Curbside Recycling in Anchorage -- Two Providers

SWS
Available in SWS collection area Began in fall 2008 and will be fully phased in by fall 2014 Integrated curbside trash and recycling collection Volume-based variable rates (Pay As You Throw) based on trash size

Alaska Waste
Available in many parts of Alaska Wastes service area, including most parts of Anchorage, Eagle River, and Chugiak Began in 2008 with several new areas added since then Voluntary recycling is offered for an additional fee

You can reduce your trash disposal by up to 40%, depending on your purchasing habits, by properly using your recycling cart. All recyclables go into the blue recycling cart together

Cardboard Boxes

Corrugated cardboard

Only cardboard with an inner waffled layer No WAXED corrugated boxes No Fish boxes Flatten and break down bins to be sure they dont get stuck in the carts No food-contaminated cardboard (e.g., excessively dirty pizza boxes)

Aluminum and steel cans Steel cans are often called tin cans Food and beverage cans only Rinse all containers before recycling

Plastic Bottles

#1 PET bottles (look for this symbol on the bottom of the bottle) Soda & water bottles are most common Only containers with a screw top and neck -- Check for the neck! Rinse all containers

#2 HDPE plastic jugs (look for this symbol on the bottom of the bottle) Includes milk and detergent jugs Only containers with a screw top and neck -- Check for the neck! No containers that held hazardous materials (motor oil, pesticides etc.) Rinse all containers

Whats Not Recyclable in Your Cart?


Non-acceptable Plastics!
No plastics labeled with #3 - #7 No Styrofoam or cellophane No blisterpack packaging No plastic toys No diapers Check the Neck! No clamshell take-out containers even if they have a #1 No tubs (yogurt, sour cream etc.) even if they have a #2 No buckets (cat litter etc.)

Distributed to commodity markets


*MRF = Material Recovery Facility

This is the initial scenario. We plan to increase the quantity of recyclables so a MRF is feasible in Anchorage. The community needs to double the current rate of recycling for a local MRF.
