Inevitably, youll probably throw it on the charger for as many minutes as you can afford before heading out, but settle on the idea that you will be incommunicado during the latter portion of the night. That is, unless teenage innovator Eesha Khares creation sees the light of day. As presented at the science fair, her creation charges an LED, but she says that it is flexible. It can easily adapt so that it can be used in flexible displays and even in fabric. Right now, it can hold 10,000 recharging cycles, which is far better from the standard rechargeable battery, which can only withstand around 1,000.

Spending a childhood engrossed in such technologically inspiring television shows like Voltron, Small Wonder, and Power Rangers, it's really no surprise that all things digital would continue to inspire Josh to the point that he would one day make a living writing about the things he loves. After graduating from SUNY Purchase in 2006 with a degree in journalism/anthropology, he spent years working as an editor for Travel + Leisure. Josh doesn't look forward to a Cylon takeover, but he does eagerly await the day he can become half cyborg.

jesterking 57 days ago So shes using electrical double-layer capacitors As I have said in the past. Batteries are not the future. Capacitors are. While EDLCs have features similar to Chemical Batteries, the differences are drastic. I wonder which EDLC design she was using The sad thing about her project is Its nothing new, and its not feasible in everyday devices. As the size of an EDLC would need to be about 100 times larger than that of a conventional battery. She got excited that she could light an LED which takes very little energy needed. If they just solve that size problem, wed have it made. Capacitors people. Its the future. Stop thinking about Lithium Ion Batteries.

Hagbard Celine 57 days ago This is only even vaguely impressive because shes in high school. Graphene supercapacitors are insanely simple to manufacture (you can even get simple instructions on Youtube), and shes made no significant innovation to the technology here. Its an exciting technology largely because it is so simple, and since this bright young girl has essentially repackaged what UCLA grad student Maher El-Kady already discovered (she even used the same testing precess with the LED), Im finding it hard to be impressed.

Xander Luciano 57 days ago Well, technically a teacher had done the research for this a year or so back and she just simply adapted it into a more practical application. Im not against it, Im just stating that the title is a little misleading.

Xander Luciano 57 days ago True, but so far there is no large scale improvement. Li-Ion can hold more. No to mention if you arc a super capacitor how screwed you would be. Dropping your phone in water would be a lot worse. Batteries would need to be charged more often most likely, but I suppose a couple 10 minute charges might be better than 1 2 hour charge. If you scale this up you would either need more charging time or a LOT more power. LEDs draw a lot less power than a phone.
