The L ockheed E x p lo re r m odels a r e sim plified, lo w -c o st v ersio n s of t h e X - 1 7 b a l l i s t i c r e - e n t r y t e s t v e h i c l e . T h e i r p e r f o r m a n c e c h a r a c te r is tic s m ake th e m acceptable for geophysical and com m unications data g a t h e r i n g . H o w e v e r , t h e y a r e n o t r e c o m m e n d e d f o r e v a l u a t i o n of c o m p o n e n t s o r e q u i p m e n t t h a t i s s e n s i t i v e to r o l l i n g o r h i g h g a c c e l e r a t i o n s (100 g).
