ANGALVAN'S aircraft was in the air.
Monty Monkey, Kalu Bear, Princy Deer,
Lambu Giraffe, Bablu Pig and Dubku
Tortoise were very happy to be on board as its
passengers. Viru Tiger was the pilot of the aircraft.
He too was enjoying with children. Sometimes
children would sing songs and sometimes they
would laugh on a joke. Dubku Tortoise's happiness
knew no bounds. He had never dreamt that he
would ever fly in the sky.
After some time suddenly, a flock of birds hit
the aircraft. The aircraft shook. Pilot tried to control
it somehow but with the bang one of the engines

 caught fire. Children got
scared and started shout-
ing with fright. Pilot Viru
Tiger gestured them to
stay calm and be
courageous.
“What will happen
now? We will die. If I
knew this, I would not
have boarded the plane. It
was better to crawl on
earth. I feel like jumping
down head on,” Dubku
Tortoise shivered with
nervousness.
“No, don't do that. The
pilot will surely do
something for us. He will
not let us die like that. If
you jump you will die,”
Monty Monkey explained.
On the other hand,
pilot Viru did not know
what to do. He was unable

Lake The fire was spreading
fast. It appeared that the

reduced to ashes. Pilot looked around left and right
in search of some water body. His eyes fell on a
lake in Mangalvan.
'Why don't I land the aircraft in the lake?
Children will be saved. Some days back similarly, a
plane was force landed in a river and all passengers
were saved. I too must try that. The lake does not
have too much water for that matter,' the pilot
thought and slowly brought down the aircraft
safely.
Dubku Tortoise quickly jumped into the water
and swam off. He heaved a sigh of relief on being
saved. Pilot and the other passengers too came out
safe.
Seeing an aircraft in the lake the animals of the
jungle were shocked. They all crowded near the
lake. King of the jungle, lion, too reached there.
“What is this? Why have you landed the plane in
the lake?” the king asked the pilot.
Pilot narrated everything. “On seeing the lake I
had some hope. I had read a news of a plane
landing in a river. Inspired by that I landed the
aircraft in the lake and saved the children.”
“Well done,” the king patted the pilot on his
shoulders. All the animals present there praised the
pilot.
The saved children happily said, “Today we are
alive due to pilot uncle's quick wit. We had lost
hopes of life too. We remember seeing the aircraft
land in water on TV but we did not remember
anything in moment of danger. Luckily, pilot uncle
remembered it and acted accordingly.”
The next day, pilot Viru Tiger was honoured by
hundreds of animals in a meeting. All were singing
his praises.
Viru spoke in the meeting, “We
must not be nervous in times of
trouble but look out for a solution of
the problem. We must take a lesson
from incidents and happenings.
“I am happy that I have saved the
children. I had a tortoise with me. He
was travelling for the first time. If he
died I would have felt guilty.”
Everyone had a hearty laugh at
the tortoise and the meeting
dispersed. ●

 Cheeku’s Cleverness

I
T WAS a bright morning and Jacky Dog came
out for a morning walk. Suddenly, a car in high
speed crossed him. Jacky was thrown into the
bushes.
Appu Elephant saw this happening in front of
him. He came running near the bushes. He saw
Jacky lying near there, groaning with pain. Appu
took Jacky with him home.
Appu Elephant was a famous trader of
Champakvan.
Showing his room to Jacky, Appu said, “You
must rest at my place for 2-4 days. You can go when
you are all right.”
Cheeku Rabbit was Appu’s security guard. He
kept a watch on Appu's house.
When he saw Jacky in Appu's room, he felt
something wrong was going on.
Cheeku informed Appu about it, “Sir, I feel
Jacky's accident was a planned one. He wanted to
get inside your house.
“I feel Jacky is a thief and has come here with
the aim of stealing.”
“Inform the police immediately,” Appu ordered.
“Sir, but by handing over Jacky to the police we
can only catch Jacky.
“I feel there is a gang working behind him. It is
more important to catch the people of the gang.”
“What should be done for that?”

 “I have an idea,” Cheeku explained his plan
to Appu.
At night Jacky’s mobile rang.
“Hallo, I am Jackal speaking. Did you find
anything?” someone spoke from the other end.
“I don't think we can get anything here.”
“How can you say that?”
“I have opened the treasure box and seen.
Nothing is there. There is another box whose lock
is not opening.”
“Don't you have the master key?”
“Master key is not working here.”
“What to do now?”
“Do one thing. Come over with our other
friends.”
“But how can we come inside?”
“Don't worry about that. Just jump over the wall
of the bungalow. I am keeping the rare door of the
house open. You can all come inside from there.

on the left.”

