Magnetisability
not present 1)
NIROSTA 4541 may be slightly magnetic in quenched condition. Magnetisability increases with increasing cold working.
Chemical resistance
Our publication Chemical Resistance of NIROSTA Steels contains tables giving some idea of the chemical resistance.
Processing
NIROSTA 4541 can be easily cold worked (e.g. bending, flanging, deep drawing, spinning, etc.). However, the higher cold work hardening compared to mild steels means that correspondingly greater forces are necessary for forming. Cold working, individual final heat treatment and welding in the construction of highpressure containers should be carried out according to the regulations of the AD Work Sheet HP 7/3. This stipulates that a final heat treatment is not necessary with: a) a degree of cold forming 15 % and b) after welding. Final heat treatment is necessary
with degrees of cold forming greater than 15 %. Tempering colours or scale from heat treatment or welding reduce corrosion resistance and should be removed chemically (e.g. by pickling or with pickling pastes) or mechanically (e.g. by grinding or blasting with glass pellets or non-ferrous, sulphur-free quartz sand). Due to the tendency to cold work hardening and to the poor thermal conductivity, machining should be carried out with tools made of good quality high-speed steel (good cooling required) or, better still, with tungsten carbide tools. NIROSTA 4541 can be polished.
Welding
Weldability: NIROSTA 4541 can be easily welded by all methods except gas welding. Filler metals: NOVONIT THERMANIT 4551 H/HE 4316 JE
Approvals: This material and the filler metal are approved for use in the construction of pressurised containers.
Applications
NIROSTA 4541 is resistant to intercrystalline corrosion, even in welded condition, due to the addition of titanium to form carbides under continuous operating conditions up to 400 C. NIROSTA 4541 is used in all branches of the food, beverage and tobacco and chemical industries, especially in the manufacture of nitrate fertilisers and the construction of vehicles for the transport of aggres-
sive chemicals. In addition, NIROSTA 4541 is used for silencers and emission control equipment. NIROSTA 4541 is approved for use as wall ties in the building industry. Due to its great toughness, NIROSTA 4541 is also used in many low-temperature engineering applications.
