THE

LORD'S

WILL

We will be completing our second 4 year term in Decem ber, Lord willing we will be returning to the U.S. in De cember to report to our churches and to visit our families and friends. In preparation for our return we have a special prayer request. We are undecided and need to know the Lord's will as to our returning to Brasil for a third term of service. As you know we consider ourselves as technical missionaries. We are wondering if there is still a need for such missionaries. We lost the support of one of our churches because they did not feel that our working with a Christian Service camp was preaching the gospel.
We have received several invitations from other mission

aries and we have considered the possibility of taking a job in teaching or industry here in Brasil. Self support mission aries, as you know, are limited in the time they have for
church work.

Calixto

Filomeno

Filomeno Ludivico is only about 4 feet tall and you might think him mentally deficient. He is capable of reading and

reasoning but he dislikes physical labor.

With this in mind

it seemed very reasonable to him and his family when a wo man from a pentecostal church told them of a dream or pro

phecy that said Filomeno was to be an evangelist.

When

Filomeno applied to take the extension institute course I was

skeptical. I was sure he couldn't do the work but I didn't want to be guilty of being a "respecter of persons". I thought
( continued at top of page 3)

I should at least let him try. He tried and failed but I have a clear conscience about the matter, . .if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin.,." Fiiomeno continues regular in Bible school and church and I guess that is all he will ever do

but the Lord loves the simple church goer too. ( The man on the left is Calixto and I '11 tell you about him next time,)

TAGUATINGA

After the meeting with the Ex-priest (mentioned in our last letter) another meeting was held with Aurelino Mendes, direc tor of the Christian Institute of Goiania, preaching. This was a three day meeting and produced several decisions. Shortly after these meetings several members of our pastor's Bible school class were baptized. One teenag girl from my class was baptized recently. This girl is a good example of how the seed is planted, several people helped nuture the plant (includ ing her boy friend) and finally God gave the increase.

CAR!!!

Our Kombi needed a new set of tires in April. I've been using recaps but decided this time to try new ones to see if they give better mileage per cruseiro, A set of four was $70, It sounds cheap until you realize that 15 to 18, 000 miles is all you
can expect from them, I put the car in the shop the last of April to have an oil leak

fixed. Two weeks later I was hauling a load of brick to the camp when the motor began making noises of protest. Although the
warning light had not come on, the oil was so low that the motor ( continued at top of page 4)

was ruined. The new motor was about $400, They are allowing me to pay it off in 5 payments without interest charges. Inter
est would have been $40 but I convinced them that the motor fai lure was partly their fault. From what I read, you in the U.S. suffer with your automo biles and mechanics just as much as we here in Brasil. There fore I say "woe to him who driveth a car! "

CAMP

TIME

July is the traditional time for camp in Brasil.

Schools are

out for the month and it is not raining so the time is ideal. The first week was taken up by a meeting of missionaries
here on the camp grounds. Lyn Cleaveland from Uberlandia directed the junior week with 28 campers. The third week I directed the intermediate camp with just 15 and Anabor Macedo, the preacher of the Taguatinga church, directed the activities of 20 senior youth the last week of July. We tried some things that were new for camps here in Bra sil, We did not have teams for competition the intermediate week. We gave a long play record for a prize to encourage Bible memorization. Ann taught a music class to give them an idea of singing in parts. For both intermediate and senior week we had a work shop class on how to make posters for advertising church activities. In past years we've had a camp

fire only on the last night. This year we had one every even ing, Since it is chilly here in July, this really went over big, (continued on page 2 and 3)

Those of you who have worked in camps or have sent your children know that camp, like DVBS is a time that strengthens

our young people spiritually. We were really encouraged by the response of the campers this year. If the camp program can be maintained on a regular basis I think we can expect to see some very good results in the future. Unfortunately with our return to this work and even to Brasil in doubt, the future of the camp work is in doubt. Camps have been held in the past and will be held in the future but a full time worker seems to add something to the program and opera
tion, A full time worker is even more necessary here with all (continued at top of next page)

(continued fron:i bottom of last page) the improvements left to be done. Have you been praying for us and our decision about return ing to Brasil?

Calixto

Filomeno

has never complet ed his primary

school education

but he reads sufficiently for his own enjoyment. loves to talk,

He seems to

communicate real well with people of his educational level.

He

I don't think I have ever known anyone quite like

him. Literally, he will talk hours on end if there is someone to listen. I can't prove that Calixto is lazy but if someone (anyone) comes to visit he will drop his hoe in an instant, I thought I was doing him a favor when I made a contract to give him the production of the farm rather than a salary. It has proven too much responsibility for him. He seems to be afraid or not know how to get things done. He would be much happier earning less and having someone tell him each day what
he is to do. If Calixto stays on another year we will probably

have to go^^J^ck to the old system.

Calixto is a Christian and is never ashamed to testify for

Christ, He has taught, in his way, Bible School classes and has given devotionals before the congregation. Calixto tried
the extension institute course and didn't make it past the first

book.

The problem is that this courst requires a lot of read

ing and these fellows like Calixto and Filomeno do not read that well. They have the desire but the capacity just isn't there.
Pray for them.