on mobile,
Jackal with
his accomplice
Fox reached
inside the
garden of Appu Elephant after jumping the rear
wall of his bungalow.
Then opening the second door from the left, he
landed inside.
Reaching inside the room Jackal and the Fox saw
that Jacky was sleeping on a cot. The jackal got
angry. He kicked Jacky hard.
“Have you come here to rest on the seth's bed,”
Jacky did not get up even after 2 kicks.
By then the lights of the room lighted up. Police
was standing in front.
Seeing the police Jackal and Fox tried to flee but
were caught.
Inspector Chatur Singh said to Cheeku, “How
did you know that Jacky had come to Appu's place
to commit theft.”
“All the rooms of the bungalow have CC
cameras. When I saw that instead of resting, Jacky
was trying to open the treasure boxes, I understood
that there was something fishy going on.”
“When I told this to my master Appu, he told me
to call the police.
“Then I guessed that Jacky alone could not do

this work. He must be surely having someone with
him. By informing we can only catch Jacky. We
must nab his accomplices too. I guessed that his
friends would surely get in touch with him at night.
I got an idea.”
“Then what did you do?” Chatur Singh asked.
“I gave Jacky sleeping pills in hot milk. He fell
asleep after drinking it. At night his friend Jackal
contacted him.
“That was the time I called him with the excuse
of opening the treasure box.”
“Wonderful, you have done very well,”
Inspector Chatur Singh congratulated.
By then Jacky woke up. Seeing the police, jackal
and the fox, Jacky understood that their misdeeds
were out. They confessed their crime. Police
arrested all the 3 and took them away. ●
 Intelligent Kishan
A potter Kishan lived in Rampur village. He had
a donkey. He used his donkey to cart merchandise
from the town and sold it in the village to earn his
living for his family.
One day, when it was a night time, somebody
stole his donkey. Ramu searched for his donkey
everywhere but he did not find his donkey. Without
his donkey Ramu was unable to earn his
livelihood. He was compelled to make plan to buy
a donkey. He borrowed some money from the local
moneylender and went to a cattle market.
In the cattle market he found a person selling
his own donkey. Ramu identified his donkey and
said, “This is my donkey. You have stolen my
donkey. You have to give my donkey back to me.
Otherwise I will raise an alarm.”
 “And who says that this is your donkey? I have
raised this donkey since he was a calf. You are
telling a gross lie and you want to snatch my
donkey,” replied the person to Ramu.
By then the others in the market gathered
around as they heard the commotion. “Do both of
you have any proof to prove your contention?”
asked one of the persons in the crowd.
Kishan was intelligent. He tied a piece of cloth
on the eyes of the disputed donkey. He then said,
“My donkey is blind in one of the eye. If this
person is claiming the donkey, then he should
know with which eye the donkey cannot see.”
The donkey seller was puzzled. He had no idea
that the donkey has one, which had no sight. But
still he had to counter Ramu's contention.When the
crowd asked him to answer, he said, “My donkey
cannot see with his left eye.”
Kishan's trick worked. He said, “Friends, he is
caught on the wrong foot. My donkey can see
through his both eyes. You yourself can see it.”
Ramu removed the bandage from the donkey's
eyes.
The crowd saw that the donkey indeed can see
with both the eyes. The thief was caught and was
handed over to the police.
Ramu got his donkey back because of his
intelligence.

UMPY MONKEY’S father bought a big house
in a new colony outside Champakvan. The
entire family lived there.
That day, early in the morning Jumpy went out
for a walk.
“Wish the colony gets good roads. The rains
have spilled so much muck on the roads,” Jumpy
was thinking.
Suddenly, he saw a big crowd in front of
Champu Leopard's house. Inspector Blacky Bear’s
jeep was also parked there.
“What has happened here, uncle?” Jumpy asked
Blacky. Jumpy was his father's friend.
“A robbery has taken place at night here. The
thieves locked Champu and his family in a room
and carried away all the cash and jewellery with
them,” Blacky informed.
“Did no one see the robbers?”
“No Jumpy, now you may go. I have to
investigate the case.”
Jumpy had just moved out when his eyes fell on
some drops of diesel there.
“Uncle…” Jumpy called Blacky to say, “Look
carefully. I think the robbers came here surely in a
vehicle. Some drops of diesel are seen on the road.

Their fuel tank must be leaking.”
“You are right but…..”
“One more thing to be noticed. Look at the tyre
marks in front of the tree. The robbers must have
come from Champakvan. Then after committing
theft they took a U-turn and returned….”
Now Blacky too became interested in Jumpy's
spying. He observed the tyre marks carefully and
said, “Good Jumpy, you have already produced 2
proofs before me. They are hundred per cent marks
of the tyres clearly visible on the wet sand after the
rains.”
 At that very time Champu's neighbour Nauty
Deer came running and said, “Jumpy's guess about
the diesel car is absolutely correct. Yesterday night
I got up thirsty. I went to take water bottle from the
fridge when I heard the sound of a car engine. It
was surely diesel's as its sound was totally
different from that of petrol cars.”
“Well, so you had seen the car?”
“Only the colour. It was an old car, light blue in
colour. I could not see the number,” Nauty avered.
“But you should have seen the numbers.”
 “I am afraid I could barely see the car for 2-4
seconds from my window. I did not pay attention to
the numbers.”
“Oh, only if we could get the numbers…..”
Blacky lamented.
Jumpy shouted and called Blacky. “What is
the matter, Jumpy? Have you found any other
proof?”
“Surely, uncle, I have seen the 4 tyre marks very
carefully. Out of them 3 marks are absolutely
similar but the design and model of third mark is
different. You too can see.”

