TASK 2: SUMMARY

TITLE: When Generous Met Generous Hughie Erskine, a young man with a good profile but had some difficulties on making money. With a good looking appearance he had, he was adored by a daughter of a retired Colonel, named Laura Merton. Hughie was very in love and ready to get marry with his girl. The Colonel was really liked him but unfortunately he must get ten thousand pounds to make his dream comes true, to marry Laura.

Hughie has a good friend, Alan Trevor. Trevor is a painter. Just like the other typical painter, he was attracted at Hughie because of Hughie personal charm. Taking his time to know Hughie better, he realized that Hughie had some good values and a kind-hearted man, made them closer as well.

One fine day, Hughie met his good friend on his way to see Laura. Trevor was painting a picture of an old beggar. The old beggar stood at the corner of the studio and Hughie had never seen that old man before. Hughie was very impressed of the model Trevor had for painting on that day. Besides, he felt pity on the old man too. Hughie expressed his sympathy by gave a sovereign to the old man who standing within his rags. Hughie need it too, but he knew that the old man needs it more. The beggar smiled as the sovereign moved into his hand, and he thanked.

In that night, Hughie met Trevor at Pallete Club. He asked Trevor about the picture of the old beggar. After giving the answer, Trevor mentioned about the old man. The old man is actually the richest man in Europe. His name is Baron Hausberg. He was also Trevors good friend. He quite devoted to Hughie too. He asked every single thing about Hughie and Trevor told him included the personal affair. Hughie was very surprised of what he heard and a bit upset with his friend. Trevor should have introduced that old man to him first. He was ashamed on what he had done to Baron. But, Trevor had his own reason since Baron was not in his full dress at that time. Trevor puzzled and he wondered why Baron very interested to know everything about Hughie. Finally he saw that it was all about the sovereign.

Hughie felt very guilty towards Baron Hausberg. The next morning, a visitor came to represent Baron Hausberg. Hughie thought the visitor is coming for an apology and he offered Baron Hausberg his sincerest apologies. Yet, clearly it was not the main point. The visitor came to pass him a sealed envelope. On the outside it was written A wedding present to Hugh Erskine and Laura Merton, from and old beggar, and it was a cheque for ten thousand pounds inside.

TASK 3: WRITING

From the short story I have read, I would like to choose Baron Hausberg to be my favourite character. Even though he was not the main character in the story perhaps, but his appearance give a strong impact and good example to others. In this short story, I can see that he is a very down to earth and generous.

For instance, he was very down to earth and humble when Hughie gave him a sovereign. He never tried to tell anything about himself to Hughie. He just smiled and thanked to the young man. This sentence is the textual evidence. The old man started, and faint smile flitted across his withered lips. Thank you, sir , he said Thank you. For the second example is when he was willing to put himself within rags and give a commission to Trevor to paint his picture, which he is looked totally like a beggar. Although he was the richest man in Europe, but he was very humble to put him in rags.

For my second reason, he proved that he is very generous when he gave a cheque of ten thousand pounds as the wedding present for Hughie and Laura. After Trevor told him everything about Hughie, I think Baron see that Hughie deserved to be repaid of what he has done to Baron. The textual evidence is, The Baron, said the old gentleman, with a smile, has commissioned me to bring you this letter, and he extended a sealed envelope. On the outside was written, A wedding present to Hugh Erskine and Laura Merton, from an old beggar, and inside was a cheque for ten thousand pounds.

All in all, I have stated the reasons of choosing Baron Hausberg with the textual evidences to support my answers.

4. REFLECTION

Based on my reading on the short story, I have got some benefits which are good for neither personal nor professional. There are several noble values that can be practiced in our daily life and can be absorbed to the little ones. For examples, we learn to be modest like Baron and to be a kind-hearted like Hughie. From the reading, I can attract others especially the children to separate the values effectively through the story.

Moreover, I can develop my comprehension in reading English text which also improves my reading and writing skills. For the time being, reading and writing skills in English are very important especially among the teachers because we might get better result with a different type of exposure in teaching process which might introduced the pupil to a new learning environment.

Indirectly, I also discovered a number of new vocabularies which might help me on the next reading to understand the correct meaning of the whole text. It is also encourage me to search for new words or proverbs in English to empower my abilities in writing and speaking as well.

Jump to the conclusion, I have learned a lot while finishing this coursework which are very helpful to me to be practiced on the next tasks. I hope I could absorb as much benefits as I can and manage to deliver it to others.
