ChemStewards Safety Symposium Draws over 100 Attendees

More than 100 ChemStewards members and affiliates gathered in Houston on May 22 for the National Chemical Safety Symposium hosted by SOCMAs ChemStewards. National and local authorities on process and occupational safety provided insightful presentations to inform participants of the latest trends and methodologies currently used in the industry to create safe and secure manufacturing environments. Dr. M. Sam Mannan, Chemical Engineering Department Regents Professor, Holder of the T. Michael OConnor I Chair and Director of the Mary K. OConnor Process Safety Center at Texas A&M University, delivered a thought-provoking and inspirational keynote address to attendees expressing that companies must focus on technical safety, human factors and culture, and management systems in order to prevent repeat industrial tragedies. You must have a vision, he said. The goal for every company should be zero accidents. We havent defined what safety culture is, but we have to get there.

John Herber, staff consultant to the AIChE Center for Chemical Process Safety, touched on the tragic West Texas Fertilizer plant explosion and shared his perspective on why smaller companies struggle with process safety and potential improvement. It is critical for management to understand they hold the livelihoods of their employees in their hands, he said. He also stressed that companies should put as much emphasis on learning operational and safety procedures as they do in filling out their timesheets. Every employee knows how to fill out his timesheet, so he gets paid, he said, because everyone wants to get paid. Doesnt everyone want to be safe? Sure. But it doesnt get the same level of rigor. Jerry L. Jones, a chemical engineering consultant with AIChE, kicked off the symposium with a Chemical Enterprise Risk Management Workshop on Tuesday, May 21, where he stressed the need for risk-based decision making in all environmental, health, safety and security (EHS&S) and quality management programs. The workshop concluded with a panel discussion on integrating process safety into chemical manufacturing operations.
