of Isabelle de Montolieus novel is a
textual encounter between a rather
conventional Swiss woman and a
British radical. Caroline of Lichtfeld
(1783) is a sentimental novel which
tells the story of a young woman who
comes to realise that the young and
handsome man she has fallen for is
less worthy of her affections than her
older, less dashing husband. A prolifc
and respected translator herself,
Montolieu brought Austens Sense and
Sensibility and Persuasion to a French
speaking audience. Just as Montolieu
did in her own translations, Holcroft
reworked parts of the novel to make
it more appealing to his intended
audience.

signifcant regions in the story of
early European colonialism. Though
initially claimed by the Spanish, other
European countries followed close
behind, keen to take their share of
the islands and associated wealth.
In the 1620s, England established
plantations on a number of islands
and in 1655 Oliver Cromwell began
his western design an ambitious
military campaign across land and
water which aimed to conquer the
Spanish West Indies. Achieving only
partial success, the campaign sparked
a war with Spain that lasted a decade
and a half. In spite of these hostilities
the English presence in the Caribbean
was eventually acknowledged and
continues to this day.
This four-volume collection brings
together rare pamphlets from the
formative years of the English
involvement in the Caribbean.
