The Green Weekly

Cygnet Sea Dragons Junior Soccer Club Inc
1. Welcome
Derby weekend returns: The round gone was almost a mirror reflection of the previous week with no draws 6 wins and 4 losses with a goal differential in our favour of 22. On average, the club is achieving a result each game of 3.7 2.2, In comparison to season 5 (2012) where we achieved a staggering club average of 4.17 1.97. Overall while our club attacking form may have dipped, our defence remains rock solid. The attacking drop is easily explained if you refer to the famous formulae that makes a return in this weeks Coaches box section. This week Played 10 Won 6 Lost 4 Draw - For 39 Against 17 This season Played 109 Won 59 (54%) Lost 39 Draw 10 For 405 Against 247
Above is only for Juniors

This weekend is the return of the derby. Our mighty U6 and U8 White both venture to the Woodbridge Whalers home ground. As discussed in a previous newsletter, Woodbridge took the spoils in the derby during season 5, however this season we are 2 wins from 2 games. Good luck to both teams. The weekend gone saw a number of parents and players attend the Sunday Victory League Cup final between South Hobart and Kingborough. These games are a great way for your child to see the big picture with how the game is played. Football fans across Tasmania are set to be treated to the most exciting Hyundai A-League preseason fixture on the Australian calendar this year, with Melbourne Victory scheduled to face 2012-13 A-League premiers Western Sydney Wanderers at the Kingston Twin Ovals on Sunday, September, 29. Fans will be in for an action packed day as Victory will also play the senior Tasmanian side, featuring the stars of the Victory League as part of a huge PFD double header. The football feast will kick off with Tasmania vs Melbourne Victory at 12pm followed by the all A-League blockbuster from 2:30pm. Check out the Football Federation Tasmania website for details. http://www.footballfedtas.com.au/
Good luck to all teams

THE FOOTBALL RAMBLER

English footballs 10 most interesting stories
English players have always been a favourite of the media. With that said, some of the players seem to have tried their best to attract media attention. Here are some of the most interesting stories from the lives of footballers from England:

Rice-ilicious lucky charm Jack Robinson, an English goalkeeper who first started playing in the 19th century, ate a plate of rice pudding before each match as he thought it gave him good luck. On the one occasion where he couldnt have his pre-match rice pudding he conceded a staggering 11 goals. The most expensive 1 coin Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher lost his rag when he was hit by a 1 coin during an FA Cup tie against Arsenal in 2002. The Liverpool legend picked up the coin and hurled it back into the crowd which prompted the referee to send him off, Liverpool to fine him 40,000 and England to drop him. Obscene mascot gets red Macclesfield Town mascot Roary the Lion was shown a straight red card following a players brawl in a match against Lincoln City in 1998. It transpired that the mascot had been making obscene gestures towards opposing players and fans while the brawl was taking place. Three second Pratt David Pratt lived up to his surname when he was sent off after just three seconds during the game between Chippenham Town and Bashley in England, 2008. Pratt launched into a horrific challenge on an opposition opponent which left the referee with no choice but to send him from the field. Career threatening wit Rodney Marsh was well known during his playing days for having a quick wit. He cracked a joke in 1973 at the expense of England boss Sir Alf Ramsey, which caused the legendary England boss to stare him down in front of the dressing room and he never played for England again. He secured nine caps in his international career. Fired on TV Former Queens Park Rangers assistant manager Bruce Rioch was left stunned when he learnt that he had been sacked from his job via the old British information TV service Ceefax. No one had physically told him about the decision to relieve him of his role in November 1997.

Labor induction for England call-up The wife of Everton goalkeeper Richard Wright took marriage to another level when she agreed to have the birth of the pairs first baby induced. The reason was so that Wright would not be forced to miss an important match for the club as he was on the fringes of the England squad at the time. Fan in the dressing room An England fan managed to get into the England dressing room following the 0-0 draw against Algeria in the 2010 World Cup. It turned out that the fan was desperately looking for the toilet in the stadium but media reports suggested the fan had broken into the dressing room to have a go at Englands players. No goal, no shave Former Reading goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann said he would not shave his bottom lip until he conceded a goal back in 2006. The American could not shave his bottom lip for a staggering seven weeks which remains one of the best defensive spells in Readings history. Undisciplined mascot Bury FCs Robbie the Bobby has one of the worst discipline records for a football mascot. He was sent off a total of three times in three months in 2001 for a 30 yard run and celebration, for mooning after goals twice in one game and after a fight with Cardiff City mascot Barclay the Bluebird.