L ooking at the muck Blacky said, “Good Jumpy,

you are right. This will facilitate our work. We
will soon find the robbers. You can be a good
detective when you grow up because you have a
keen eye for searching for proofs,” Blacky patted
his back.
From that day onwards Blacky started meeting
all garage workers. Finally, he reached the garage of
Bantu Rabbit mechanic. Bantu's garage was famous
in the entire Champakvan.
Blacky asked him, “Does a light blue diesel car
like this come to your garage whose tank is leaking
and whose 3 tyres are different to one of them?”
Bantu pondered for a while. Then said,
“Aa…yes, yes, sir. I have many times repaired the
leakage in its tank. I had even suggested a change
of the tank but he did not listen. He just got it
welded.”
“Yes, yes, correct. Whose car is it?” Blacky was
excited.
“It is Jhagru Jackal's car.”
“Jhagru! That crook! He has not improved even

after 4 years punishment. He was just out of the jail
some days back. I have his detailed record,” Blacky
returned happily.
That very night Blacky rang up Jumpy and said,
“Hello Jumpy, we have been able to nab Jhagru
who committed theft in Champu's house with one
of his accomplice. Both have accepted their crime of
committing theft with masks on. Champu's things
have been confiscated from his house.”
“Wow uncle, you have shown dexterity in
catching the thief,” Jumpy congratulated.
“I have not done much. It is you who has used
your detective brain.”
“Thanks Jumpy. Without your efforts, god
knows how I would have been able to catch them,”
Blacky smiled. ●

“S
UCH A big bird!” Ankit said in surprise,
on seeing the ostrich’s nest. His friends
too were seeing this huge bird with wide
open eyes. Till now, they had only seen an ostrich
in photographs.

 All the friends had come with Ankit's
grandfather to see the Kanpur Zoo. They
were having their summer holidays so they had
planned to go visiting around and enjoy
themselves.
“Yes, ostrich is the largest bird in the existing
living birds. It is the native of Africa. It cannot fly
because of its big size,” grandfather informed the
children.
“It is very heavy,” Lokesh said.
“Yes, the ostrich weighs upto 133 kg and its
height is about 2.4 metres. It is a very powerful
bird. It can easily run with 2 persons on its back,”
the children were amazed at this piece of
information by grandfather.
“That means its egg also must be very big?”
Ruchi asked.
“Yes, its egg weighs upto 1.4 kg. Its nest can
accommodate nearly 18 eggs of a hen.”
“Grandfather, as you said, ostrich is the biggest
living bird, then which is the smallest bird?” Atul
wished to know.

“T he smallest bird in the world is the

humming bird. It is found in Cuba and
Pines Island. It is 5.7 cm long, with its beak and tail
constituting half its length. It weighs 1.6 grams and
lays very small white-coloured eggs,” grandfather
said.
All the children were listening very eagerly to
grandfather.
“Even albatross is a big bird. Is it bigger
than an ostrich?” after a little pondering, Ankit
asked.
“Yes, you are right. In flying birds albatross is

the biggest. But not bigger than an ostrich. It is
a sea bird.
“Their wings spread is about 3.30 metres. It can
be compared to a small aircraft.”
“Why so, grandfather?” Ruchi wanted to know.
“Because it requires open space to rise up. It
runs for a distance spreading its wings and then
like an aircraft rises up slowly. Even while getting
down it looks as if an aircraft is descending,”
grandfather said.
“I have read in magazines that these birds often
follow planes.”
“Yes, these birds are expert in following an
aircraft because they get food thrown from
planes,” grandfather informed.
“Children, can you tell me which is the most
dangerous bird in the world?”
Squatting on the grass in the lawn, grandfather
asked.
“No, can birds be harmful too?” children were
surprised.
“Yes, Cassowari is the most dangerous bird in
the world. It weighs almost 10 kg. It is found in
New Guinea and North Australia. It can run with a
speed of 48 km per hour. The inside of its
thumb claw is a knife-like claw by which it easily
tears apart the stomach of man,” grandfather
informed.
“Then surely it is a very dangerous bird,” Ruchi
was frightened but all others with grandfather
laughed. They were all very happy.
They had got good information along with
entertainment. ●

 Minki’s Roller Skates

“Y
OU HAVE again come late, Minki. Go
and stand outside the class,” teacher cat
ordered Minki.
Because of his sluggishness, Minki Tortoise
would always get punished in class. It was almost
evening by the time he returned home.
“Minki look, your uncle has come from town,”
Minki's mother said.
“What is the matter, Minki? You are appearing
sad. Did you have a fight with your friend in
school?” uncle asked, making Minki sit next to
him.

 “No uncle, as I reached school late, the teacher
punished me by making me stand out and made me
write 50 times that I will not come late to school.
All children tease me by calling me lazy and ‘late
kate’.”
Mother intervened, “His school being too far, he
does get late however early he may start.”
“Does not matter, start 16 minutes early from
tomorrow. Right now let us go out to eat ice-cream,”
uncle suggested and Minki was happy again.
One day, after a week when Minki returned
home from school, mother handed him over a big
box.
“What is this, mother?” Minki asked.
“Your uncle from town has sent this for you.”
Minki opened the box with eagerness. To his
surprise he saw a pair of skates.
“He has sent this letter to you too,” mother gave
a letter to him. It was written, “Dear Minki, I am
sending roller skates for you. With them you cannot
only reach school early but anywhere else too. The
procedure for using it is given in the accompanying
paper.”

R eading the paper Minki was too happy. “Now I

will reach school the earliest. Then nobody will
call me 'late kate'.”
Minki put on the skates. The whole night he
kept practising. In the morning, when he rolled off
with them to school, all animals watched him in
surprise.
“What kind of shoes are these?” Rikki Wolf
asked surprisingly to grocer bear.
Today Minki had reached school before time. He
opened the skates and kept them outside the class.

