SWAMI VIVEKANANDA

I should not like my
writing to spare other
people the trouble of
thinking. But, if
possible, stimulate
someone to thoughts
of his own.
LUDWIG WITTENSTEIN

HIS eyes hypnotise. Now that is a schoolboy rhyme. But there is that something about them.
They do not let you go. They out-see you.
His words do the same. They startle you, they out-think you. They do that by their sheer confidence. One
might say, by their conceit. And, by their unexpectedness, their frankness, their contrariness. He once said that
by his outspoken-ness he had emptied out whole halls. Think of someone who draws people, like bees to a
honeycomb and then does the opposite as well smokes them away. But that is how Swami Vivekananda
was.
He spoke the language of the Vedas but not as others spoke them. He chose his own verses and breathing his
own passion into them, gave them new, contemporary meanings. He then shared them, pristine with entranced
listeners.
Old truths sounded new when coming from Vivekananda. New truths acquired in his hands the ring of ancient
sanction.
In 1863, the year he was born, the welts left by the Great Uprising were yet hot and hurting. So, this son of
Kshatriya Bengal could have become a patriot of the extremist, warring kind. But no, he said. Nationalism of
a purely agitational pattern cannot carry us far.
In 1885, when he was twenty-two, the Indian National Congress was inaugurated with fanfare. So, nationalism
of the public-speaking kind had also opened to young Naren for adoption. But Naren was not meant for
patterns pre-laid for him. Without the necessary preparation what is the use of just shouting in Congress? he
asked.
And then, revealing his natural bent, his true calling, he added, with patriotism must be associated a real
feeling for others We must not forget that we have to teach a great lesson to the world religion and
philosophy
Vivekananda was on an inner journey. But that was not going to be an individual journey. India was too
crowded with people and problems for him to be left alone.
By his lights he had seen Kali. Not once, but time and again.
Vivekananda loved to sing. And he sang rapturously. There is the Bangla song, Kalipada Neel Kamale,
Shyamapada Neel Kamale. Close your eyes listening to it, and you will imagine Vivekananda intoning it.
Each one of his listeners thought he was speaking or singing for her, him.
That was not wrong. They thought he was speaking their minds. There they were not right.
Hindu orthodoxy saw in him the harbinger of a revival. Its pundits were in for a shock. I accept all the
religions Can Gods work be finished? Must it not be a continuing revelation? And to their stupefaction,
added Difference is the first sign of thought I pray they multiply until at last we have as many sects as
human beings
In 1890 he set out travelling to learn. His lore preceded him everywhere, defeating his attempts at masking his
identity. Maharajas feted him, farmers hosted him. The Maharaja of Mysore expected to see a mendicant in
the swami. He was not disappointed. But this mendicant was of a different kind. When the Maharaja asked
him to choose from an array of gifts, the costlier the better, the Swami chose two a tobacco pipe and a
cigar.
2
He was not patronising tobacco. He was puncturing sanctimony.
He has let his hope outstrip his insight in one important matter. He said to Nivedita the era of obscurantism
was over. It is anything but. Worse, it is now co-opting him.
More people worship God-men in India today, more fear totems and observe taboos, are held captive by
superstition and tied down to hollow ritual than ever were before. They should know that Vivekananda called
ritual the kindergarten of religion.
The intersect of religion and politics is occupied by yatras which invoke Vivekananda, the greatest of all
yatris. Politicians heave him onto their raths. They thieve his truth to feed their untruths. They offer him for
worship, and bask in his glory.
They have figured that Vivekananda worshipped is Vivekananda forgotten, Vivekananda enshrined is
Vivekananda enchained, Vivekananda co-opted is Vivekananda encashed.
Sri Ramakrishna had said of him, He will teach That spiritual genius knew his disciple.
His co-opters would prefer his cut-out images now to preach. They know their self-interest.
Teaching is about imparting knowledge. Preaching is about increasing the size of the flock.
Vivekananda, the world-renouncer was also a world-inhabiter. In America, after a talk on God, throngs of
women jumped barricades to get near him. Watching the spectacle a lady said Well, my lad, if you can resist
that onslaught you are indeed God.
Vivekananda was not God, thank God. He was human. And he was fallible.
His statements on who is a Brahmin and what Brahminism means, are not among his liberating utterances. His
observations on caste are hugely problematic. Some of his views on womankind are, today, unacceptable. His
comments on slaves and slavery in America invite long editorial scissors.
Between Vivekananda co-opters and Vivekananda nay-sayers is Indian society which has made an icon of
him. Sri Ramakrishna, Srima Sarada and Swami Vivekananda make a lovely trio.
All three the Hindu Right, the Left and the public at large are depriving themselves.
They are denying themselves a golden opportunity to delve into the mind of a great mystic, an equally great
thinker.
I believe if Vivekananda had lived longer he would have seen how times are changing and given us
trajectories, ancient and new, to travel on. I also believe he would have let Time influence his own thinking
and alter some of his intellectual positions. He who questioned Sri Ramakrishna, his guru, would have had to
take some hard questioning himself. But all that was not to be.
Vivekananda was a mystic of mystics. His spiritual intelligence makes him an Indian sage, not a mascot.
Vivekananda was a thinker of thinkers. His lively engagement with Indias problems makes him a social
philosopher. He must not be reduced to a preacher in ochre.
Our intellectually anaesthetised, politically conditioned and philosophically unadventurous times need his
gaze and those eyes to startle us into life again.
(Gopalkrishna Gandhi is a former Governor of West Bengal. His tribute was commissioned by The Hindu on
the occasion of the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda)