Edition 15 10 August 2013 COACHES BOX

A Mathematical Impossibility: On Saturday at the Showgrounds an U14 Division D match unfolded featuring the league leader versus the second from bottom. Though it looked an intriguing match-up on paper the performances were an accurate reflection of positions on the ladder (Editors Note: Maybe thats because the match was played not on paper but on grass!!). Part way through the second half with the score 0-4 against us we were awarded a penalty which Christian Sayers gently lobbed into the welcoming arms of their keeper. Fortuitously some Glenorchy players had encroached on the penalty area as Christian was still taking his run-up and eagle-eyed referee Andrew Otto promptly ordered the kick to be retaken which Christian equally promptly gently lobbed into the welcoming arms of their keeper with the noteworthy exception being that this time their keeper parried it following which Christian and some of his attack oriented team-mates redeemed themselves when uncharacteristically (for this match at least) they reacted quicker than their opponents to the keepers gaffe. Following some penalty box ping-pong the ball again found its way to Christian, who was incidentally one of our better players on the day <along with Brady Cook and Archie Cumper>, and this time with the keeper off his line, picked his spot to score. Alas, that goal was a mere blip as we marched inexorably towards our fourth successive defeat. We know that some of our players lack football tactical nous and thats to be expected as some of them are social footballers and were happy to have them on the team. What we cant get our heads around is the prevalent lack of focus which reared its ugly head the previous week also, against Nelson. However, its by no means all down to the players as Dave and I as coaches are clearly failing to get through to the kids and were as dumbfounded as them as to whats going to be needed to turn things around. Were stuck in a rut at the moment and Dave and I certainly share at least equal responsibility (its certainly not down to a lack of effort on our part). Despite our collective shortcomings we were able to raise our game, play some good football and win some matches earlier in the season so we certainly can do it. Clearly we need to try something different so with that in mind we decided to turn to a tried and trusted method in an attempt to not only ascertain what is going wrong but also to offer some predictions of what the future may hold. So we called on the following predictive formula courtesy of Hendricks and Robey to calculate the probability distribution of the coefficient of variation and in this way wed be able to predict future results. Here it is:

where the symbol

indicates that the summation is only over even values of n-1-i.)

Once the log tables had stopped cranking and the output chute had begun spitting out bits of paper we were presented with three useful insights: 1. According to Hendricks and Robey it is now mathematically impossible for us to win the league (Editors Note: Hopefully they meant this year only??). This hit us like a thunderclap as it was totally unexpected but as H&R explained, Glenorchy already have twenty two points while we only have seven. Although if we win our remaining five matches we will also have twenty two, Glenorchy would need to lose all six of theirs for us to draw level. Glenorchy still have to play second placed University twice with the latter already on nineteen points. If Uni beat them twice theyll have twenty five points. Shocking news but its probably a good thing as that revelation means we can stop applying our focus to champagne dinners and concentrate solely

on winning some matches as the Bollinger is going to remain on ice for at least another year (Editors Note: I heard its not actually Bollinger but a Scottish version called Bollocker!!). 2. According to H&R we will turn things round, at least this weekend, and will win v Beachside, a team higher up the league. When we least expect it our kids will come through with a hearty helping of the old Sea Dragon spirit. 3. Actually, theres only two but Ive a feeling Hendricks and Robey may be right. See you on the weekend. U14 Division D Glenorchy Knights 6-1 Cygnet Sea Dragons (Scorer for Cygnet Christian Sayers). Yours, The Coaches Box

