Brewing Science, Technology
and Print, 17001880
James Sumner
Sumner charts the theory and practice
of brewing in Britain and Ireland
during the eighteenth and nineteenth
centuries. From an oral culture derived
from home-based skills, brewing
industrialized rapidly and developed
an extensive trade literature, based
increasingly on the authority of
chemical experiment. Brewing as a
profession is set within its social and
technical context.
Sumners lively survey opens up
new avenues for understanding the
circulation of knowledge and the
emergence of new scientifc disciplines.
Jim Secord, University of
Cambridge

The Study of Anatomy in
Britain, 17001900
Fiona Hutton
Before the 1832 Anatomy Act the
only legal source of cadavers for
medical use was the bodies of executed
murderers. As anatomy became the
dominant medical discipline of the
nineteenth century, the need for
bodies as a teaching tool increased
exponentially. Hutton looks at
Manchester and Oxford to provide
a comparative history of anatomical
study. Using the Anatomy Act as a
focal point, she examines how these
two cities dealt with the need for
bodies over two centuries.

Modern German Midwifery,
18851960
Lynne Fallwell
Between the late eighteenth and
the early twentieth century, the
industrialized world experienced a
transition in birth practices from the
holistic wise woman midwife to the
male medical specialist. While in many
countries this gendered struggle led
to a separation of midwifery from the
rest of modern medicine, in Germany
midwives took an active role in the
transition from traditional practice to
modern institutionalized healthcare.
Fallwell explores this transition and
sets it in its wider socio-historical
context, including the role of print
culture and the changes that occurred
before, during and after the Nazi
regime.

Ascetic Modernism in the
Work of T S Eliot and
Gustave Flaubert
Henry Michael Gott
Whilst T S Eliots status as a canonical
modernist poet is secure, his legacy
remains the subject of much critical
debate. Gott examines Eliots The
Waste Land (1922) in conjunction
with Gustave Flauberts La Tentation
de Saint Antoine (1874). He provides
a highly original reading of both texts
and argues that a stylistic affnity
exists between the two works, which
derives from the authors shared
fascination for the ascetic saint.
Gott argues persuasively for a kinship
of sensibility between Gustave Flaubert
and T S Eliot ... the result is a book that
is fascinating and original. Michael

The Making of Modern
Anthrax, 18751920:
Uniting Local, National and Global
Histories of Disease
James F Stark
From the mid nineteenth century
onwards a number of previously
unknown conditions were recorded in
both animals and humans. Known by a
variety of names, and found in diverse
locations, by the end of the century
these diseases were united under the
banner of anthrax. Stark offers a fresh
perspective on the history of infectious
disease. He examines Anthrax in
terms of local, national and global
signifcance, and constructs a narrative
that spans public, professional and
geographic domains.

Bacteria in Britain,
18801939
Rosemary Wall
Focusing on the years between the
identifcation of bacteria and the
production of antibiotic drugs, Wall
presents a study into how medical
bacteriology was integrated within
both clinical practice and public
knowledge. Using a series of case
studies, she demonstrates how
physicians began to use bacteriology
as a diagnostic tool and how the
public and lawyers argued about
responsibility for bacterial diseases
in workplaces and local communities.
Wall examines particular outbreaks
of anthrax and typhoid in detail,
addressing issues of local politics and

British Socialist Fiction,
18841914
Editor: Deborah Mutch
Socialism in late Victorian and
Edwardian Britain was a highly literate
movement. Every socialist group
produced some form of written text
a periodical, pamphlets or books
through which their particular brand
of politics was promoted. Periodicals
included serials and short fction
written by and for socialists. This
fction often carries a clear political
message illustrating the concerns
of the movement and those of the
individual authors.
Many of the authors included in this
collection were key fgures within
Socialism and these texts will shed
fresh light on their views and attitudes.
Includes works by William Morris,
Maxim Grky, Robert Blatchford and

The Lesbian Muse and Poetic
Identity, 18891930
Sarah Parker
Throughout history the poetic muse
has tended to be (a passive) female
and the poet male. This dynamic
caused problems for late Victorian
and twentieth-century women poets;
how could the muse be reclaimed?
Parker looks at fn-de-sicle and
modernist lyric poets to investigate
how they overcame these challenges
and identifes three key strategies:
the reconfguring of the muse as a
contemporary instead of a historical/
mythological fgure; the muse as a
male fgure; and an interchangeable
poet/muse relationship, granting
agency to both.

