How to Analyze *.

GED data with Pajek Graphs Run Pajek (starting with version 17 - December 1997) using as input an ordinary *.GED -- genealogical exchange -- datafile. These graphs assign value 1 to male links and value 2 (and dotted lines) to female links. To create a 2D GED-graph 1. Click the left button opposite Network, click your *.GED file to open. 2. Click Net/Partition/Depth/Acyclic to create a partition by generations. 3. Click Draw/Draw Partitions and /Layers/in xy plane to see generations in graphics 4. Layers/Optimize layers in xy to minimize line crossing To Change Appearence to P-Graph FORMAT a. Click Options/Mark Vertices/Numbers b. Click Options/Mark Vertices/No Label (now you see dotted lines) c. Click Options/Size of Arrows/0 (now you see p-graph) To Capture graph in PAINTSHOP Pro 4.0(PSP) d. Open PSP, Click Capture//Setup/(let F11 be capture key) e. Click Capture/Start f. go back to Pajek image g. Click Color/Background/White h. Press F11 (or capture key) i. Click cursor upper left corner of graph j. Click cursor lower right corner of graph k. Your P-graph is ready to print in PSP 4.0!! To create a 3D GED-graph with SPRING EMBEDDING: steps 2-3 as before 3. Click Type of Layout/3D then: Layers/in z direction to add partition layers to the z dimension 4. Click Energy/Options/Starting Position/Given Z 5. Click Energy 2D Fruchterman-Reingold/...wait/Continue iterations 6. Spin in any of three directions by pressing keys X, Y, or Z: to see time dimension spin around x until the yellow points are all at the same level; then spin in y dimension to see the 3-dimensionality of the structure To see only the largest connected component 1. Click Net/Components/WEAK (creates a new partition) 2. Click Operations/Extract From Network/Partition 3. Click Net/Partitions/Depth/Acyclic 4. Click Draw/Draw PartitionS

To see only the largest bi- component (couples relinked through marrage) 1. Click the left button opposite Network, click your *.GED file to open. 2. Click Net/Components/BiComponents (creates hierarchy) 3. Click Info/Hierarchy to see frequency of bi-components of different size. Note the largest one. 4. DoubleClick Window 5 (Hierarchy) to bring up a new Window showing bi-component clusters 5. Click +Root in this new Window to expand the complete list of bicomponents. Note the number of the one with the largest size, for example. 6. Click Hierarchy/Extract Cluster, and give the Cluster Number that you want 7. Click Operations/Extract From Network/Cluster 8. Click Draw (see Draw operations above) 9. Click Net/Partitions/Depth/Acyclic to create a partition by generations. 10. Click Draw/Draw Partitions 11. Click Layers/in z Direction to fix generations in Z dimension 12. Click Energy 2D Fruchterman-Reingold/...wait/Continue iterations 13. Spin in any of three directions by pressing or holding the keys X, Y, Z Export to Graphics formats 1. Click Export/EPS or PS or VRML to create a graphics file to save your output. 2. The circles for vertices in 3D get smaller in size as they recede, but this does not come through unless you Export/WYSIWYG (or use a text editor on the file and change the elipses marked 5.00 in diameter to a new value). Draw/Export/OptionsOnOff will cause options to change if you change size of vertices. VRML can be viewed on the web using the Cosmo Player plugin for your browser or in viewers like HiJaakPro. Pajek will also read the network as a set of individuals as vertices (circles for females squares for males), with arcs (directeed) links to parents, and edges (undirected links) between spouses. The bicomponents of these graphs are much more complex, including nuclear families AND marriage cycles. To switch to this format in PAJEK, use Option/ReadWrite/GEDCOM-PGraph. Use Net/Partition/Depth/Genealogy instead of Net/Partition/Depth/Acyclic.