The rollers were a matter of inquisitiveness for
each and everyone.
“What is this, Minki?” Rinu Giraffe asked.
“My uncle has given me roller skates. Now I
will come before you to school,” he smiled and
answered.
“Hm… now I will not have to send you outside
the class,” teacher cat said, looking at the skates.
After a couple of days, not seeing his skates
outside the class Minki was upset, “Where are my
skates?”
All the friends searched the whole school but
did not find them anywhere.
“It seems someone has stolen them,” Minki had
tears in his eyes, when Minki’s said this, putting
his hands on Minu's shoulder.

 After 2 days, The Jungle Times had the news of
terror being spread by some rogue wearing roller
skates.
Suddenly, Binoo Jackal wearing roller skates
would come in the jungle from somewhere and
after snatching peoples' purse, cash, watch, chain
and other things, would vanish.
The animals could not catch him however fast
they would run behind him.
“He is using my roller skates to commit theft,”
Minki said, throwing the paper on the table.

O n Sunday, Minki was returning with his

mother from the market when he saw panic
everywhere. They saw that Binoo Jackal was
running away on skates after snatching somebody's
purse.
Minki, in a minute, thought how to stop him. He
spilled all the vegetables on the way by breaking
open the basket.
Binoo, coming with speed, got puzzled at seeing
vegetables coming rolling on the street and he fell
by his face. Before he could get up, all the people
around surrounded him and beat him black and
blue.
“Well done Minki,” arresting Binoo, Inspector
Gendamal congratulated.
“He had created a lot of terror. We could not
catch him because of the skates. You will get
rewarded from the king's side for your bravery and
intelligence.”
“Get me back my roller skates. This will be my
reward. Since he had stolen my skates I got late to
school and got punished,” when Minki said,
everyone had a hearty laugh. ●

INO MONKEY had
just returned from
Sweden where he put
up in Ice Hotel. Everything
in the Ice Hotel was made of
ice—ice room, ice bed, ice
table. But the amazing thing
T ino’s about the place was that the
hotel was warm from inside.
Tino did not feel cold at all.
Igloo Ice Hotel was actually
unique.
When Tino returned from
Sweden to Chandanvan, the
weather was quite cold here.
Tino did not have a house of

his own in Chandanvan. He lived on trees and slept
on them.
The monkey was highly troubled by the cold.
He thought, ‘How nice it would have been if
Chandanvan too had an ice hotel. Winters would
have passed off easily.’
But it was useless thinking of an ice hotel in
Chandanvan. Tino, suddenly, hit upon an idea, ‘If
not an ice hotel, an igloo sure can be made in
Chandanvan.’
He quickly collected lots of ice from the
mountains and started building an igloo. Soon, the
igloo was ready.
Tino started living in it.

O ne day, Cheeku Rabbit went to roam the

jungle. He was shocked to see what he saw.
“What am I seeing. An igloo in the jungle!”
Tino saw Cheeku Rabbit. He came out of the
igloo and said, “Come Cheeku, you are welcome in
the igloo.”
“So, you have made this igloo, Tino. It is
wonderful and very warm also. Can I sleep in your
igloo for a night?” asked Cheeku.
“Yes, why not? But you will have to pay a rent
for it,” Tino said.
“Ok I will,” Cheeku agreed.
Cheeku stayed that night as Tino's guest in the
igloo.
Soon, the news about Tino’s igloo spread in the
entire Chandanvan. Other animals of the jungle
also started asking for staying in the igloo.
Blacky Bear, Minmin Goat, Simbu Jackal, Rinki
Vixen, King Peelu Singh and other animals of
Chandanvan came to stay in igloo as guest one by

 one. Tino charged a hefty sum of
money from them. He then
thought, ‘If I advertise about my
igloo in the newspaper, I can make
more money.’
The next day, Chandanvan Times
had the ad of igloo in it, “Enjoy ice
hotel in Chandanvan. Stay in Tino’s
Igloo.”
From that day, animals from nearby jungles too
came to stay in it. Tino started making money.
Summers set in. The sun shone brightly in the
sky.
One day, Tino went to the market. In the
meantime his igloo melted and became water in the
heat. When he returned there was no igloo. A small
pond had replaced it.
Seeing his igloo vanish, Tino started crying
badly, “Oh my igloo!”
But it was no use crying. Now an
igloo could only be built in
winters.
Poor Tino was once
again compelled to
live on trees. ●

ALU FOX had
just arrived in
Chamapkvan
and taken a big house in
a posh colony. He lived
Inter esting with grandeur having
expensive things in his
house. A glittering new
Par ties car stood at his door.
In Champakvan
nobody had any idea as
to what Kalu did. But
by Dr Rajiv Gupta everyone was in the
impression that he was
a big officer.
On their arrival Kalu
Fox and his wife Vimky
Vixen started making friends with animals of rich
families.
It was a weird way of making friends. They
would often host big parties at their place and
invite famous people with their families over the
feast. The parties were interesting and well hosted.
Guests enjoyed them. They generally went on till
late night.
“It seems you are too fond of parties Mrs Kalu,”
asked engineer Manki Monkey's wife one day.
“Surely, Mrs Manki. We make new friends this
way which spread happiness in life,” Vimky
replied.
“You are right. Your parties are surely very
nice,” keeping a rasgulla in her plate Pinky
replied.
Vimky smiled and then got busy welcoming
other animals.