The Women Aesthetes:
British Writers, 18701900
General Editor: Jane Spirit
The aesthetic movement dominated
the closing decades of the nineteenth
century. It was signifcant for the key
role women played in it. A reaction
to the commercial growth and
industrialization of the nineteenth
century, the movement favoured
beauty over utility.
This is an edited collection of fction,
poetry, plays and essays which is
representative of women writers
involved in the aesthetic movement.
The collection includes works by Edith
Nesbit, Vernon Lee and Ouida. Each
volume covers a particular decade. The
third volume focuses on writers whose
work appeared in The Yellow Book,
that benchmark of aestheticism. Each
writer is introduced and their critical
reception assessed, whilst wider
comparison with nineteenth-century
literary development is also explored.

Womens University Fiction,
18801945
Anna Bogen
The rise of the middle classes brought
a sharp increase in the number of
young men and women able to attend
university. Developing in the wake
of this increase, the university novel
often centred on male undergraduates
at either Oxford or Cambridge. Bogen
argues that an analysis of the lesser
known female narratives can provide
new insights into education, religion,
politics, literary culture and sexuality.
Works by Virginia Woolf, Rosamond
Lehman and Vera Brittain are used as
case studies and are set in their literary
and historical context.

Sex, Identity and
Hermaphrodites in Iberia,
15001800
Richard Cleminson and Francisco
Vzquez Garca
Early modern European thought held
that men and women were essentially
the same, with social forces creating
their differences. Such a view made
the existence of hermaphrodites easy
to accept. During the seventeenth
century, medical and legal arguments
began to turn against this one sex
model, with hermaphroditism seen
as a medieval superstition. This
book traces this change in Iberia in
comparison to the earlier shift in
thought in northern Europe, and with
concurrent ideas in Latin America.

Ireland in the Age of
Revolution, 17601805,
Part II
Editor: Harry T Dickinson
The latter half of the eighteenth-
century saw Irish opposition
movements being greatly infuenced by
the American and French revolutions.
The political landscape of the country
underwent dramatic changes as
both Protestant and Catholic groups
expanded their ideologies in reaction
to this foreign radicalism.
The second part of this edition
illustrates the depth and reach of this
infuence through rare pamphlets
dealing with the major political issues
of these decades. It focuses on material

Self Control: by Mary Brunton
Editor: Anthony Mandal
Self Control (1811) was a literary
sensation, it went into four editions
in its frst year of publication. The
second edition contained numerous
alterations suggested by Joanna
Baillie, to whom the book was
dedicated. Jane Austen was a fan,
reading it at least twice and worrying
that the work might foreshadow
her own creations. As well as being
entertaining, Self Control offers
its readers a thought-provoking
exploration of early nineteenth-
century attitudes towards gender and
religion.

Romantic Biology, 18901945
Maurizio Esposito
Organismal biology is an established
scholarly discipline, yet its origins
have been obscured by Darwinian
histories of biology. Emerging
over the late nineteenth and early
twentieth centuries, organismal
biology stemmed not from the work of
Darwin and his circle, but was inspired
by Romantic natural philosophers,
embryologists, anatomists and
physiologists. Esposito presents
a historiography of organicist
and holistic thought through an
examination of the work of leading
biologists from Britain and America.
He shows how this work relates to
earlier Romantic thought and sets it
within the wider context of the history
and philosophy of the life sciences.

Assessment of error and uncertainty
is a vital component of both natural
and social science. Empirical research
involves dealing with all kinds of
errors and uncertainties yet there
is signifcant variance in how such
results are dealt with. Contributors
to this volume present case studies
of research practices across a wide
spectrum of scientifc felds, including
experimental physics, econometrics,
environmental science, climate
science, industrial engineering,
measurement science and statistics.
They compare methodologies and
present the ingredients needed for an
overarching framework applicable to
all.