I am sorry that I had to leave in a hurry, as my wife was to board the train at Kozhikode. I had no
other option than to leave by the same train. She could get into my coach
and Mr Chandrasekharan my student at REC was good company.
The printout I gave has been quoted in the Mathrubhumi. I could not see
Manorama and Deshabhimani coverage. Anyway, your efforts are
commendable.
My wife wishes to thank you for the beautiful gift.
Hope we will have more technical activities in Kannur. IEEE in GEC Kannur is active now.
Regards and thanks Mohandas

Reached home safe. Journey was fine. Balu bought a new ticket for TCR, and the train arrived early.
So we crossed the bridge and boarded, but TTE said he can give a seat only up to Shornur for Balu. So,
he went back and bought a new ticket again. Then we sat with my friend who was in my opposite berth
(Dr. Oommen V Oommen, (Chair of Biodiversity Board) and talked till TTE came again. He said after
sometime, he may be able to give up to TCR. We went to sleep by the time we reached Kozhikode.
I will look at reports today. Thank you for giving this forum to renew camaraderie and to speak to
budding engineers and recall memories of our common friend, CMD! More later, as I am to immerse in
my conference nitty gritties. Regards to your wife, Mohanan Nambiar and others.
Love and Regards, -VKDamodaran

Er Balasubramanian is a special person. Once we travelled to Ernakulam to attend the GB of the
Association. (We denotes CMD and me) Arriving South station at the wee hours we marched to the
residence of Balus sister. The family gave us a warm welcome, provided facilities for morning chores
and treated us for a memorable breakfast before allowing us to go to Woodlands. Those were days of
penury. Travel expenses were not reimbursed. I am very happy that Balu was able to spare time and
efforts to be with us at Kannur and share memories. Thank you, Balu for your kind gesture. Sorry for the
inconvenience you had to put up with. Nayanar
I Received the January 2013 issue of Lineage with the direct content access facility. My
sincere thanks and congrats for the efforts and contributions for that. The cover picture is
very beautiful as well as meaning full as it touches renewable energy harnessing, the
thought of the time. -
-Mohan Nair
At our age we no longer create adventures or news. In my case I live to a large extent on
memories of our good experiences of the past. Your invitation to come to Kannur came at a time
I was immersed in fond remembrances about WBP s of Malabar area. Even 3 hrs there was well
spent and helped me to have another span of a few years happily. Please thank all our fellow
engineers for the love shown by them. SBK Menon

I wanted to say how we all appreciated your gesture in attending the December function at
Kannur. We would have loved if you stayed a bit longer. The event was richer by the very
presence. And I used the auto drive Balu and SBK had, to extoll CMD! The new issue is enclosed.
Just go through, even though it hardly merits serious reading. Best Wishes, Nayanar
The lineage looks beautiful in her new dress. Its a conversion from skirt and dhavani to salwar and khamees.
Congratulations! Why dont you allow some pages to publish ten good photos every month?