O ne day, when Dr Jeru Giraffe returned home at

midnight after the party, he realised that the
main lock of his house was broken and almost all
the expensive things of the house missing.
He lodged a complaint in the police but could
not trace the robbers. They were helpless.
A series of thefts kept occurring in Champakvan
and were not stopping. After Dr Jeru’s house, it was
the rich Sonu Donkey's house that was burgled.
Then the next day it was the house of big trader
Bhalu Ram.
Robbers took away all the expensive things
from his house. Police too could not get a clue
about who the thief was.
On the other hand Kalu Fox was upset about
animals not coming to his party because of

burglaries. Then came the new year. Kalu Fox made
great arrangements for the new year's party with
great enthusiasm. He called for an orchestra too this
time.
Animals were attracted towards music and
orchestra. Inspector Chetu Leopard was also
present in the party. He had been invited by Kalu
Fox.
“Now we must leave,” the famous diamond
trader Gendu Hippo and his wife Ginny begged
leave.
“Why so soon? The orchestra has just started
playing. Enjoy it for some time,” Kalu Fox
requested.
“No, I have to rush. Actually, in a hurry to come
to the party I have left diamonds worth Rs 10 crores
out of my treasury. Thieves might just strike,”
Gendu was nervously apprehensive.
“How do thieves know that you have
forgotten the diamonds outside. Don't
panic. Enjoy the orchestra. Am I right,
inspector?” looking at Inspector
Chetu Leopard, Kalu said.
“Yes, don't worry till I am
there Mr Gendu. Enjoy the
orchestra,” reiterated
Chetu.
Gendu agreed,
“Fine, if you insist I will stay back.”
“Thanks,” said Kalu and moved on to take care
of the other guests.
Chetu Leopard was constantly keeping a watch
on Kalu and following him. He saw that Kalu was
talking to someone on his mobile standing in a
corner. Seeing this, inspector smiled warily.
The party was going on and all were enjoying
the orchestra. Suddenly, Chetu Leopard's mobile
rang. He picked up his set and then walking up to
the stage took the mike in his hands.
“Friends, you will be happy to know that the
thief committing robbery in your houses have been
caught. He was trying to steal the diamonds in
Mr. Gendu's house,” he announced.
 A complete silence prevailed everywhere.
“Who is the thief?” Some animals asked. “The
biggest rouge of Champakvan Luccha Jackal and
his accomplices. Police have caught them and is
bringing them here very soon. You will be
thoroughly entertained,” Chetu Leopard said
looking at Kalu Fox and his wife.
Kalu Fox and his wife were shocked and started
moving towards the door.
“Where are you going Mr and Mrs Kalu?” said
Chetu quickly closing the door.
“No, no, nowhere,” both stammered.

P olice immediately reached with Luccha Jackal

and his accomplices. He spoke the truth when
Inspector Chetu gave him 2 slaps. “Sir, I am a small
thief. My boss is this Kalu Fox. He calls rich
animals to his house for a party and then orders me
on the mobile whose house to burgle,” Luccha
Jackal enumerated.
Hearing Luccha Jackal all were stunned. Now
everyone was understanding the secret behind the
interesting parties and burglaries.
“Sir, he is telling lies,” Lalu Fox shouted.
“Quiet. How does Luccha Jackal know that the
diamond trader has diamonds worth 10 crores in
his house. This was just told by me on his
insistance.” When Chetu hit Kalu on his back with
a stick, Kalu and his wife Vimky were terrified.
Both knew that they had been nabbed by Chetu
Inspector. Now there was no way to escape. So they
accepted their crime.
On searching their houses, lots of burgled
things were confiscated. They were put behind
bars. ●

 True Happiness

C
HICHI SQUIRREL was always sad, though
there did not seem any apparent reason for
it. Her parents loved her a lot. She had an
elder sister too, named Chuchu. All lived happily
together.
For a few days, Chichi felt that her house is not
as big as her friends'. She did not have any
expensive things like them in her house. They did
not possess a car like her friends' and so they had
to walk down everywhere.

 She had conveyed to her sister Chuchu about
her reason for remaining sad. The elder sister
explained her the worthlessness of material
things and that these things don't give an identity
to anyone. She advised her to be a good squirrel
and do good in studies. But Chichi was not
satisfied.
Chichi remained sad in her class too and her
teacher Lily Vixen could well notice this. She liked
Chichi and so could not see her sad.
One day, Lily went to Chuchu's class and asked
the reason for her sadness. Lily knew that a good
teacher is a one who not only pays attention
towards the studies of her students but teach them
realties of life too. She made a plan.

T he next day Lily announced in the class that

they had organised a drawing competition on
the occasion of Children's Day and that it was
necessary for all to participate.
The next day, children reached school excited. In
the competition children had to draw something on
the topic ‘My Family’ on one side of the sheet and
something on 'Happy Family' on the other.
Every time a similar competition was held in the
school, Chichi took the first prize but this time the
topic was such that it touched her heart and she did
not feel like drawing anything. But as it was
compulsory, she started drawing.
For drawing 'My Family' she made a small house

with her parents and sister but portrayed herself
sitting outside in the garden under a tree all by
herself.
In the category of 'Happy Family' she drew
her friends’ homes, showing someone sitting in a
car and smiling and someone in a rich decorated
room.
Teacher announced that she will declare the
result of the competition the next day.
Next day, everyone was eager to know the
results. This was the first time that Chichi was not
eager to know which position was she on. She did
not expect one too.
First prize went to Moni Monkey, second to Tina
Giraffe and the third to Chinky Maina. But she was
surprised to see that all the 3 winners had drawn
Chichi's family in the 'Happy Family' section. First,
she did not believe this but the drawing was there
in front of her eyes.

