Davis Bessie to the intake, has been producing smaller fish, but in good numbers too. So, if you dont want to make long runs, dont hesitate to start looking shallower right now. Captain Juls can be contacted by email at rngrgal@gmail. com, or by phone at 419-835-7347. Her website address is www.julswalleyefishingadventures.com.

Ferguson and Fenton glass join creative forces

Two names that are synonymous with American made glass have joined forces to create an exclusive Marblehead Lighthouse bead. The artists at the Fenton Glass Company, which has been in business for over 108 years, will hand paint the lighthouse on each bead and fire it into the surface of the glass. The lighthouse design, which was created by Cary Fergusons cut glass, will be available exclusively at the Ferguson Gallery near Marblehead. Fenton representative Karen Ostin will be at the Gallery Aug. 24 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to talk about the bead and to show hundreds of other beads created by the Fenton artisans. Ferguson, who has been in business At left: Cary Ferguson with one of his Marblehead Lighthouse paintings for over 34 years, is excited about the Ferguson-Fenton union and has his signature engraved on each bead. This is a first for the Gallery. They hope to do other local themes in the near future. The Ferguson Gallery has four showrooms filled with art glass, oil paintings by Ferguson and other regional artists, nautical dcor and jewelry, along with glass blowing demonstrations. Recently a nautical antique room has been added to the Gallery. Also new and exclusive to the Gallery are three American jewelry artists: Patricia Locke, Michale Vincent Michaud and Marjorie Baier. Ferguson Gallery is at 5890 E. Harbor Rd., Marblehead. For more information, call 419.734.0600.

Halupki Festival 2013

Holy Assumption Orthodox Church in Marblehead on Sunday held the annual Halupki Festival, a celebration of Carpatho-Russian foods and culture. The festival at the oldest Orthodox church in Ohio featured not only halupki (cabbage rolls) and other foods such as pierogi and poppy seed rolls, but also day-long polka music and the art of pysanky, intricately decorated Ukranian Easter eggs. Pysanky are believed to contain great powers. There is a belief that as long as egg decorating continues, the world will exist, and that when there are many pysanky, love conquers evil. Gem Beach Rocks again

BY DONNA LUEKE Saturdays Gem Beach Rocks VI was a grand beach party on the shores of Lake Erie, honoring the tradition of decades of music and dancing on Catawba. The daylong festival of classic rock n roll music was celebrated by those dancing on the sand and grass, those listening and luxuriating on lawn chairs in the sun, those on the beach and on boats anchored offshore. The bands were Wally and the Beavs, The Reese Daily Band, THe jUNK and Ronnie Howard with Cruisin. The emcees were Judge Kathleen Giesler and John Schaffner. Over $36,000 was raised on Saturday by Gem Beach Rocks VI for United Way in Ottawa County. Karen Mathison, President and CEO of United Way of Greater Toledo, thanked those in attendance and all those who contribute to the important projects of United Way in Ottawa County. Every dollar raised by Gem Beach Rocks VI stays in Ottawa County for programs in education, income and health. Chris Galvin, Area Director of United Way in Ottawa County, said, Gem Beach rocks because Gem Beach Marina is so generous with the space; because the sponsors and volunteers are so supportive year after year; because the food and bands are the best and because of the people who have a good time. SPECIAL FIRING NOTICE 2013

Ex Libris and Jills Bakery featured at Marblehead Bank

The Marblehead Bank is featuring Ex Libris and Jills Bakery with displays in the lobby of their branch office located on Bridge Road during regular business hours. Ex Libris will have a display Aug. 19-30 and Jills will have a display on Aug. 23-30. The Marblehead Bank has established this marketing program to provide the opportunity for area businesses to positively promote their business.

Jills Bakery
Jills Bakery has become a cornerstone in the village of Marblehead. For the past 15 years, Jill Shrock has been coming in to work when most people are heading to bed. At 10 p.m. nightly, Jill comes to the bakery, turns on the ovens and starts preparing and baking her delectable treats, and she does this all by herself. Promptly at 5:30 a.m., she unlocks the doors and by 11:30 a.m., the shelves are bare. On any given morning you will see tourists and townspeople alike gathered at tables, drinking coffee and enjoying their favorite morning treat. Others leave with boxes or bags to take to work and share with co-workers or to take home and enjoy with their families. Although doughnuts are very popular (and delicious), Jills Ladylocks and nutrolls are her specialty. Always in demand, especially around the holidays, the orders are endless. On top of that, add in cookies and coffee cakes, you are sure to find something you like. On August 23rd and 30th, be sure to stop by the branch office of The Marblehead Bank on Bridge Rd. for a taste of Jills Bakery. The next time you are in Marblehead, stop by Jills and pick up a treat. Just remember to get there early because the bakery cases empty quickly. Area business owners may contact Marblehead Banks Lori Fletcher or Sherila Carr at the Peninsula branch at 419-732-6263 for further details of their business feature program and to reserve a time slot for their display. There is no charge to the business for this marketing opportunity.
