magine the following scene: you sit down in your school desk. The teacher walks the aisle, placing the paper before you, face down. You set your watch. You will have exactly one hour to do the test. You turn the paper over. Then it hits you: you never took any notes. You never studied or did even one assignment. For a student, lack of preparation is the nightmare of nightmares. Jesus talks about the need for preparation in todays Gospel. God is pleased to give us the kingdom, Jesus says. Gird your loins and light your lamps. See that you are prepared. Jesus teaching reminds us of the question once posed to St. Francis de Sales and his companions, who, according to the story, were playing billiards. What would you do if you knew the end of the world was coming in one hour? The friends of Francis shared various plottings of how they would get their affairs in order. Most mentioned prayer. Francis shrugged, I would continue doing what I am doing. Are you ready to meet the Lord?

Respect Life
Norma McCorvey was the Jane Roe of the Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in 1973. Now, she is pro-life, and works to overturn the decision she technically won. Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, confirmed Norma as she entered the Church in 1998. Norma says, I thought that I wanted to have an abortion with the baby that I was carrying, but I had no idea that it would lead up to such a controversial issue. I didn't know that there was two sides to the abortion issue. I didn't attend any of the court proceedings. In fact that's why I used the name Jane Roe because I didn't want my own personal name to be involved in it. Since August 8, 1995, I have been pro-life clear across the board. Abortion is totally wrong. I was the Jane Roe of Roe vs. Wade, but Jane Roe has been laid to rest.

From the Pastors Desk

At the end of school what do you want to do? - I want to do my Senior Certificate. After your Senior Certificate what do you want to do? - I want to go to college. After college what do you want to do? - I want to get a job. Then what do you want to do? - I want to make big money. What do you want to do after making money? - I want to build a big house. After that what do you intend to do? - I want to get married. What will you do after getting married? - I will have a family. What will you do after having a family? - I will retire. What do you want to do after you retire? - I want to take a rest. What will you do after taking a rest? - I dont know. Will you die? - Oh yes, I will die too. In that conversation the student answering those questions had to be reminded that he would die. We could say he was living for the present, with no thought about the present life disappearing. Many people would admit that they were so busy in the early part of their lives that they had not much time for God. But as time went by they began to realize more and more that life here is passing, that we are only passing through, and that the purpose of life is, as we learned in school, to know, love and serve God. That is why many people become more prayerful and spiritual as they grow older. They can see that life is short and goes by very quickly. One person said to me that when he passed the age of fifty he felt life was going by so quickly that there were two Christmases every year! We are familiar with the saying, Life begins at forty. Our spiritual life does not begin at forty since we were baptized as infants and we are sons and daughters of God since baptism. Let us not waste our lives by losing out on the most important of all, friendship with God. Let us not take half a lifetime to get dressed for action with our lamps lit. Radio stations are broadcasting but we must tune in our radio to pick up the signal. God communicates with us every day if we have the ears to hear. Sometimes God communicates with us in unexpected ways. Are you open to God speaking to you? Jesus said in the Gospel, You too must stand ready because the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect. God Bless! Fr. Rich

AN OPEN RESPONSE TO AN OPEN LETTER JULY 29. 2013 On Monday, July 29, in the Chicago Tribune, a group of Catholics published an open letter addressed to me and to the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD). They accused the Church of turning her back on the poor. This accusation follows a decision by the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR) to include support for same-sex marriage as part of their political agenda. The CCHD cannot fund groups that support this goal. Donors to the CCHD give to this anti-poverty organization with the understanding that their money will be passed on to organizations that respect the teachings of the Catholic faith. Organizations that apply for funds do so agreeing to this condition. On May 23, the ICIRR board broke faith with its member organizations when it publicly supported so called same-sex marriage. For its own political advantage, it introduced a matter extraneous to its own purpose and betrayed its own members, who were not consulted. The CCHD had no choice but to respect the unilateral decision of the ICIRR board that effectively cut off funding from groups that remain affiliated with ICIRR. Without betraying its donors or the Catholic faith, the Catholic Churchs long-standing work for immigrant groups and for immigration reform remains intact. This record speaks for itself and is well known. It is carried locally by Priests for Justice for Immigrants and by Sisters and Brothers of Immigrants, along with very many lay Catholics, in collaboration with the Archdiocesan Office for Immigrant Affairs and Immigration Education, led by Elena Segura with my complete support. It is intellectually and morally dishonest to use the witness of the Churchs concern for the poor as an excuse to attack the Churchs teaching on the nature of marriage. Four weeks ago, Pope Francis wrote: marriage should be a stable union of man and womanthis union is born of their love, as a sign and presence of Gods own love, and of the acknowledgement and acceptance of the goodness of sexual differentiation, whereby spouses can become one flesh and are enabled to give birth to a new life. In other words, when it comes to marriage and family life, men and women are not interchangeable. The whole civilized world knows that. Those who signed the open letter in the Tribune proclaimed their adherence to the Catholic faith even as they cynically called upon others to reject the Churchs bishops. The Church is no ones private club; she is the Body of Christ, who tells us he is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Because the signers of the letters are Catholic, they know that in a few years, like each of us, they will stand before this same Christ to give an account of their stewardship. Jesus is merciful, but he is not stupid; he knows the difference between right and wrong. Manipulating both immigrants and the Church for political advantage is wrong. Francis Cardinal George, OMI Archbishop of Chicago

August 11, 2013 Z biurka Ks. Proboszcza Dzisiejsze czytania mszalne ukazuj nam ludzi, yjcych sw wiar: Abraham wierzc Bogu zostawia swj kraj i idzie w nieznane; dziki swej wierze Sara staje si matk nowego narodu; Ewangelia przypomni, e czowiek wiary powinien mie pewien dystans do rzeczywistoci w ktrej yje, i winien nieustannie czuwa. Mona powiedzie, e ycie nasze jest jednym wielkim czekaniem. Czekamy na pocztek wakacji, na wita, na narodzenie dziecka, na dzie urodzin, na wyjcie ze szpitala... Czekanie wie si zasadniczo z nadziej. Czekamy bowiem spodziewajc si jakiego dobra. Nadzieja nie opuszcza nas nawet w trudnych sytuacjach naszego ycia. W dzisiejszej Ewangelii Jezus porwnuje ycie chrzecijanina do czuwania na swoje przyjcie: Niech bd przepasane biodra wasze i zapalone pochodnie. A wy podobni do ludzi, oczekujcych swego pana, kiedy z uczty weselnej powrci; aby mu zaraz otworzy, gdy nadejdzie i zakoacze. . Dzisiejszy fragment Ewangelii przypomina nam zarazem prawd, e kade czuwanie jest przechodnie znajduje swj kres. Ta chwila ostatecznej prby, to zamknicie ksigi doczesnego ycia, zadecyduje o losach naszej wiecznoci: Szczliwi owi sudzy - mwi Chrystus w Ewangelii - ktrych pan zastanie czuwajcych, gdy nadejdzie. Zaprawd powiadam wam: Przepasze si i kae im zasi do stou, a obchodzc bdzie im usugiwa. Trzeba nam tak y, jakby kada chwila decydowaa o wiecznoci. Nie chodzi tu oczywicie o przeywanie strachu, wynikajcego z nieoczekiwanego nadejcia Pana, bo to zakadaoby przeywanie bojani, wynikajcej z ycia w grzechu.
