August22,2013 RobertCoombe,Chancellor GreggKvistad,Provost UniversityofDenver 2199S.UniversityBlvd. Denver,CO80208 DearChancellorCoombeandProvostKvistad: We,theundersigned,representmorethan200UniversityofDenver(DU)studentsandalumni whodemandthatyoutakeactioninresponsetothepaydiscriminationchargerecentlyfiledwith theEqualEmploymentOpportunityCommissionbySturmCollegeofLaw(LawSchool) ProfessorLucyMarsh.WEaresupportedbyover1,500additionalsignerstoapetitioninsupport ofequalpayforallattheUniversityofDenver. AsarespectedColoradoinstitutionthatdescribesitselfasaprivateuniversitydedicatedtothe publicgood,webelievethatDUshouldpracticefairness,especiallyinthetreatmentofitsown employees.

Wewantourschoolandalmamatertostandupforitsmission.Weareconcernedwearenow associatedwithaUniversitythatcannot,orwillnot,ensurethatitsfemalefacultymembers receiveequalpayforequalwork.WeneedtoknowthattheprinciplesDUclaimstostandfor includefairtreatmentforall. OurconcernsaboutwagediscriminationatDUarenotjustaboutoneprofessor.TheUniversity hastheresponsibilitytoensurethatallfacultymembersandemployeesattheLawSchoolare compensatedequitably.Inthisregard,wearedisturbedthateventhoughtheLawSchoolis awarethatfemalelawfullprofessors,includingProfessorMarsh,arepaidlessthantheirmale counterparts,ithasnotcorrectedthisinequity.Andwewereespeciallydismayedtoseethatin aDecember2012memorandumonfacultypay,theLawSchooladmittedthatrecentfaculty raiseswereimplementedwithoutregardtotryingtocorrectpotentialinequities.Thisis unacceptable. WebelieveDUmusttakeactioninresponsetoProfessorMarshscharge.TheUniversitymust evaluateitspaypracticestoidentifygenderbasedwagedisparitiessystemwide,andeliminate theinstitutionalbarriersandpracticesthatcontributetothemwherevertheyexist.WeaskDU provideaplanforhowitintendstorespondtowagediscriminationassoonaspossible.