 When she went to congratulate them, Tina and
Chinky both said together, "We have got the prize
because we have shown your family as a happy
family. We love seeing all of you together. Your
parents love both your sisters so much and do
everything for you in such an organised way."
Moni too came there. He repeated the same
thing.
Chichi was highly surprised to listen to them.
Lily Madam came there and asked Chichi to
meet her after the school. The squirrel was scared
as to why has the teacher called her.

A fter school she went to Lily Madam. The

teacher was sitting with Chichi's drawing open
in front of her.
She asked Chichi why was she sitting quiet and
secluded in her drawing.
When Chichi did not reply anything, the teacher
said, "On seeing your 'Happy Family' drawing it is
understood that according to you a happy family is
that which is rich. But I have called you to explain
that it is not necessary that money brings in all
happiness.
“Sometimes, even a rich man is not at peace with
himself. Being happy or sad is a state of mind.
Money is not always there with us. Sometimes, it is
there in abundance and sometimes there is nothing.
Therefore, learn to be happy with whatever you
have. You must have realised that all your friends
consider you the happiest."
All the way back Chichi kept pondering over
her teacher's words. She understood that she was
the happiest child in the world and went home
happily. ●

HE LIBRARY in the town had a number of
books lined up neatly. Students of schools
and colleges came to read books there and
after reading returned home in the evening.
One of the cupboards in the library that was
kept in a corner had not been opened since long
and so a lot of dust had settled on it. The reader
surely noticed the cupboard but did not open and
see it thinking that it may be having some books
not of use.
“What is there in this cupboard, sir?” One day,
a college girl asked the library incharge.
On hearing someone ask about them the books
in the cupboard were charged with excitment. It
gave them the idea that now they too would be
taken out and be read.

Teaching of a Cupboard
“I do not know as I am new here. Maybe, the
books in it are of no use. That is why the cupboard
is always closed.” Hearing this from the incharge
the girl moved to the other section.
The books inside again became hopeless and
their faces hung.
One of the books spoke, “What do they know
what good things are written on my pages. If
somebody reads me, they will only leave me after
reading me fully.”
“Don't praise yourself. Who has the time to read
stories and legends? You are redundant now. Today
is mine,” science book said to the fiction book.
“You both are of past times. This is my age.

Things don't work without me,” the computer
guide soon jumped into the discussion. With this
statement of hers, silence prevailed for some time.
Suddenly, a book of poems got excited.
“Hundred years ago also poetry was read and
today also we are fresh and new as ever. We are
different.” She had not completed her sentence
when the history book pushed her away.
Now a heated argument started between them.

than the other.
By then a rat entered the cupboard from
somewhere. He was enjoying the books arguing
madly.
“I am feeling very hungry brother,” the rat said

“Oh, someone save
me from this rat,” the
story book screamed in
pain.
“So, now your pride
has licked dust. In
little time you will be
reduced to ashes and
your existence is over,”
the science book
clapped with
happiness.
Seeing the new
book, the rat jumped
on the science book. In
no time he ate away all
the pages of the
science book. Science
book started crying.
Nobody came to save
him. How could
anybody come? Till
now she was happy seeing others in trouble.
Till today I have not seen someone more foolish
than you. Instead of fighting against the enemy,
you are harming each other,” the cupboard shouted
at the books.
The books realised that the cupboard was right.
They exchanged glances, “What do we do now? We
cannot harm the rat.”
“Stop fighting amongst yourself and think of
saving yourself from the rat or he will chew you
away in one day,” the cupboard warned them.

 When the books, who thought themselves great,
could not think of anything the cupboard
suggested. “But you will be harmed if you do like
that, we do not want to harm you.”
“Don't worry about me. Do as I say. Don't forget
that unity is strength. Your enemy— the rat— is
taking advantage of your split. This is the only way
of teaching him a lesson.”
The books understood. They together applied
their full strength and the cupboard fell flat on the
ground. All this happened so soon that the rat did

not get time to escape. He died under the cupboard.
The glass of the cupboard broke. All the books
came out and fell. Hearing the sound, all the
students present in the library came running.
“Wow! These books are of great use,” all the
children picked up books of their choice and
started reading them.
The faces of the books brightened up finding
readership and gaining importance. This was the
first time somebody praised them. They were able
to breath outside the cupboard.

S eeing bright faces of the books the cupboard

forgot her pain and smiled. She was happy to
see that the books had got over their fights and
become aware of their strength which lay in unity.
“Thanks a lot to you. We will always be
indebted to you for showing us the right path. We
will never forget you.”
The books came to the cupboard and said, “We
promise that now we will never quarrel.”
“Stay happy wherever you are. Live together
and start a new life,” the cupboard blessed them
and the books smiled with hope. ●