8. Match Reports Cygnet U/6

Great result on a cold day, a win always makes you feel a bit warmer. We started the game with a little apprehension, having Archie and Charlie Hooper not available to play. So with no subs and a chilly wind in our face we kicked off. Our concerns were soon put to rest as Charlie Gorringe knocked up his first goal. Charlie swelled with confidence and was unstoppable for the rest of the game, scoring 3 more goals and mowing down the Kingborough strikers with ease. William pushed hard kept the opposition busy, he also came pretty close to scoring a couple. Abby was always in the right place at the right time and eventually scored her first for the season. (well done Abby) Flynn was following the play well and did some great kicks down the line. Great job team Alby Cygnet U6 5 def Kingborough Blue 2 (Charlie G 4, Abby 1)

Cygnet U/7 Green

Last time we played Margate green it was a win with a much narrower margin (2-0), but our boys had it together this week with focus and drive. All five of them scored which was great for team morale. Tommy had a load of near misses but managed to score a goal and helped Harry get a second one in too. Harry showed good control of the ball, managing to weave it through the pack. Rory scored through impressive perservence and determination; I wouldnt have wanted to mess with him that day! Huon took the defence by surprise with an impressive left-footed goal, and Benny also managed a left footer and some solid blocks. Cygnet U7 Green 8 def Margate Green 0 (Huon 2, Benny 2, Harry 2, Rory 1, Tommy 1)

Today was an exciting game to watch however it was our first loss for the season. Every time we gained possession Channel Christian attacked. We were unable to get moving and pass the ball well. Which made for very few chances at attacking their goal. Due to our great defence however we kept Channel Christian's score line low. We have lessons to learn from the game. Well done boys.

Edition 15 10 August 2013 Cygnet U/8 Green

With little Ethan down for the count with an ear infection, our 6 strong U8 Green rocked up at St Aloysius where in Noah and his Great big Ark (the nets) stood impressively in comparison to those on offer down the road at the Kingborough Lions. During warm up, it was obvious that no matter how hard we tried in goals, anything positioned 2m either side was going to be hard to stop. Those observations did not matter in the end, and neither did being one short. Our 6 strong force ran hard the whole game and demoralised their opposition to the tune of 9-0. Special mention has to go to Kate who was magnificent. We had spoken at training about not being afraid to go on a run and Kate took this to heart. Numerous times she dribbled her way through the ants and was rewarded with two fine goals. Tristan is also on a hot run and is starting to show he has taken all the advice on board. It is amazing what happens when he actually stops and controls the ball first, looks up and then goes or passes. Great all round display and the guys are waiting anxiously to meet Kingborough Lions White on home turf to attune for their 0-0 draw. Cygnet U8 Green 9 def St Aloysius Red 0 (Zac 4, Kate 2, Tristan 2, Ethan S 0)

Cygnet U/8 White

The Dragon that roared into life at Margate last week was very subdued this week. The team was lacklustre and lethargic with an unwillingness to move forward together and there were numerous occasions when an attacker, having dribbled the ball forward, was isolated with no other players in support. To the oppositions credit they were a much improved team from the 4-0 result last time round. Half time saw the Dragons 1-nil up and go further ahead after one of Otiss trademark corners saw the ball deflected off Griffins ankle and into the net. We have also identified Callum as one who has a strong boot and is able to kick the ball from a corner into the centre of the box. The opposition had nullified our attack by permanently affixing two defenders in the box and adjacent to their keeper which only allowed Huonville four up front as an attacking option. I could see that an easy option for the Dragons was for me to have one of our players positioned in no mans land and have our defenders boot the ball up field which would have opened up the scoring possibilities. However at 2 nil up, I felt it was more beneficial as a team to develop the skills to be able to construct a goal from our defensive half of the field. A pleasing aspect was that the players followed the coaches directive of quick throw ins and to move around to give the person throwing the ball plenty of options. Well done kids. The U9 Greens had a good result against Hutchins. A couple of early (if not slightly lucky) goals got them off to a good start, courtesy of Denzel, and the rest of the team jumped on the wagon. There was some great play during the game and the passing is improving match by match. We (Ric) moved everyone round a fair bit in this game which seemed to work well with most players getting a bit of time in defence and forward. Oscar L managed to wriggle out of his goal keeping responsibility on the excuse of a sore arm (but promised to repay the debt next week). Oscar O earned himself man(/woman) of the match by standing up to the plate and volunteering for goals in the second half - and put in a couple of great saves. Coby engineered a couple of superb goals in the second half with one notable shot up field to Tim waiting by the post for the tap into the net. Without mentioning everyone (as everyone really deserves a mention this week), it was a great team effort, great play from them all. Tim P.S. from Oscar Coby saved a great goal in the first half no fear at all. Hes getting so good in goals. Cygnet U9 Green 7 def Hutchins Black 0 (Denzel 3, Coby 2, Oscar L 1, Tim 1)

