T h i s r e p o r t i s a presentation of c e r t a i n flight mechanical data obtained from the SA-8 flight test. Digitized data a r e p r e s e n t e d i n g r a p h i c a l form. Also included a r e schematic drawings showing the i n s t r u m e n t location on the vehicle. T h i s r e p o r t p r e s e n t s digitized data i n a n e a s y - t o - r e a d f o r m f o r u s e by design and technical personnel and supplements the S a t u r n SA-8 Flight Evaluation R e p o r t and many o t h e r r e p o r t s published by the various laboratories. INTRODUCTION Included in this r e p o r t is information concerning the t r a n s d u c e r s , a c c e l e r o m e t e r s and other measuring devices a s well a s a d e s c r i p t i v e drawing showing t h e i r location o n the vehicle.
No a n a l y s i s of data is m a d e in this r e p o r t . F o r a n a l y s i s and i n t e r p r e t a t i o n of t h e s e m e a s u r e m e n t s , s e e the Saturn SA-8 F l i g h t Evaluation R e p o r t o r t h e additional specialized evaluation r e p o r t s published by the v a r i o u s l a b o r a t o r i e s of MSFC. A brief explanation of s o m e of the information i s given so t h a t it m a y be m o r e e a s i l y i n t e r p r e t e d by the u s e r . The attitude e r r o r angles shown a r e f r o m the S.T-124 stabilized platform. The S-I s t a g e guidance w a s computed f r o m a t i m e polynomial. T h e computed yaw and roll commands w e r e z e r o a f t e r 24 seconds f o r the S-I powered flight; t h e r e f o r e , they a r e not shown beyond 75 seconds. The tilting p r o g r a m and s t e e r i n g c o m m a n d s shown f o r the S-IV flight w e r e generated by the ASC-15 digital computer. Angles of attack w e r e m e a s u r e d only by the Q-ball differential p r e s s u r e m e a s u r e m e n t s . The data f r o m t h e s e m e a s u r e m e n t s w e r e f i l t e r e d digitally with a 1 c p s low p a s s filter. The f r e e - s t r e a m a n g l e s of a t t a c k a r e shown calculated from t h e s e f i l t e r e d data i n conjunction with a wind tunnel d e t e r m i n e d coefficient. T h e s e m e a s u r e m e n t s a r e not c o n s i d e r e d valid in the low dynamic p r e s s u r e region before 18 seconds and a f t e r 120 seconds. The angle of a t t a c k is a l s o S h o w n calculated f r o m attitude angles, t r a j e c t o r y angles and rawinsonde m e a s u r e d winds.
T h i s calculated angle of a t t a c k is only valid until the l o s s of rawinsonde m e a s u r e d winds at 1 0 3 . 7 seconds. The individual m e a s u r e m e n t s of engine a c t u a t o r position on all engines, a r e shbwn i n pitch and yaw. Also shown is a n a v e r a g e of the a c t u a t o r positions i n the pitch and yaw p l a n e s . F o r the S-I s t a g e , t h e a v e r a g e r o l l a c t u a t o r position i s obtained by differentially a v e r a g ing t h e eight t e l e m e t e r e d -actuator positions. The a v e r a g e r o l l a c t u a t o r position for the S-IV stage i s obtained by differentially averaging the a c t u a t o r positions of engines one t h r o u g h f o u r . An a p p r e c i a b l e S-I a c t u a t o r response due to sloshing was o b s e r v e d . The pitch a n d yaw a c t u a t o r deflections a r e shown a f t e r being f i l t e r e d with a 76-point band p a s s f i l t e r around the sloshing frequency mode. Six bending a c c e l e r o m e t e r s , a s well a s the two control a c c e l e r o m e t e r s , a r e shown. The bending a c c e l e r o m e t e r s , located i n the i n s t r u m e n t unit, on the s p i d e r beam, and on the t h r u s t ring, have been digitally filtered using a band p a s s f i l t e r around the first bending m o d e . The control a c c e l e r o m e t e r s , a c t i v e in the c o n t r o l loop f r o m 35 to 100 s e c o n d s , a r e shown a f t e r being f i l t e r e d with a 101-point 10.w p a s s f i l t e r i n one graph, and a band p a s s f i l t e r around the first bending m o d e frequency in a n o t h e r . All digitized data shown have been shifted by e i t h e r computing a shift f r o m a balance of the equations of motion o r by a n amount n e c e s s a r y to m a k e the r a w t e l e m e t r y data r e a d z e r o before engine ingition. All shifts a r e shown on the page with the drawing and m e a s u r i n g c h a r a c t e r i s tics. Any e r r a t i c change in the data which o c c u r s a t the a p p r o x i m a t e t i m e s of 31, 91, 130, 200, 400, and 600 seconds i s due to inflight t e l e m e t r y calibrations. In some i n s t a n c e s , t h e r e is a s t r a i g h t line i n the data at t h e s e times in which the t e l e m e t r y c a l i b r a t i o n s have been smoothed through. The t e l e m e t r y during r e t r o rocket firing was not blacked out completely but is noisy and should be used with caution. All data w e r e plotted a t 0. 1 second i n t e r v a l s except for the bending a c c e l e r o m e t e r data which w e r e plotted at 0 . 0 2 second i n t e r v a l s ,
