Several of the articles in this issue cover the environment. This is, of course, natural when you supply products for water and wastewater treatment, and are involved in solutions that affect the development of communities and even change the lives of people. Some discouraging information on this subject can be found in the article on pages 6 7. For example the fact that almost 1.5 billion people in the world live without clean water, and that over 2 billion people still do not have access to satisfactory wastewater treatment. These facts are a challenging responsibility for any company involved in this area. It makes you realise that the whole environmental issue covers so much more than just having environmental-friendly production with focus on sustainability, energy-saving and reliable products, and a strong environmental awareness in general. What we, as a company, always strive to do is to follow the policy of cost-effective pumping. In this concept, we include the entire idea of Life Cycle Cost with its cornerstones reliability and efficient solutions over time. As an example, on page 10, you can read about sewage treatment in Prague, where the agitator solution saves the city 30,000 EURO annually per digester. We will continue focus on developing and offering environmental-friendly solutions that provides the lowest possible LCC, to all corners of the Earth.

The province of Leinster, Ireland, has solved its problems with blocking pumps: Thanks to the ContraBlock, we have a dramatic reduction in call-outs says Ed Bolger, Executive Technician of the Environmental Department.

ABS launches the

Next Generation
of Blockage-free Pumping
Blockage-free operation has already been proven in more than one million installations world-wide. ABS is now launching the Next Generation of the ContraBlock, with even higher efficiency and improved non-clogging features.

NO MORE BLOCKAGE

atented for the first time over 30 years ago, the ContraBlock system has been continually developed and improved, giving it a unique position in blockage-free pumping.
FIELD AND CLOGGING TESTS

The new ContraBlock system has gone through field tests at various locations in Europe, the USA and Asia. Extensive laboratory tests, including witness clogging tests by the well-known test institute LGA in Germany, have also been undertaken. Among the items tested were towels, cloths, rubbish sacks, hygiene articles, plastic bottles and shoes. The tests showed not only that the pumps did not block, but that the pumped articles were not cut up they had only a small amount of wear and tear, and were easily retained by a screen typically located at the inlet to a treatment plant.
EFFICIENCY TESTS

Tests have also been carried out to measure the efficiency and clogging characteristics of various types of hydraulics used in sewage pumps.

Resistance to Blockage Initial Efficiency

The county council had used a number of various pumps over the years, but learned from experience that the ABS ContraBlock TM system was the most reliable,Bolger adds.

Nobody wants to be called out in the middle of the night to clear a blocked pump.
The ContraBlock acts as an anti-blockage device with an open single or multiblade impeller revolving on a spiralled groove, ensuring that solids or fibres are transported through the pump without blockage.

The initial efficiency is high, and the possibility to easily restore efficiency through the adjustable wear plate makes it also a durable solution over time. The freedom from blockage plus high hydraulic efficiency provide us with the lowest life cycle cost, Ed Bolger concludes.

The tests were done with single channel, twin channel (both closed and open), vortex, cutter and ContraBlock impellers for DN 100 to DN 150 pumps. The test results showed that the ContraBlock system had the best combination of resistance to blockage and efficiency. The ContraBlock system is available in various discharge sizes from DN 80 to DN 300 on pumps from 1.3 kW to 100 kW.

Haindl Papier:

Pioneer in Recycling
In 1999, Haindl Papier GmbH in Germany was awarded the European Recycling Award for their innovative work with recycled paper and product intregrated environmental protection. Even the new PM 3 machine at the Augsburg mill, called the most modern paper machine in the world, is part of an environmental policy which involves the whole Haindl Group.

aindl began using recycled paper as raw material as early as the thirties. The technical break-through came in 1962, when one of the Haindl mills launched one of the first de-inking lines (for removing printing ink from paper) in the world. A main part of the companys research has since then been focused on various aspects of recycled paper, such as using recycling even in high quality paper production. One example is the Haindl mill which produces paper containing of 100% recycled paper for printing dailies . The company estimates that about 900,000 tonnes of wood (dry weight) are saved annually thanks to this recycling method!

Special measures were taken to reduce the costs of energy and water to the seals, without affecting pump reliability in any way.
NEW CONCEPT

In order to enhance the recycling paper concept even further, in 1999 Haindl invested about DM 800 million in a new paper machine, PM 3, in Augsburg, Bavaria. The machine has been labelled The most modern and innovative paper machine in the world.

The new, unique installation concept System PMI, Pump Mill Integration, both saves time and gives improved operating conditions, resulting in longer lifetime for the pump, seal and coupling.

Some data about the impressive machine project says that 200,000 man hours were used for research and development and that more than 40 people were members of the project team. Furthermore, about 1,000 people were involved in building and installing. The total weight of the machine is almost 6,000 tonnes, the central cylinder

Clean Water
Secure Life for Future Generations
Water is a prerequisite to all life on Earth. It is the most valuable resource we have and, at the same time, the one we most often take for granted. However, there are still more than 1 billion people who, today, live without clean drinking water! It is also important to take care of the water we have used, so that it can later be reused. Here the statistics are even worse more than 2 billion of the Earths population have yet to be provided with access to wastewater treatment!
bout 1.4 billion of the Earths population live without clean drinking water. More than 2.3 billion people still have no access to satisfactory wastewater treatment. Water that is returned to the natural environment is often heavily polluted and carries viruses and lifethreatening bacteria. It is estimated that 80 percent of all disease and more than a third of all deaths in the developing countries are caused by the consumption of polluted water. Additional depressing statistics say that about half of the Earths rivers and lakes are today seriously polluted.

