This period is inauspicious only for death body cremation in southern parts of India. 1) Panchak or Danista Panchakam : Dhanista, Shatbhishak, Poorvabhadrapada, Uttarbhadrapada and Revati Nakshatras are known as Panchak. Panchak occurs when the moon's longitude exist between 296 degrees and 360. In South this group of five stars are called Dhanistha Panchakam. If death occurs on these star days it is not good for the deceased and their wards. To overcome the evil effects some additional rites are to be done. If the star is Poorvabhadrapada Thila in brass vessel is given as gift (Daana). The house where the death took place is to be closed for some period which varies with each star. But this is not followed now a days. Karuda Puranam Chapter 10, Versesn 25 to 27: 25-27. Who dies in the Panchaka does not attain a good condition. Burning should not be done then; if it is done, another death occurs. Beginning from the middle of Dhanistha, in the five Panchaka mansions ending with Revati is not a suitable time for burning. If burning takes place, evil occurs. Harm befalls the house in which death takes place in the Riksa mansion, and some trouble arises for the sons and family. Karuda Puranam Chapter 10, Versesn 28 to 33: 28-33. Then one should place near the corpse images, O Tarksya, make of darbha grass, and consecrated with the four Riksa mantras. Purified gold should be used, and sacrifice performed with Riksa mantras, with the mantra "Pretajayata" and with leaf vessels.
Then the burning along with the images should be done, and the son, on the day of the offering of the rice-balls, should perform the pacificatory rites for him. For warding off ills he should give a vessel full of sesamum, gold, silver, diamonds, and a bronze vessel filled with clarified butter, in order. Who, after having thus performed the pacificatory ceremonies, does the burning,--no harm befalls him; and the departed goes to the supreme condition. 2) Auspicious Functions during these period (five days, Dhanista to Revati): Northern Parts of India: Traveling in south direction, restoring fuel, building house and making bed are not considered auspicious to do during Panchak.
