New Shear Bond Strength Methodology for Adhesion Testing

Silva LH*, Bergoli CD, Borges ALS, Tango RN, Cesar PF Biomateriais e Biologia Oral - Faculdade De Odontologia - FOUSP. Tel.: 45578584. E-mail: cdhian@gmail.com Shear bond strength tests (SBST) are heavily criticized due to inhomogeneous stress distribution (SD) that invalidate the final result. The objective was to compare the bond strength (BS) obtained by a new SBST with the conventional SBST to verify, also using Finite Element Analysis (FEA), if changing specimen geometry causes more homogeneous SD. A resin composite (Z250) was bonded to yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (YTZP) using a resin cement (Relyx). Each new SBST specimen was formed by two bonded blocks with a notch at the thinner side (adhesive surface). Adhesive surfaces had their roughness standardized and verified under perfilometry (Kruskal-Wallis; =0.05). New SBST used a customized specimen holder and the conventional SBST used an orthodontic wire. FEA was used to assess stress distribution. Elastic constants were obtained by sonic resonance to feed the FEA. Data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukeys test (=0.05), and failure modes were determined. Mean BS for both tests (conventional: 15.49.0 MPa; new: 11.73.0 MPa) were not significantly different (p=0.409). FEA showed more homogeneous SD at adhesion surfaces of both substrates for the new SBST and, most importantly, no bending stresses were noted. Failure types for both tests were mostly cohesive in the cement. However, two samples of the new SBST showed fractures evolving to cohesive failures of the resin composite. The results indicated that the new SBTS is promising for BS evaluation, since it showed similar BS and better SD compared to the conventional test. Further improvements to the new SBTS are necessary to overcome the occurrence of cohesive failure. (Apoio: FAPs - FAPESP. N 2012/10955-5)

The results indicated that the new SBTS is promising for BS evaluation, since it showed similar BS and better SD compared to the conventional test. Further improvements to the new SBTS are necessary to overcome the occurrence of cohesive failure.