UNFOUNDED FEAR
Professor B.M.Hegde
Luis Pasteurs theory of germs is ridiculous fiction. Pierre Prachette
According to one hypothesis, even disease-carrying bacteria are important for good health. Indiscriminate
annihilation of these little creatures will deny a young ones developing immune system, its opportunities to meet
the adversaries and build germ-fighting muscles properly. Thanks to the soap and antiseptics industry, the whole
world is becoming obsessed with the fear of germs. There may be a few who do not heed the TV doctors advice
on hand-washing and bathing. They get an exposure to a multitude of bacteria and develop a robust immune
system.
For every cell in your body there are nine germ cells. Human meta-genome has about 25000 human genes. It also
has 2 to 3 trillion germs genes. We have been living happily with them inside us. Do not hate them. They are our
friends and saviors.
When one takes antibiotics the gut gets depleted of these friends and we suffer from immune deficiency. Soaps,
antiseptics and antibiotics have created a new world of killer superbugs all multi-drug resistant germs. The
increased use of home cleaning products and soaps containing anti-microbial Triclosan has gone up. And so has
the reported cases of asthma cases. Washing powder has another villain lurking in the back ground. Many of
them use bacillus subtilis as their base. This germ produces a protein residue when it works on clothes. It
provokes an incurable lung decease.
The world needs de-schooling quickly. Germs in their natural habitat are our friends. Let our children play in the
dust outside in the sun. Simple inexpensive oil-based soap is all that is needed with clean, water to wash hands
and take bath. Discard antiseptic soap. They damage our immune system in the long run.
(Dr. Hegde is a former Professor of Cardiology and a former Vice Chancellor of Manipal University)

CULINARY MAGIC
BREAKFAST AT RAMASSERI
Ramasseris claim to fame is a simple breakfast dish, soft flat breakfast cakes called Ramasseri
idli. Idli is a staple breakfast dish all over south India.
These soft, moist, steamed cakes are made with
fermented batter made from rice and urad dal. They
taste salty with a hint of sourness. Various
accompaniments served with it enhance its taste.
Traditionally idlis are steamed in stacks of Idli plates.
What makes Ramasseri idli special is its shape, feather
light texture and an earthy aroma acquired from steam
cooking in unglazed clay pots. The Mudaliars of
Ramasseri are the traditional cooks who prepare this idli.
Vehicles from neighboring towns arrive in this village
very early in the morning to collect idlis to sell at their restaurants. Somehow restaurants and
professional chefs have not mastered the technique of preparing this dish.
Soak one kilogram of good parboiled rice and hundred grams of urad dal with black skin in
separate pots for several hours. Wash and remove the skin of urad dal and grind it along with a
6
large pinch of fenugreek seeds to a smooth thick batter. Wash and grind the rice separately and
combine the two. Add salt to taste and stir well. Cover and set aside, and let the batter ferment
overnight".

Do not stack more than four idlis at a time, and steam till they are cooked. Cook them only on
wood burning stoves, and always use wood from tamarind tree. They burn evenly and maintain
steady heat, It is ideal to steam in unglazed clay pots, but you may substitute with stainless
steel pots. And when they are ready, do remove them from the clay steamers with a large leaf
from jack tree".
The idli steaming on the steamer was ready. The cover was lifted, and the stack of clay
containers slowly removed. They had hollow bottoms. They were tightly stringed with twine,
almost like a tennis racquet. And the piece of cotton cloth was spread over these strings. The
chef placed a large flat jack tree leaf over the idli and slowly turned it upside down. The idli slid
off perfectly. She transferred it carefully to a rattan tray lined with fresh banana leaves
The fluffy idlis fall on the leaf. The coconut and tomato chutneys give the green leaf and the
snow-white idlis a dash of brightness. The podi is served last. The peppery-hot podi hits you
hard, yet you keep going for that lovely, tangy taste. We clean up the leaf in quick time, and buy a
parcel of idlis to take home.

Missing Sugar Bowl
Mrs. Fisher comes to visit her son Jacob for dinner. He lives with a female roommate, Rachel.
During the course of the meal, his mother couldn't help but notice how pretty Jacob's roommate
was. She had long been suspicious of a relationship between the two, and this had only made
her more curious.
Over the course of the evening, while watching the two interact, she started to wonder if there
was more between Jacob and his roommate than met the eye. Reading his mom's thoughts,
Jacob volunteered, 'I know what you must be thinking, but I assure you, Rachel and I are just
roommates.' About a week later, Rachel came to Jacob saying, 'Ever since your mother came to
dinner, I've been unable to find the silver sugar bowl. You don't suppose she took it, do you?'
Well, I doubt it, but I'll email her, just to be sure.' So he sat down and wrote an email:
Dear Mama, I'm not saying that you 'did' take the sugar bowl from my house; I'm not saying
that you 'did not' take it. But the fact remains that it has been missing ever since you were here
for dinner. Love, Jacob
Several days later, Jacob received a response email from his Mama which read: Dear Son, I'm
not saying that you 'do' sleep with Rachel, and I'm not saying that you 'do not' sleep with her.
But the fact remains that if she was sleeping in her OWN bed, she would have found the sugar
bowl by now. Love, Mama