Franco-Scottish Relations,

Siobhan Talbott
Using sources from Britain, France
and America, Talbott presents a
comparative view of British relations
with France over the long seventeenth
century. She argues that the
Scottish-French alliance continued
undiminished following the 1560
Treaty of Edinburgh and the British
Unions of 1603 and 1707 and goes
on to situate the Franco-Scottish
relationship within the broader British
and European economic and political
climate of the time.

Editor: Sean Patrick Adams
During the nineteenth century the
American economy was able to expand
rapidly due to the availability of cheap
and plentiful supplies of coal. This

all aspects of this important energy
source through a selection of letters,
pamphlets, industry reports and
newspaper articles.
The collection details Americas frst

how Americas vast reserves of coal
and their exploitation gave rise to the
development of key industries and
the growth of the railway, as well as
creating unprecedented opportunities
for entrepreneurism and driving
capitalism.

The American Savings and
Loan Industry, 18311935
Editor: David L Mason
The recent sub-prime mortgage crisis
has created a renewed interest in the
American savings and loan industry.
Modelled on British building societies,
savings and loans were cooperative
businesses from which their members
could borrow long-term mortgages.
The popularity of this method of home
fnance led to the rapid expansion of
the industry, and by the end of the
nineteenth century more than 5,000
saving and loans were in operation
around the country.
Despite this, only limited material has
been made available to researchers.
This primary resource collection flls
a signifcant gap, providing material
from a wide variety of sources
including pamphlets, journals, book
extracts, proceedings and articles from
the trade press. The four thematic
volumes show how lack of regulation
in the industry led to previous crises
but also how it became an instrument
for social reform and increased the
opportunities for women and ethnic
groups.

The Letters of Sarah Scott
Editor: Nicole Pohl
Sarah Robinson Scott (17211795)
was a writer, translator and social
reformer, and younger sister of
Elizabeth Robinson Montagu, the

the letters she wrote to her sister
reveal her to have been a witty, even

on world domination, Gattinara

Celestial Wonders in
Reformation Germany
Ken Kurihara
Celestial phenomena were often
harnessed for use by clerics in early
modern Germany. The clergy were
the main intellectual leaders of
communities, so their emphasis on
these Wunderzeichen (wonder-signs)
would have had a signifcant effect
on the laity. Divine omens or signs of
apocalyptic warning were a useful way
to encourage obedience and respect for
clerical authority. Kurihara examines
how and why interest in these events
grew in this period, how the clergy
exploited these beliefs and the role of
sectarianism in Germany at this time.

Jewish Immigrants in
London, 18801939
Susan L Tananbaum
Between 1880 and 1939, a quarter
of a million European Jews settled
in England, with many thousands
more passing through on their way
to America. Tananbaum explores the
differing ways in which the existing
Anglo-Jewish communities, local
government and education and welfare
organizations sought to socialize
these new arrivals, focusing on the
experiences of working-class women
and children. She argues that Jewish
women experienced the process
of acculturation differently from

The Invisible Spy:
by Eliza Haywood
Editor: Carol Stewart
Interest in the work of Eliza Haywood
has increased greatly over the last two
decades. Though much scholarship
is focused on her scandalous early
career, this critical edition of The
Invisible Spy (1755) adds to the canon
of her later, more sophisticated work.
The eponymous invisible spy is a
striking literary persona, allowing
Haywood to lead the reader around
London, witnessing and exposing
hypocrisy, corruption and the suffering
of women. The book is also important
for demonstrating her continued
antagonism towards Henry Fielding
and her engagement with the major
political issues of the time.

Caroline of Lichtfeld:
by Isabelle de Montolieu
Editor: Laura Kirkley
Thomas Holcrofts 1786 translation
of Isabelle de Montolieus novel is a
textual encounter between a rather
conventional Swiss woman and a
British radical. Caroline of Lichtfeld
(1783) is a sentimental novel which
tells the story of a young woman who
comes to realise that the young and
handsome man she has fallen for is
less worthy of her affections than her
older, less dashing husband. A prolifc
and respected translator herself,
Montolieu brought Austens Sense and
Sensibility and Persuasion to a French
speaking audience. Just as Montolieu
did in her own translations, Holcroft
reworked parts of the novel to make
it more appealing to his intended
audience.

a handful of celebrated explorers.
Sailers, sealers, whalers, cooks,
mechanics, engineers, stokers and
radio operators were all necessary
in bringing the upperclass hero
explorers to the continent and
supporting their expeditions. Likewise,
resources obtained from local
populations were vital to their success.
In telling the story of these forgotten
facilitators, Maddison argues that
Antarctic exploration can be seen as an
offshoot of European colonialism.

