What is Panchak Yog

As per Astrology, when Moon effects on Pisces and Aquarius Zodiac signs, that time is called as Panchak Kaal or Yog and it is considered as an inauspicious time. Thus, the five constellation (Nakshtra) Dhanishtha, Shatbhisha, Poorva Bhaadrapad, Uttara Bhaadrapad and Revati are known as Panchak Constellations. According to astrologers, these constellations are inauspicious, due to their nature, any work done in this time repeats 5 times. So, Panchak Constellations are supposed to be Inauspicious for any Auspicious work. Funeral ceromeny of any dead body should not be done in Panchak Kaal. It is believed that if cremation is done in this period, that family loses 5 more family members.(So, if someone Expires in this Panchak Kaal and that family needs to do cremation in this period, they should make 5 mannequins (dummies) of flour and grass and should cremate with the dead body as if treating as dead body properly. By doing this, that Panchak Kaal will not affect and no family member will die by the effect of Panchak Kaal. Otherwise it is said that 5 persons of thatfamily or clan may die within period of two-months.) According to the Scriptures of Mahurat (auspicious time), at the time of arriving the mahurat for Marriage and Mundan, this time must be checked. Other auspicious functions like bhoomi poojan, house warming cermony and upnayan sanskaar etc. are not prohibited in Panchak Kaal. Also, in festivals like Bhai Dooj, Raksha Bandhan are also not prohibited in this time.

So, it is clear that Panchak Kaal is a time which originated due to changes in five imported constellations. Some of the auspicious and inauspicious works are not advised to be done in this period of time. Five Prohibited Tasks during Panchak

There are fives tasks which are prohibited to perform during Panchak. Traveling in south direction, restoring fuel, funeral of body, building house and making bed are not considered auspicious to do during Panchak. This period is inauspicious only for death body cremation in southern parts of India. 1) Panchak or Danista Panchakam : Dhanista, Shatbhishak, Poorvabhadrapada, Uttarbhadrapada and Revati Nakshatras are known as Panchak. Panchak occurs when the moon's longitude exist between 296 degrees and 360. In South this group of five stars are called Dhanistha Panchakam. If death occurs on these star days it is not good for the deceased and their wards. To overcome the evil effects some additional rites are to be done. If the star is Poorvabhadrapada Thila in brass vessel is given as gift (Daana). The house where the death took place is to be closed for some period which varies with each star. But this is not followed now a days. Karuda Puranam Chapter 10, Versesn 25 to 27: 25-27. Who dies in the Panchaka does not attain a good condition. Burning should not be done then; if it is done, another death occurs. Beginning from the middle of Dhanistha, in the five Panchaka mansions ending with Revati is not a suitable time for burning. If burning takes place, evil occurs. Harm befalls the house in which death takes place in the Riksa mansion, and some trouble arises for the sons and family. Karuda Puranam Chapter 10, Versesn 28 to 33: 28-33. Then one should place near the corpse images, O Tarksya, make of darbha grass, and consecrated with the four Riksa mantras. Purified gold should be used, and sacrifice performed with Riksa mantras, with the mantra "Pretajayata" and with leaf vessels.

Then the burning along with the images should be done, and the son, on the day of the offering of the rice-balls, should perform the pacificatory rites for him. For warding off ills he should give a vessel full of sesamum, gold, silver, diamonds, and a bronze vessel filled with clarified butter, in order. Who, after having thus performed the pacificatory ceremonies, does the burning,--no harm befalls him; and the departed goes to the supreme condition. 2) Auspicious Functions during these period (five days, Dhanista to Revati): Northern Parts of India: Traveling in south direction, restoring fuel, building house and making bed are not considered auspicious to do during Panchak. The Panchak Nakshatras are not considered during the festivals of Raksha Bandhan and Bhaiya Duj. Southern India: Only Poorvabhadrapada star is normally avoided. All the other four stars are suitable for marriage like functions. (Karuda Purana gives the five stars are not suitable only for 'Preta Samaskara'). 3) EDITED: Abnormal death and Narayana Bali: Garuda Purana 40. 4 - 12: The Narayana Bali rite is performed in all cases of abnormal death, defined as follows; death by fasting, by animals, by arson, by a curse, by cholera or any disease, SUICIDE, fall from a mountain, tree or any height, drowning, death by muggers or robbers, by snake bite, struck by lightning, murder and persons who are great sinners.