How will you measure your life?
Clayton Christensens How Will You Measure Your Life? is based on a series of observations he
made at the reunions of his Harvard Business School classmates. At his fifth-year reunion, Clayton
looked around thinking that everyone looked so polished and prosperous that we couldnt help but
feel that we really were part of something special. His classmates were doing extremely well. They
had great jobs, traveled to exotic locations and married spouses much better looking than they
were. Their lives seemed destined to be fantastic on every level.By the tenth anniversary, things
looked different. Among these best and brightest, several were clearly unhappy. Behind the faade
of professional success, there were many who did not enjoy what they were doing for a living. There
were, also, numerous stories of divorces or unhappy marriages, One classmate hadnt talked to his
children for years. Another was on her third divorce. What disturbed him was that these were not
just extremely capable people, but really decent people, too. Yet something had gone terribly wrong
for them.
To make matters worse, among his classmates was Jeffrey Skilling, who had landed in jail for his
role in the Enron scandal. What had sent this man in the wrong direction? These personal
dissatisfactions, family failures, professional struggles and even criminal behavior were not just with
Christensens Harvard classmates. He saw the same thing among his classmates at Oxford. Even
with professional success, many were clearly unhappy.
Christensen directed his students in the study of theories about why and how problems and
opportunities emerge in businesses. On the last day of class, he took the discussion a step further
and had them examine their personal lives and dreams. Applying business theories to their personal
lives, he asked them not just what they hoped would happen, but what they predict will happen in
their lives based on their decisions and choices. He asked: How can I be sure that

I will be successful and happy in my career?
My relationship with my spouse, my children, and my extended family and close friends
become an enduring source of happiness?
I live a life of integrityand stay out of jail.
He says, Solving the challenges in your life requires a deep understanding of what causes what to
happen.
The Balance of Calculation and Serendipity
So, how do you find happiness in your career? You have to have a strategy about what you want to
achieve and how you will get there. Some people know what they want when they are ten-years old
and never vary. Some people have definite five-year plans. High achievers put pressure on
themselves to do exactly this. Underlying this beliefis the implicit assumption that they should risk
deviating from their vision only if things go horribly wrong.
We have intentions for our careers. Against those intentions, opportunities and threats emerge that
we havent anticipatedAmong those are almost always better options than were contained in our
original plans. When you are pursuing a deliberate strategy, the challenge is to know when and how
to take advantage of unanticipated opportunities. These will fight with your deliberate plan for
attention, time and capital. Therefore, a career strategy, he says, is not a discrete, settled decision
or event, but a continuous, diverse, and unruly process.
He uses his own life as an example of balancing the emergent and the deliberate. He has had three
careers, first working as a consultant, then an entrepreneur, and finally as an academic. When he
was a college freshman, he decided he wanted to be editor of the Wall Street Journal, a newspaper
he deeply admired. He combined his good writing skills with the study of economics, hoping to put
himself in a position for a job there. At the end of his year at the Harvard Business School, he
10
applied for a summer position there and didnt get a reply. Crushed, thinking his deliberate plan had
gone awry for the time being, he received an offer for a consulting job. This was his emergent
strategy, and he worked for five years at this job. However, just as he was ready to step back and
start his real career as a journalist, a friend asked him to start a company with him. This company
went well, but a venture capitalist bought enough shares to put his own CEO in the top job and
Christensen was fired. He said, I didnt know it at the time, but this triggered stage three of my
emergent strategy.
At 37, Christensen went back to get his Ph.D and finally became a professor at the Harvard
Business School, a job he has loved for twenty years. On making a career strategy, Christensen
advises, What we can learn from how companies develop strategy is that although it is hard to get it
right at first, success doesnt rely on this. Instead, it hinges on continuing to experiment until you do
find an approach that works. Only a lucky few companies start off with the strategy that ultimate
leads to success. Thats true with people, too.