Vixen, Reba Rabbit, Manku Monkey formed a group.
Clothes were stitched by Zebra Chand tailor. Animals
of Champakvan were not used to wearing clothes.
“It is different in manland. We have to wear clothes
and go,” Shamsher Singh ordered.
Shamsher put on his shervani. Gajju Elephant
wore a high neck coat. Zebu Zebra wore a striped suit
and a bow tie. Bholu Bear liked a long white kurta.
Ashu Donkey wore a pant and shirt with an American
cap. Lali Fox dressed up in a jeans and top. Rabi
Rabbit was looking for hood in a frilled frock. Manku
Monkey wore a jacket.
Manku Monkey was well informed about
manland. He would hop and jump and reach manland
very often.
“Let us have hot buns for breakfast,” Manku
suggested. Shamsher Singh had not tasted buns. He
quickly agreed. All got down to a highway motel.
The buns are really tasty,” Gajju Elephant
immediately ate away many buns.
“They are spicy,” Shamsher too liked them.
After the buns all sipped tea.
“We want to shop,” Lali and Zebra desired.
“There is a mall nearby,” Manku informed.
The mall was crowded but they did not have

difficulty in shopping. Gajju Elephant found it
difficult climbing the escalator. But he enjoyed it.
Reba Rabbit bought some cosmetics.
There was a cinema hall in the mall too. Gefu
quickly bought tickets. It was a children’s film which
showed children with diseases. Watching the film, all
of them cried.
Ashu Donkey was hungry. As he looked at the
watch, it was 2 o’clock. Manku took them to a Punjabi
restaurant.
“Lay the food,” Gajju Elephant ordered.
The menu had all, soup, tandoori chicken, biryani,

and kulche. The table
was fully laid in
minutes.
Shamsher Singh
praised, “Manland has
tasty food.”
It was lazing around
time after lunch. They
felt like having a siesta.

they had to return to
Champakvan.
“We will leave after
eating golgappas,”
Manku Monkey liked
golgappas a lot.
“I want to eat ice-cream too,” Reba Rabbit insisted.
Shamsher Singh had heard a lot of its praise. His
mouth started watering. All ate golgappas first. Then
was the turn of ice-cream.
“We will call for samosas and golgappas from
manland,” Shamsher Singh had become too fond of
them.
“Even ice-cream…..” Rabi whispered in his ears.
The entire gang hoped on to the ropeway.
“We will strength our relations. We will always be
cordial,” Shamsher Singh announced on returning to
Champakvan. ●

ING SHER Singh and his queen Sherry
were worried about their son Sheru. It was
not that Sheru was naughty, but the real
worry for his parents was that Sheru was extremely
lazy. He never worked on his own. His parents had
advised Sheru number of times to mend his ways,
but it had no impact on his deaf ears.
One day, the whole family was having their
dinner. Sheru wanted to have some water after the
dinner. Incidentally, Sher Singh and Sherry had
intentionally asked their servants to leave for the
day, so that Sheru was compelled to do all his
work by himself.
Sheru did not find any servant to fetch
him water, so he got angry at his mother
and insisted his mother to get him water.

When his mother did not oblige him, he became
furious. King Sher Singh too became angry with his
son for his rogue behaviour and as a punishment,
he extended the leave for his servants by another 7
days.
Sheru was still angry and he went off to sleep
without having any water after his dinner. He got
up late in the morning. By then his parents were
through with their breakfast. Some chicken
sandwiches were laid on the dining table for
Sheru's breakfast. Sheru again started shouting at
his mother to find cold sandwiches for his
breakfast. By then Sher Singh entered in the dining
room and scolded Sheru for his bad behaviour with
his mother.
Sheru was still angry and he went out of the
house. Sherry tried to stop him but he did not
listen. King Sher Singh remarked to his wife that
if Sheru did not improve now, he will never

improve in his entire life.
Sheru thought of having his breakfast at his
friend’s place. He had formed an opinion that
except his parents, the parents of all of his friends
are nice. He arrived at his friend Dinky Deer's
house.
But he was leaving for the market as he was
asked by his mother to shop vegetables for the
dinner. Sheru had come to Dinky's place to rest, but
he was surprised to find Dinky working for his
family. He made some excuse and took leave from
his friend.
Sheru was fond of Tina Giraffe. She had lots of
toys to play. He thought of visiting her.
As he reached at Teena’s place, he was surprised
to find Teena working. She was helping her mother
to prepare lunch by cutting vegetables.
Tina was delighted to see Sheru but she asked
him to wait as she was busy through cutting the
vegetables and doing the laundry for the
family.
She said, “Maximum you can enjoy television
till I get free to play with you.” Sheru made some
excuses and he went away.
Now Sheru went to Golu Elephant. Golu
was busy teaching mathematics to his younger
brother.
He saw Sheru and said, “It is nice that you have
come, Sheru. You can go through the newspaper for
the time being. Tolu has mathematics examination
tomorrow. Let me solve his doubts and I will join
you shortly.”
Sheru was disappointed and he went away. He
was very hungry and still he had got nothing to eat
since morning. He saw Laloo Bear. He was watering
his garden. He was then joined by his father. He too
saw Sheru and said, “Come on in, Sheru. Today I
have cooked fish all by myself.”
Sheru had sensed the appetising aroma of fish
as he was approaching Laloo's house. He was as
such hungry and he came to Laloo's house. Laloo
told him that his mother was visiting his ailing
grandfather.

L aloo and his father were doing everything by

themselves. By then Laloo’s father went to the
kitchen to warm the rice and fish curry. Laloo
cleaned the dining table and laid the table for the
food.
All the 3 ate rice and tasty fish. After eating the
food, Laloo did the utensils and Sheru cleared the
dining table. Laloo and his father praised Sheru for
cleaning the dining table like well-trained helping

hand. They also praised Sheru’s parents for
inculcating good habits in their son. Sheru was
instantly happy at being appreciated by Laloo and
his father.
Laloo then informed Sheru that he will go for
shopping vegetables in the evening. Sheru
accompanied Laloo to the market for shopping in
the evening. Sheru found fresh vegetables in the
market very fascinating. He decided that he will
also shop vegetables for his family.

