Santa Monica parish hosts first diocesan public safety forum

Community Safety Forum series to continue

Local civic leaders will be among panelists in each presentation. L.A. County Sherriff Lee Baca and City Attorney Mike Feuer participated in the Aug. 10 forum at St. Augustines Church, Santa Monica, and Congresswoman Lois Capps spoke at the Aug. 17 forum at St. Michaels Church, Isla Vista. Bishop Bruno has requested that each congregation send a team of at least two representatives clergy and lay to one of the forums. t takes a village to curb violence, according to Bishop Jon Bruno and others at the first in a series of diocesan regional public safety forums, held August 10 at St. Augustine bythe-Sea Church in Santa Monica. The bishops newest Hands in Healing initiative drew 75 people from congregations across the greater Los Angeles area and featured as guest speakers Sheriff Lee Baca and city attorney Mike Feuer. All agreed that education and community partnerships are key to deterring gun violence. Bruno launched the Hands in Healing Initiative (handsinhealing.ladiocese.org) in 2002, a humanitarian and educational effort to bring hope and healing to communities struggling with violence throughout the world. Today the Santa Monica College shootings loom strongly in my heart, Bruno told the gathering, about two miles from the June 11 shootings, where a former student shot and killed three people and injured others. He died of wounds after a gun battle with police. We want to inspire each and everyone of you to go out and start a new ministry or participate in an existing one, he said. A former police officer who was involved in gang diversion, he added: If we do nothing, nothings going to get done. We need to act as catalysts for change. Gun violence affects nearly everyone and entire communities on multiple levels; at least one-third of the forums attendees responded affirmatively when Feuer asked for a show of hands by those whose lives had been personally touched by gun violence. Both he and Baca, who has served as the Los Angeles County Sheriff for 14 years, said the faith community has a huge role to play in efforts to reduce violence. n reading the collect for today and the Gospel lesson I truthfully just scratched my head. How do we reconcile these words? Almighty God, you have given your only Son to be for us a sacrifice for sin, and also an example of godly life: Give us grace to receive thankfully the fruits of his redeeming work, and to follow daily in the blessed steps of his most holy life. Book of Common Prayer, Collects I came to bring fire to the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time? Luke 12:49, 56 Jesus led a godly life, and he wants us to do the same. The image that came to me as I thought about the collect and the Gospel reading was that wonderful phrase I used a great deal of the time when I was working

at the bank We need to light a fire under him/her in order to get a project done. For us in the Episcopal Church, it is to have a fire lit under us a Holy Spirit fire perhaps? Yes keep the Pentecost blaze going! What about interpreting the present time? This is rooted in prayer and faith, and understanding that the Holy Spirit is moving in and through and among us as She did that Pentecost Day. We are called as the disciples were to get out of that upper room and go and teach and preach and proclaim Christ crucified, died and risen. Thats not always easy for us some of us like to be more private about our faith. But others can see in your actions the godly life of Jesus. So let the Pentecost fire burn, let it burn under you, in you, through you, so that others may know Christ and make him known. Be on fire for Christ! ?

Bone marrow drive, art show come to Redondo Beach

hrist Church in Redondo Beach will hold a three-day Bone Marrow Drive, along with an Art Show and Sale, on Friday, Sept. 6 (6 - 9 p.m.), Saturday, Sept. 7 (12 noon - 5 p.m.), and Sunday, Sept. 8, 12 noon - 4 p.m. Artists will contribute 25% of their sales to help pay for the cost of doing bone marrow swabs; those tested do not have to pay. The drive is conducted by Be the Match. Potential donors must be in good health and between

the ages of 18 and 44. Results will be placed in a worldwide bone marrow matching system. The congregation has already held several such drives in honor of a young parishioner, Maya, whose life was saved by a bone marrow transplant.