HUGE EFFORTS REQUIRED

The serious shortage of fresh water and the ever worsening pollution of fresh water resources in many regions make the management of the worlds combined water resources an extremely demanding task. Huge efforts are required at several levels in order to maintain even and high quality throughout the cycle from water sources to the return of treated wastewater to the natural environment.
GLOBAL SOLUTIONS

Agenda 21 is about creating a better world on the basis of environmental, social and economic considerations, and it covers everything from poverty and destruction of the forests to health and the management of water and wastewater.

The need for water and wastewater treatment is driven by factors such as more stringent quality requirements and new legislation. In light of Agenda 21, it is easy to understand that this market is constantly growing. Other incitements to growth are privatisation of the water industry, and urbanisation with its requirement for new and improved infrastructure. In established welfare societies, there is also a call for a modernisation and environmental tailoring of older existing systems in order to achieve better water quality. In general, wastewater treatment plants are never phased out; they are extended and upgraded to meet greater demands as the population grows. Even in Europe, approximately 30 percent of the population has yet to be connected to any municipal or state wastewater treatment plant.
GROWTH OBSTACLES

The main obstacles to rapid growth are lack of capital, often caused by political situations, municipal and central government budgetary restrictions, or

as flood protection, irrigation and, not least, treatment of industrial wastewater, Dan Drejenstam adds.
LIFE FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS

By focusing on cost-effective pumping, ABS wants to help make water and wastewater treatment as efficient as possible. The guiding principle in all our research and development is to produce highly efficient products that require a minimum of energy consumption and that are easy to install, manage and maintain, i.e. that in the long run provide the most cost-effective solution and the lowest Life Cycle Cost from all points of view. There is a long way to go yet before clean, fresh drinking water is a matter of course in all the countries of the world. With collective efforts, the vision of Agenda 21 can be realised: to live on the worlds resources, without, at the same time, depleting them to secure the lives of future generations.

T H E E C O - CY C L E
From Raw Water to Drinking Water
In order to provide people with access to drinking water, functioning distribution networks are needed in which raw water can be transported from water sources to treatment plants. In all cases where gravitation does not provide the motive force, pumps are required. There are often a number of pump stations that accumulate raw water and surface water, which is then transferred to a central treatment plant. In some cases, water is transported tens of kilometers from water sources to areas with a shortage of water or which are heavily populated. In order to be serviceable as drinking water, the water must pass through treatment plants for a purification process. The water is then pumped to households.

Wastewater Management
It is then important to manage water that has been used, and wastewater management is about collecting and treating the waste from toilets, sinks, bathtubs and drains. Used water is accumulated and transported to treatment works to undergo a clean-up process before being returned to the natural environment.

Mechanical Treatment
Wastewater is treated in a number of different stages. First, a mechanical treatment is carried out using screens that separate out rags, paper, pieces of wood and other trash. Sand and other heavier particles are separated by using a mostly aerated sand trap. Iron or aluminum salt can be added to precipitate phosphate in order to meet environmental restrictions of this fertilizer. Sometimes, a special flocculation tank is built where the need of mixers for good mixing and homogenisation is imperative. In the final stage of this mechanical treatment, wastewater passes slowly through primary sedimentation tanks, where the major part of unsoluted dirty sludge settles to the bottom.

Pumps, mixers and aerators are needed in various stages of the treatment process.

Micro-organisms Provide Biological Treatment

The following stage, the biological treatment, is more or less the heart of a modern treatment plant. This kind of treatment is affected by the metabolic activities of micro-organisms (bacteria, protozoa etc.) which float freely in the form of flocs in the basin. In this case, dissolved organic components, such as glucose and ammonia are biodegraded by reproducing micro-organisms and having products of lower energy. This means that the micro-organisms remove the

pollutants in a natural manner by using oxygen. The main part of biomass is returned from the clarifier for concentrating up to 3 g/l. In a special treatment in which no dissolved oxygen is needed, special micro-organisms remove nitrate another fertilizer by biodegradation. For these processes, mixers and aerators are used to circulate and aerate the liquids, not least to prevent adverse side-effects such as odors and sedimentation. Sedimentation prevents the treatment process from proceeding satisfactorily, as sludge that gathers in corners or on the bottom of the tanks before it has been sufficiently circulated, still contains some harmful substances. After the micro-organisms have done their job, the water is so clean that it can be returned to the natural environment with the aid of pumps and re-enter the Eco-cycle.

