Dear Partners in Christ:

Goiania, Goias, Brazil February 19, 19^8

, With your prayers and support we arrived on Christmas day in Brasilia, Brazil, It was snowing when we left Kennedy Airport in New York City, and had just rained before we set down on the airstrip. Brazil is the end of our rainbovr, A whole host of central Brazilian missionaries were at the airport to greet us. A warm handshake was extended as soon as we popped out of the plane. The missionary kids kept getting in the way as we were going through customs. The government officials were most cordial. The things which we had xidth us were processed duty freean answer to a number of your prayers. After a few brief introductions we were off to the home of Harry Scates to deposit our things, and on tb the William Loft family residence for a Christmas turkey dinner. Our first night we stayed in modern Brasilia, and on the next morning with the McAfees to Goiania, our new home. The first days we stayed with our co-workers, and Mrs. Charles Kent. Charles and Ann spent hours taking us here and there, helping us get settled, Barbara and I will be stajdng in the three room apartment located in the old Goiania Institute Building, where numerous first term missionaries have sojourned and veterans, too. The apartment is located about 100 yards across a field from the APLIC house and print shop. We have a kitchen-dining room, a living room, and

a bedroom (oh, yes, and a water closet, too)*

will be our home until June, when we move into the APLIC house while Charles and Ann are on furlough.

Monday, Wednesday, and Friday Barbara and i are studying Portuguese in Anapolis under two former teachers from the missionary language school in Campinas.

We are negotiating for a tutor for a half day on Tuesday and Thursday. We wish that we could spend a year of fulltime study in learning the language. But this is not possible. Pray that we are good stewards of the time that we do have I We have been worshipping and attending Bible study and Wednesday night prayer
meetings at Villa Nova Church of Christ. This is the original church of Christ

in Goiania, established by David Sanders when he first arrived in Brazil. The attendance has been averaging in the upper 50's. It is not the strongest church of Christ in Goiania, nor the weakest. After being a part of Lincoln Christian for several years, it takes a bit of adjustment to become oriented to such a small number. Our Bible school class in Lincoln, the Merri-Mates, is larger than
the Villa Nova church.

Barbara and I have started our own little benevolent work.

and find her a home.

January 29th we

acquired a five day old little girl who was unwanted by her unwed mother. Mrs. Ed Knowles was to come down from the Federal district and take the "manina" (baby)
Three or four of the Christian ladies in Goiania wanted the

sweet little darling, not the least of which was Dona Joanna (Mrs. Barbara Joan Lowe)who already had her. Guess who has been waking up every night around 300! Marjorie Ann xd-ll become one of your missionaries if we can make the necessary
arrangements.

We're all here! May 19th our long lost barrels arrived battered but safe. It was like Christmas in May. Only a curtain, half a drape, and a Sears catalogue were missingif they were packed. Some of the aluminum ware was dented and a couple nicknacks w-ere broken. Considering they had traveled over 1000 miles on a burner dirt road, they were in wonderful shape. We were pleased to receive all the "goodies." After they arrived, we apent the next couple days Tinpacking and checking for broken and missing items. Now we are ready to pack again.
The first week in June the Directory of APLIC decided to cut back operations in the shop until Charles returns and allow us to have a year for language study and orientation. Beginning September 2nd we are enrolled in the best school of Portuguese available. We will move to Campinas, Sao Paulo the last week in July to prepare for the forthcoming classes. "The gypsies" are on the move again.

Greetings from your three missionaries in Goiania, Brazil.

Ebccluding a few

We have a blue I965 Volkswagen sedan which we purchased from the Christian Missionary Fellovrship for $1,600. lilhat a blessing the car has been. It would
have been impossible -frjithout it to meet the obligations which have been ours

since Charles and Ann unexpectedly left (due to the illness of Charles' father).
Luckily, our credit was good. Since purchasing the car the value has risen to

$1,900. Our only problem with the new car is that the $75 a month pajrments are sapping our field funds (mission monej'- for operating the shop and paying for language schooling).

Our first term of language school xd.ll cost us about $1,600over $200 a
month. With our car payments we just don't have the service funds to cover

expenses the next few months.

(We still need more service funds!)

To meet this

emergency, we would like to ask 24 Bible School classes to make one car payment. We would accept any personal contributions too. Send money for this problem designated "CAR FUND" to our forwarding agents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph D. Baker. Watch the L01.7E NOTES for a list of life-savers. We would be happy to see your
Bible School class on that list.

Prospects of the Association for Christian Literature, abbreviated APLIC, have never been brighter. Thomas W. Fife has been appointed President of the
Editorial Commission. His next term of service he will devote full time to

administrating the preparation of materials and editing. When Charles returns, sjid I have finished language school, APLIC will have the personnel to emphasize promotion and distribution, to increase and upgrade materials, and to expand productionincluding underwriting expenses through commercial printing. A great day is dawning in Brazil for evangelical Christianity. Now is the time for an all-out effort to produce and distribute New Testament literature.

Thank you for making it possible for us to be a psxt of God's program of saving souls in Brazil. We are partners with our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ in the most important work in the worlds winning souls for Him,
Yours in Christ,
Carol and Barbara Lowe

Dear Partners with ChristS

August 1st a truck of the Vieira Transport Company will arrive in Goiania to move our belongings to Campinas, Sao Paulo# Both Barb and I are anxious to move, but not ready. I have a number of things that need to be done in the shop before we leave. Barb hopes to malce a couple
of dresses for school.

Last x^reek we took a hurried trip to Campinas to pay our matriculation fees and look for a house. Since we were earlymost people td-ll be moving in during August^r-re found a suitable house in just two days. Boy, prices are sure high for a smr.ll toi^ boy like me. We looked at a number

of houses that were renting for $150 a month that x^rere in poor repair. Most of the houses that missionaries are living in (except those owned by the Presbyterians) mil rent for about ^175 a month next term. We found
a house that was a little old, but servicable for about 4^155 a month.

We were reedy to go sign the lease x-rhen we saw this new home (about 3 yecrs old) that was for rent. It looked like the houses that had been

renting for $175$180 a monthj

I thought it was a waste of time for us

to go look at it. We went and looked at it anyway. The oi\mers had just moved to an apartment uptoi-m close to where they work. They leased it to

us for $150 a month. Barbara is sure pleased.

We have been initiated, Marjorie Anne recently was sick. We noticed that she was a little fussyunusual for our little angel. While Barb XTas gone I slipped her some ice cream. The next morning she had a high fever and XTOuldn't eat. The doctor gave her a penicillin shot. She
broke out in a rash. The doctor said that she had an infection xd.th an

accompaning rash.

He prescribed a little $5#00 jar of salve.

The mothers

all said she had measles.

(not the German kind). Would anyone like to buy some salve?

A day later the doctor said she had me.nsles

Jim Moreland lives and works in that pioneer town.

Please make special mention of us in your prayers. Pray xjith us that these next fei-j months xd.ll be fmitful ones for our study of

our needs. We pray that x-jre x^ill be good stewards of that which is intrusted to us, to the glory of Christ, Yours in Christ,