Finding Happiness in Your Relationships
The biggest bulk in the book is dedicated to finding happiness in your relationships. Christensen
says that while it is tempting to invest every extra hour and ounce of energy in an activity that gives
the most immediate evidence that weve achieved something, there is much more to life than career
flash and advancement.
He says, Investing our time and energy in raising wonderful children or deepening our love with our
spouse often doesnt return clear evidence of success for many years. What this leads to is over
investing in our careers and under investing in our familiesstarving one of the most important parts
of our life of the resources that it needs to flourish.
You have to make sure that you allocate your resources in a way that is consistent with your
priorities.Christensen says it is easy to stay at work, solving a problem that will give you a short-
term high, while ignoring family members who are just always there, but that is a life strategy that
leads to failure. He says, When it seems like everything at home is going well, you will be lulled into
believing that you can put your investments in these relationships on the back burner. That would be
an enormous mistake.

Take Time
Take time to figure out your lifes purposes. Decide who you want to become and then develop a
strategy that will work to get you there. Understand the metric by which your life will be measured.
Throughout the book, Christensen uses the theory behind what makes businesses succeed or fail
as the primary teaching tool, but in the end he gets personal.
He had cancer, and just when that was in remission, he suffered an ischemic stroke. A clot lodged
itself in the part of his brain where writing and speaking are formulated just as he started this book.
Since that day, Ive been working to learn to speak again, one word at a time, he said, but he had
strength in these bleakest of hours because he had figured out his purpose in life and how to
measure that.
He says, I promise my students that if they take the time to figure out their lifes purpose, theyll look
back on it as the most important thing they will ever have discovered. He makes the same promise
for the readers of his book, asking How will you measure your life?
Clayton Christensen is the Kim B. Clark Professor at Harvard Business School, the author of seven
books, a five-time recipient of the McKinsey Award for Harvard Business Reviews best article, and
the cofounder of four companies. In 2011 he was named the worlds most influential business
thinker in a biennial ranking conducted by Thinkers50.

TIPS ON INVESTMENTS IN SHARES-CXVI
The New Year began with a bang a far as markets were concerned. The trend shown,
according to market experts may take the indices to the record levels of 2007. The
sensex reached a two year high of 20039 on 18
th
Jan and Nifty 6064. The positive trend
was visible from first of Jan. The sensex began its upward journey from 19581 and
reached a high of 20104 on 25
th
. Likewise Nifty grew from 5951 to 6075 during the same
period. Only a few cues were available for the markets to go up. They were a three year
low inflation rate, investment by FIIs, and good third quarter results of major companies.
The postponement of GARR by three years, have made FIIs very happy and they are
investing heavily in our markets, which is the main reason for the present uptrend. The
economic policy review by the Reserve Bank on 29
th
as expected reduced the repo and
reverse repo rates by 25 basis points. Unexpectedly the RBI has reduced the CRR also
by 25basis points. This will make available an amount of Rs.18000 crores with the banks
for disbursement. However the markets have tanked unexpectedly on 29
th
. It may be that
the effect of this reduction might have already been taken into accounts by markets last
week itself. The reduction in interest rates will boost the economy and despite the
setback on 29
th
the markets will pick up in the coming days. The global cues are also
positive. Major indices like the Dow Jones and Nasdaq are moving up.
The medium term targets for sensex are 20430 and then 21230. Volatility may start
around the second target. As long as sensex remains above 18600 it will remain positive.
The short term trend in the index is sideways. The short term targets in the coming days
will be 20234 and 20451. The short term trend will turn negative on a close below 19596.
The medium term trend for Nifty is positive and the targets are 6225 and 6288. It will turn
negative only on a close below 5600.Short term supports for Nifty are at 6003,5970 and
then 5941.If the index is able to maintain a level above 6000 the next targets are at
6094,6163or even 6260. If the index close below 5940 it may turn negative.
Retail investors should take a cautious approach in dealing with the markets in the
present conditions. Most of the good shares are now at higher price levels and hence it is
not advisable to purchase shares snow. Now is the time to book profits. Normally one is
reluctant to book profits when the indices are moving up. But one cannot predict the
behavior of the markets. The unpredictable nature of the markets, make it prudent for
investors to book partial profits. One can make investments when there is good
correction. So please keep track of your investments and be prudent to take appropriate
action at right time.
