GROUP B (Short Answer Questions) 2. Answer any one question. A. Prove that Kelvin-Plank and Clausius statements are equivalent statements. B. For the pipe Shown in Figure, the diameter of the pipe in section 1-1 and 2-2 are 10 cm and 20 cm respectively. If the volume flow rate through the pipe is 0.005m3/s, find the average velocity at the two sections.

GROUP C (Long Answer Questions) 3. Answer any one question. A. i) A heat pump working on the Carnot cycle takes in heat from a reservoir at 5C and delivers heat to a reservoir at 60C. The heat pump is driven by a reversible heat engine which takes in heat from a reservoir at 840C and rejects heat to a reservoir at 60C. The reversible heat engine also drives a machine that absorbs 30 kW. If the heat pump extracts 17 kJ/s from the 5C reservoir, determine the rate of heat supply from the 840C source, and (b) the rate of heat rejection to the 60C sink. 8 ii) Check whether the following sets of velocity components satisfy the continuity equation of steady incompressible flow: 7 2 2 a) U= x -y , v= x-2xy b) U= -ln xy, v= B. i) A lump of steel of mass 10 kg at 627C is dropped in 100 kg of oil at 30C. The specific heats of steel and oil are 0.5 kJ/ kg K and 3.5 kJ/ kg K respectively. Calculate the entropy change of the steel, the oil and the universe. 7 iii)One kg of water at 75c is heated at a constant pressure of 0.8 MPa until it becomes super -heated steam at 200c. Find the Change in volume, enthalpy, and entropy. 8