Dewatering pumps for the

Madrid Underground
A huge project is underway in Madrid to connect five peripheral towns to the underground railway network. 187 JUMBO rental pumps are currently in operation, protecting the tunnels from flooding during the construction work.

he project to connect the five towns Alcorcn, Fuenlabrada, Getafe, Leganes and Mstoles to the underground network system in Madrid, Spain, started up in October 2000. The construction of the 41 km long tunnel also involves 27 new underground stations.
SECURED PROJECT DEVELOPMENT

At present, 187 rental pumps from ABS are in operation at different locations to secure smooth project development. The pumps are from the JUMBO

range of dewatering pumps, from < 1 kW up to 24 kW motors. Several portable JUMBO Sludge pumps are also in operation says Enrique Martnez, who has been coordinating the rental operations. The pumps protect the construction site from flooding and secure a reliable progress of the work, in order to complete it in time and, not least, to create a safe

environment for the workers.

FINALISED IN 2003

The ABS representative has a chat with one of the construction workers to ensure that the project is proceeding according to plan.

The tunnel project involves several construction and contracting firms, and the total project cost is estimated to be more than 900 MEURO. The project is planned to be finalised by March 2003.

The treatment plant contains twelve digesters, six of them belong to the first stage and the other six belong to the second treatment stage.

Before the new agitator installation, the mixing in the digesters was made by a combination of biogas and hydraulic mixing says Mr Cerych, the Technical Director of Prague SWTP. The rated power of a motor for the biogas mixing was 33 kW, and for the hydraulic mixing 44 kW. The agitators from ABS are designed to mix the whole tank without additional mixing. The rated power of the agitators are as little as 5.5 kW, which saves a lot of energy and costs: On a yearly basis, we save 60,000 DM or 30,000 EURO per digester! says Mr Cerych.

During the 13th and 14th centuries, Prague was one of Europes largest and most important cities. Today, Prague is a top tourist spot, attracting millions of people every year. The city is famous for its well-preserved buildings, with a city centre like a museum of 900 years of architecture representing Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Art Noveau design.

California Dam Project

Ensured Water Supply for the City

OUTLOOK
An unusual voyage...

of Solvang

during extensive excavation

In a state prone to earthquakes, building projects must make certain design adjustments to ensure measures are in place to protect people and property during a catastrophic earthquake. Such design methods were undertaken during the retrofit at the Bradbury Dam located on Lake Cachuma near Santa Barbara, California.

he Galapagos Islands are a fascinating corner of the world, where only a few inhabitants share the territory with turtles, iguanas and hundreds of bird species. The place became famous and well-known world-wide when Charles Darwin carried out research there, and the unique paradise islands are now visited by thousands of tourists every year. The Galapagos belongs to Ecuador and consist of more than a dozen islands. Today, the area is a National Park and Marine Biology Reserve, where environmental protection is a natural lifestyle. One of the largest islands is Santa Cruz, where several resorts are located. A Santa Cruz hotel recently purchased two AFP 1546 pumps for their sewage pumping station. The pumps had an unusual way of finding their final destination. The pumps were first sent from ABS manufacturing unit in Ireland to Cartagena in Colombia, and then on to Guayaquil in Ecuador. The trickiest part was then delivering them to Santa Cruz. The Galapagos are located in the Pacific Ocean right on the equator and more than 1,000 kilometres from the continent. The solution was a Hercules C-130 carrier from the Ecuadorian Air Force, which was released by the government to transport the pumps and accessories to the Galapagos. But, if it was easy to load the plane with the pumps, using the cranes at the airport in Guayaquil, imagine how difficult it was to unload and transport them to the pumping station in a place without any facilities; no cranes, no trucks, no roads. The only way was to hire natives who unloaded the pumps with their own bare hands and then transported them on their shoulders for about 6 kilometres. The AFP pumps had a long and unusual journey, but are now in place and installed to serve all the tourists visiting this Pacific Ocean paradise.

The problem:
All of the soil at the base of the dam needed to be removed due to a condition called alluvium which allows soil to liquefy under the extreme forces that can occur during earthquakes. To accomplish this, the groundwater table had to be lowered so that excavation could take place at the base of the dam. Since 5,000 residents in the city of Solvang receive their water supply from this dam, measures were taken during this three-month project to assure that their service would not be interrupted.

The solution:
ABS was contacted to design a system that would allow peak and off-peak usage, and continuous operation of the water supply during the retrofit. The system consisted of two 95 hp (70 kW) submersible JUMBO 604 HV pumps, complete with electrical panels and 1,000 ft (300 m) of power and control cables. The pump system produced a flow rate of 3,500 USgpm (220 l/s) with 100% standby capacity. The pumps were floated out on the lake on a barge, and installed at a depth of 65 ft (20 m) below the waters surface. Piping was installed on the top of the barge and connected to a 21,000 gallon (8,000 l) steel storage tank which served as a surge and overflow tank for the project.

Large cooling water pumps will be installed in the Leningrad Nuclear Power Plant, LNPP, in Sosnovy Bor outside St. Petersburg, Russia. Four of the existing eight cooling water pumps in the plant will be exchanged for new ABS pumps with flood-proof motors. One reason for installing the new pumps is a risk analysis that predicts earthquakes in the area; the flood-proof motors ensure that the pumps are not damaged if the area would flood.