Cygnet U/9 White

A depleted team due to illness this week meant no subs and a hard work session for everyone. We started the game late as we only had 5 players at kick off time but thankfully the Taroona coach allowed us a few minutes to track down the late comers. It was a cool morning and took a bit for the players to warm up. Rory started in goals and he did a fantastic job. So many great saves. Only one very dubious goal scored in the first half to Taroona even though most of the action was in their half. Great defence work from our Cygnet team with some beautiful clearing kicks from Ina. A couple of great kicks at goal by our attack which just missed the goal, one flying high above the top bar. Second half was a bit more uneven as Taroona took advantage of some unlucky moments for us and kicked a couple of quick goals. Elliot did a great job as goalie but the pace of the Taroona team, with freshly substituted legs, got the better of our defence although a couple of their goals were more by luck than skill. Codi was the only goal scorer on the day for Cygnet. The score again didn't reflect how well both teams played in the middle of the field. Some terrific pressure from Cygnet really made Taroona work hard for their win. Taroona is a fast team but seemed to lack some teamwork and good sportsmanship, whereas the technical skills really were held in the Cygnet team who were just not quite powerful enough on the day.Well done to you all, and we hope Ned and Toby are back to good health for next week.

A great way to see how we are cruising is to play teams a second time. The last two weeks have seen us go 4-0 and 4-1 against two teams we have drawn with and lost to earlier in the year. The boys have worked hard and the results are on the board. St Virgils were a little unlucky not to score another two goals, however we were a bit unlucky not to score another seven. The big question on everybody's lips though is what did Osker's mum feed him before the game and where can we get some? Go the Green. Cygnet Sea Dragons 4 def St Virgils 1(Jake 2, Save 1, Kieron 1)

After one of the best training sessions we have had on Friday afternoon we went into battle with west hobart tigers who whipped us 7-0 only a couple of months ago. Toby was away in Melbourne and Sadie had the flu but played the whole game despite feeling like crap (good on you Sadie!). We borrowed a player from West Hobart in both halves but elected to only borrow one and not sub. The game started great and Will claimed the first goal for us about 15 mins into the half. Mollie did brilliantly in her first time as goalie and saved goal after goal! Eventually one got through and the first half score was 1 1. Bobbin claimed our second goal shortly into the second half and it looked like we were going to turn the tide on the Tigers. Unfortunately backed into a corner the Tigers pulled out all stops and managed to get one past the Sea Dragon wall leveling the score at 2 2 with about 15 mins to go, they then scored a really lucky one straight through the legs of our defenders and into the goal. Final scores were 3 2 for one of the best games the guys have played all year. Well done team! We can't say who was the best for the game because you all did fantastically! Great play by everyone!

Edition 15 10 August 2013 U12 Sea Dragons

This was always going to be a tough game against a solid Taroona squad and a sleepy start from us didn't help matters. A great strike from Taroona (from an incredible angle) got the game off to a bad start for the U12's, as most of us on the sideline couldn't actually see the ball had gone in. We battled through the half with some defensive mishaps and positional mistakes costing us dearly. But with Ewan and Soren managing a couple of goals we scraped in at half time at 4 - 2. It was not like the last games where we had managed to keep the goal count down or kept clean sheets. It could only get better in the second half... HT 4 - 2 We got our game together in the second half and started to play better and although we had chances and pulled another goal back thanks to Kai. Taroona were not going to roll over and they scored the final goal of the game to make us rue our missed chances and first half performance. Again the team did great to play the whole game without substitutions and too press they way we did in the second half. But positioning cost us dearly and gave too much space to Taroona allowing them to punish us and they did. Back to basics in training so we can tighten things up again both defensively and position wise for the next game.