A fter returning from the market, they played for

some time. But suddenly, he remembered that
his parents would be worried for him. He took
leave of Laloo and returned towards his home.
At his home Sher Singh and Sherry were really
worried for Sheru. They did not have their food for
the whole day.
Sherry was scolding Sher Singh for being tough
with Sheru. By then Sheru entered the house. Sher
Singh was delighted to find his son back at home.
He said, “Please forgive me for being strict with
you, son.”
Sheru instead said, “Papa, rather I should
apologise. Till now I was not able to understand
your teachings. I also make apology to you mother,
especially for being so rude to you. But now I
have realised that everybody should work by
themselves. I should be lending my helping hand
to you. Nobody becomes inferior by doing his job
by himself, rather working by ourselves makes us
happy and independent.”
Sher Singh and Sherry were overwhelmed with
the transformation in their son and they hugged
their son affectionately. ●

“V
ISHAL, WILL you please give me your
math's notebook. I have to complete my
homework,” said Sushil, as he entered
the room. He lived in the neighbourhood. Both the
boys were good friends and were studying in the same
class.
“Come, I will show you an interesting thing,” said
Vishal as he held Sushil's hand and came to the table.
There was a glass jar with 2-3 butterflies on the table.
“See, I caught these butterflies in the morning
only. Aren't these beautiful?”
“But the butterflies will suffocate in the jar,” said
Sushil.
“I don't think so, the jar has many holes to get
fresh air for the butterflies,” said Vishal happily.

 “But the butterflies look more beautiful in open. In
this cramped jar these butterflies will...”
“No, I will not let them free. You wait here, I will
get the notebook,” said Vishal and he went to the
other room.
Sushil was feeling pity for the butterflies. He
instantly opened the jar. The butterflies flew to their
freedom. They fluttered around for some time in the
room, as if they were thanking Sushil before flying
away towards the garden.
When Vishal came, he found the jar empty. He was
infuriated. “How dare you released my butterflies?
Get lost from my house.”
Sushil went away quietly. That day onwards
Vishal even stopped talking to Sushil.
Few days later, Vishal celebrated his
birthday and threw a grand party. He
invited all his friends to his party
except Sushil. Naturally, Sushil felt
very bad at his friend's behaviour
towards him.
Vishal’s uncle gave a
cute little pup to
Vishal as his

birthday gift. The black spots on his milky white coat
looked very beautiful. Thus Vishal named his pup as
Spoty. But Vishal was a selfish boy. He took no trouble
of giving any food to little Spoty.
Poor Spoty was tied to the gate the whole day and
used to bark constantly. One day, Vishal got angry
with his barking and thrashed him with a stick.

S ushil felt extremely pity for Vishal's inhumanly

treatment towards little Spoty. He wanted to tell
Vishal to be humane towards his pet, but he was knew
Vishal was not going to listen to him, as he was angry.
Rather he would vent all his anger on poor Spoty.
One day, Spoty was hungry. He broke away his
leash. Spoty was standing in his compound. He
lovingly called his name and Spoty came running to
him, as he was badly deprived of love and affection.
Sushil gave him some biscuits and milk. He then gave
him a nice wash, which delighted Spoty as he was fed
and washed. Spoty started playing with Sushil.
Soon, Spoty developed liking for Sushil. He
wagged his tail and ran after Sushil. He picked up
Spoty in his lap and said, “Yes, I know that you want
to play with me. But if your master Vishal finds you
with me, he will fight with me. So better you go home
now.”
But Spoty was not going back home. Suddenly,
Vishal came shouting at Sushil.
“How dare you touch my Spoty?” shouted Vishal.
“Look Vishal, you must look after your pet. He is
deprived of your love. If you give food, he will not
come to me.”
“I don't need your suggestion. Spoty is my pet. I
will treat him the way I like. Who are you to poke your
dirty nose in my affairs?”

 Vishal snatched Spoty away from Sushil and tied
him with the leash to the gate. He picked up a stick
and began thrashing Spoty. Poor fellow started crying
in pain. Right at that time Vishal's mother came
running from the kitchen.
“What is this nonsense, Vishal? Why are you
thrashing poor Spoty?
“Look mother, he broke away his leash and ran to
Sushil's house,” said Sushil.
“Of course, he will go to Sushil. You don't look
after his daily food.You don't even play with him and
take him for a walk,” said Vishal's mother.
His sister Neeta also joined in and said, “I only
give him food when Vishal is not around.”
“What is all this, I am listening to Vishal?” asked
Vishal's mother. Vishal had no answer for his cruelty
towards Spoty and he bowed his head down like
criminal in shame.

N eeta once again reported to her mother, “You

know mother, today Sushil gave food and wash
to Spoty. Better he should give away Spoty to his
friend Sushil. He will look after and treat Spoty
nicely.”
“No, Spoty is my pet,” shouted Vishal. “Please
forgive me mother….”
“Okay, I will give one last chance to treat Spoty
like good, kind-hearted human being or else I will
handover Spoty to Sushil. Vishal’s mother gave a final
warning to Vishal.
That day onwards Vishal started looking after
Spoty well. He made friends with Sushil once again.
He became humane towards the animal. Now Vishal
and Sushil spent lot of time playing with Spoty, who
was very happy as well to find 2 masters. ●