Money as Organization,
Gustavo Del Vecchios Theory
Gianfranco Tusset
Between 1909 and 1917, Gustavo
Del Vecchio, an Italian economist,
developed a theory of circulation.
In a series of articles he set out his
thoughts on the utility and value of
money, credit, discount rates, banking
and international payments. Tusset
re-evaluates Del Vecchios theory,
concluding that money represents
a technology which organizes both
economy and society.

Triffn and William Fellner
Editors: Carol M Connell and
Joseph Salerno
The Bellagio Group was founded by
Fritz Machlup, William Fellner and
Robert Triffn at a time of global
economic crisis not unlike the one
we face today. The Bellagio Group
comprised academics, policy makers,
bankers and corporate leaders, who
worked together with the aim of
economic reform. Between 1964
and 1977 the Bellagio Group held
a series of infuential conferences.
These meetings involved the most
important economists in the world and
focused on banking practices, as well
as mechanisms to increase economic
growth.
This collection brings together the
private correspondence and published
papers of the Bellagio Groups
founders to create a vivid picture
of the personalities, issues, debates
and compromises that led to the
adoption of fexible exchange rates
and a modifed Triffn plan. The frst
three volumes are each devoted to
the letters and unpublished papers of
Machlup, Triffn and Fellner. The fnal
two volumes focus on the conferences

Experiments in Practice
Astrid Schwarz
Traditionally experimentation has
been understood as an activity
performed within the laboratory,
but in the twenty-frst century this
view is being challenged. Schwarz
uses ecological and environmental
case studies to show how scientifc
experiments can transcend the
laboratory. She explores the historical
development of the concept of
experimentation and argues that it is
time for us to rethink the traditional
Baconian view. The study offers
insights into the epistemological,
metaphysical and ethical implications
of extending the concept of the
experiment, as well as its effect on
the relationship between science and
society.

British Freemasonry,
17171813
General Editor: Rbert Pter
Freemasonry was a major
component of British cultural,
social and intellectual life during
the Enlightenment era. It was also a
successful British export, becoming
popular around the globe and evolving
into one of the social forces that bound
the countries of the Empire together.
In contrast to the secrecy that
surrounds the movement today, the
eighteenth-century press was able to
report on the feasts, processions and
concerts that were held and to even list
some of the members by name.
This primary resource collection
begins at the point when organized
freemasonry was established with
the unifcation of four lodges into
the Grand Lodge of England, and
ends with the two rival Grand
Lodges the Antients and Moderns
combined to form the United
Grand Lodge of England. The fve
themed volumes cover Institutions,
Rituals (two volumes), Debates and
Representations. Documents include
minutes of meetings, rituals (some

The Early English Caribbean
Editors: Carla Gardina Pestana
and Sharon V Salinger
The Caribbean is one of the most
signifcant regions in the story of
early European colonialism. Though
initially claimed by the Spanish, other
European countries followed close
behind, keen to take their share of
the islands and associated wealth.
In the 1620s, England established
plantations on a number of islands
and in 1655 Oliver Cromwell began
his western design an ambitious
military campaign across land and
water which aimed to conquer the
Spanish West Indies. Achieving only
partial success, the campaign sparked
a war with Spain that lasted a decade
and a half. In spite of these hostilities
the English presence in the Caribbean
was eventually acknowledged and
continues to this day.
This four-volume collection brings
together rare pamphlets from the
formative years of the English
involvement in the Caribbean.

Memoirs of Scandalous Women
These memoirs all come from women forced to live lives of
impropriety, often after ill-treatment from unscrupulous
men. Their tales of survival in the face of extreme hardship
