ElectricDoubleLayer
Electricaldoublelayer: Thestructureofcharge accumulationandchargeseparationthatalways occursattheinterfacewhenanelectrodeis immersedintoanelectrolytesolution. Theexcesschargeontheelectrodesurfaceis compensatedbyanaccumulationofexcessions oftheoppositechargeinthesolution. Theamountofchargeisafunctionofthe electrodepotential.Thisstructurebehaves essentiallyasacapacitor. Thereareseveraltheoreticalmodelsthatdescribe thestructureofthedoublelayer.Thethreemost commonlyusedonesaretheHelmholtzmodel, theGouyChapmanmodel, andtheGouy ChapmanSternmodel.

Commonlyusedsurgicalalloyscontainhighlyreactivemetals(i.e.with highnegativeelectrodepotential)suchastitanium,aluminum,chromium Becauseofhighreactivity,thesemetalsreactwithO2toforman imperviousoxidelayerfirmlyadherenttothemetalsurface,i.e. passivationlayer!!

Themostcommontypeoffrettingiscausedbyvibration.Theprotective filmonthemetalsurfacesisremovedbytherubbingactionandexposes fresh,activemetaltothecorrosiveactionoftheatmosphere.
