This cheerful cap has the look of complicated colorwork but uses only two yarns. Erda
Kappeler washed the Merino/Corriedale cross fleece by hand and spun the yarn woolen, then
dyed one skein a strong blue and painted the other to self-stripe. She paired the yarn with an
argyle motif from a weaving pattern and created this bold take on a classic.

Fiber: 1 oz (28 g) Merino/Corriedale
fleece in each of 2 colors.
Shown here: 1 oz eggshell blue, 1 oz
space-dyed yellow, pink, teal, and purple.
Preparation: Handcarded rolags.
Drafting method: Long draw.
Wheel system: Double drive.
Yarn classification: Worsted.
Ratio (singles/plying): 13:1.
Singles direction spun: Z.
Numbers of plies: 2.
Plied direction spun: S.
Plied twists per inch: 6.
Plied wraps per inch: 12.
Total yardage: 130 yd (119 m).
Yards per pound: 1,050.
Yardage used: 98 yd (90 m) of blue yarn
and 72 yd (66 m) of space-dyed yarn.
Needles: U.S. size 5 (3.75 mm) set of
5 dpns. Adjust needle size if necessary
to obtain the correct gauge.
Gauge: 12 sts and 16 rnds = 2" (5 cm)
in patt.
Finished size: 7 1⁄2" (10 cm) from brim
to top of hat; 20" (51 cm) circumference.
To fit a woman’s size small.
Note: While working the two-color pattern,
carry the inactive yarn loosely in the back
and twist it around the working yarn every
4 sts to secure the floats and prevent
puckering (see Glossary).
